canto review
What do you like best about the product?
the functions of the software and the look
What do you dislike about the product?
the software can be slow at times and there was a learning curve at first that was tough for our team
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
canto provides a place for our top photos the team can use and share with others
All your digital assets in one location easily accessible location
What do you like best about the product?
We have numerous employees in multiple locations that can easily access the needed image files seamlessly. It has great features for image indexing and storage and all images can be found in one central location. It works seamlessly with our other software and has helped in making our artwork easily accessible across all our software platforms.
What do you dislike about the product?
It was a little expensive for the initial outlay, however once we have seen the functionality, it is well worth it. It is the perfect solution for what we needed and in hindsight it would have been much more expensive had we decided to try and develop our own in-house version.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allowing all employees across multiple States and locations to easily access the image library on a daily basis. Easily share images cataloging hundreds of images and videos is very simple and easy to do. Quicker turn around times with getting digital images and videos to our partners and other vendors.
Good, but a bit slow.
What do you like best about the product?
I like the customization the best, and appreciate the ability to search with tags.
What do you dislike about the product?
Upload and download speeds are significantly slower than G Drive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have a large, varied library of assets, and we need a good way to house and search for items. The ability to categorize assets with multiple tags is GREAT!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This was the best bang for our buck when looking for an asset manager that could take us away from G Drive and deliver a categorized and tag-based asset management systems. One thing to consider would be the download and upload speeds, and ease of use.
Download and upload speeds have, from my perception, been significantly slower than what we used to use (G Drive). This doesn't seem like a big deal, until you're trying to upload gigs of raw video files, and the internet disconnects like it inevitably does and you have to start all over. Also, when you want to download a large file, instead of immediately starting a download (of a zip file) like Dropbox or G Drive, Canto first has to prep the file, and then send you an email with a link when the downloadable file is ready for download.
Regarding ease of use, the program is relatively easy to use, but the inability to drag and drop files from one folder to another is quite frustrating (especially when coming over from G Drive). Instead, you have to go into each file, and "add" them to the folder that you want them in. The file will then exist in both folders, which also isn't ideal.

Workflow Improved!
What do you like best about the product?
There are so many features that it can accommodate a variety of users. Where I use certain features, someone else on our team likes to use another.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a small learning curve but once you understand it becomes easy. The biggest con in my opinion is the layout of some of the features (settings, menus, etc.). There is room for improvement, especially to make things even more efficient for the user.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We had several issues with the server system, but mostly because sharing content was overly complicated. Now, with Canto, it's so easy. I often laugh at the technically barbaric method we used to use.
A great software for organizing digital assets
What do you like best about the product?
The search tool is great and has recently integrated smart tagging which I love.
What do you dislike about the product?
My only challenge currently is that our previews of the images are not clear as the original, so it's sometimes difficult to assess quality. I have yet to discuss it with the team and I'm sure they will offer a solution when I do.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Canto allows our team to contribute photo and video to our archive across multiple locations. As a designer, it is a convenient way for me to organize and curate the best of our images.
Dynamic DAM platform
What do you like best about the product?
Canto is very flexible and adaptable platform that has really streamlined our workflows and made our materials accessible to our statewide staff across three different offices. It's also made it a much simpler process to search and find good visual assets for various needs, and to share out photo and video documentation with back to artists we work with easily.
What do you dislike about the product?
The price is cost-prohibitive for smaller organizations, but the investment has been an important one for our organization in really taking good care of our cataloging and accessing our media assets. We do wish there was a function to batch-rename a group of files, tho.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Canto has been an important and daily tool for the professionalization of our workflows, and helped us develop meaningful care for our archival materials.
Canto for Marketing
What do you like best about the product?
First, it's beautiful and easy to use. We have a lot of designers on our team and Canto is the best looking platform, we reviewed. Also, since we are able to do more in Canto, we aren't wasting time find things in email or Slack.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are a few features I wish it had. Luckily the team at Canto listens to their client's requests and work hard to implement them. Every new release has included some feature we asked for!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's clear what assets we are referring to and we have a much cleaner file system. Team members aren't lost and are confident they are looking at the correct assets.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be patient with the migration, especially if you have a lot of data to transfer.
Put time into organizing folders, so you don't have to make adjustments after you go live.

Best DAM product on the market
What do you like best about the product?
It has many great features so it's hard to select just one but I work with a lot of photographers who contract with our company. Being able to provide them a link to upload their images directly into Canto is a time saver!
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish the download icon was larger and easier to find. This has been a problem from day one and it's still not being addressed. I often have to help our users figure out how to download. I also had to draft detailed instructions with screenshots on how to use Canto for our general users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to control which images the regular employee sees and downloads and which images we can restrict from general view and only allow select employees to see. Our metadata is better, the Smart Tags are helpful and easy to adjust if they're not hitting the mark just right, workspace feature is awesome for our review process. We're getting images in a consistent and efficient process (instead of every photographer having their own upload product), we're giving employees several options for downloading images (cropping, resizing, selecting RGB or CMYK, compressing), we can share images and "lightboxes" and the entire process is so much better than what we had before, which was an internally created application.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Request a sandbox be setup so your selection committee can fully test the product out. This option was a game changer for us. It gave us the ability to fully understand how the product worked and gave us the appropriate questions to ask when we needed help understanding how all the features worked. We had video sessions with our selection team and Canto reps who spent time answering our questions, demoing the product and screen sharing.
Simple digital asset management system
What do you like best about the product?
Love the ease of use and customization. We especially love the public portal feature, where we can create collections of pre-approved content for internal and external stakeholders.
What do you dislike about the product?
Wish there was an easier way to identify restricted assets when in thumbnail view. We have to pull high numbers of assets on a daily basis and sometimes you need to include a combination of approved and restricted assets.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Better photo management. We were using a computer filing system prior to moving to Canto. We are now able to search for assets with keywords and tags. We can also now access everything remotely!
Great organizational creative platform
What do you like best about the product?
Canto has been an amazing experience for us to refine our creative process and collaborate! We love all of the features.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing! The site is great to work with. We're happy with the new features being added, as well.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps our team collaborate! The organizational capacities, especially the tagging features, make searching for and finding the content we're looking for much easier. The amount of choice and flexibility we have with Canto is a great feature, as well.
