Faced hardware limitations and setup challenges but have improved network protection over time
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The features and capabilities of Fortinet FortiGate-VM that I have found most valuable are not only specific to Fortinet FortiGate-VM, but generally for most sites: a valuable web filter and DNS filter work together. For some sites, application filtering is important. The most important feature is IPS, which is the main reason for using Fortinet FortiGate firewalls. The current solution is only on the border of our network, between the company network and the internet.
What needs improvement?
I spent much time finding exact firmware on Aruba which was working with these guns, but it is not optimal because it is not the latest version, so there could be potential security problems. We decided to replace those access points with another one. I personally have trouble because I don't know the exact life cycle of Fortinet FortiGate-VM boxes. I don't know if the life of boxes is five years or something else; we moved from our previous company, which sold us to other companies.
Before 10 years, we had a special department that took care of core networks, including firewalls. After that, this responsibility fell to me and my colleague. It is not easy to set up these Fortinet FortiGate-VM boxes properly because we didn't have previous experience with this kind of solution. At first, we set up only a few rules that were not secure enough, and over a couple of years, we improved the settings and security of these Fortinet FortiGate-VM boxes.
Currently, I have one Fortinet FortiGate-VM that needs to be replaced next year, and this box is not so powerful, so I need to redirect some traffic to another Fortinet FortiGate-VM. It is stable, but because the CPU processor of this box is not powerful, I need to redirect some traffic to another box. In the future, I need to choose a higher-level box to prevent potential troubles with the power of this box.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for more than 10 years. We are currently running version 7.2.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Currently each company needs a firewall. All types of firewalls such as Fortinet FortiGate-VM, Cisco, and others have different capabilities, but regarding our financial situation, when we compare the price of Fortinet FortiGate-VM firewalls against other firewalls from other companies, we choose Fortinet FortiGate-VM because of price. Other firewalls have better capabilities, but we have a limited amount of money for that.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I expect that many threats are blocked by the IPS system because dynamic temporary rules are created. It works adequately, but I am not a security expert to compare this kind of firewall against another.
How are customer service and support?
The customer service experience has been rated 5 out of 5.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Ten years ago we started with Fortinet FortiGate-VM. I don't have experience with other firewalls.
How was the initial setup?
General settings are very easy and could work in about half an hour. But after the initial setup, it is necessary to create security rules according to the company's needs. I am glad that the default settings block all traffic, and only directly set up traffic is allowed.
What about the implementation team?
After 10 years, we had a special department that took care of core networks, including firewalls. After that, this responsibility fell to me and my colleague.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are only initial costs and after that yearly maintenance for the exact level of hardware support and hardware and security support. I am from Czech Republic, and I have experience that prices for our area are a little bit lower than in other areas for some goods. I don't have this experience with Fortinet FortiGate-VM because my colleagues in Germany are reaching better prices than me.
What other advice do I have?
In the past, we were using that technology, but we had a problem with some wireless guns and found a solution with Aruba Networks. We are using Microsoft 365 with some version E5 license. Regarding the network, we are mainly using Cisco systems. My colleague is working on the SIEM and SOC system with some external companies that support us after the ransomware attack. I am referring to hardware boxes and also virtual machines.
I expect that generally logs can improve our security because currently we don't have someone who works through these firewall logs, so we don't have information about potential security problems. We are expecting that it will be better after these logs will be connected to the SIEM system.
These firewalls are very easy to set up or manage. It is easy to set up each box individually, but currently, I don't have experience or training for central management of these Fortinet FortiGate-VM firewalls. I have been working as an IT specialist for about 30 years. I use it only for the backup of the firewall configuration. It is helpful because I have a backup of each firewall configuration every day, and I can return back several days. However, it is another difficulty because if the configuration of Fortinet FortiGate-VM changes, many other items will change. Generally, all passwords are regenerated, so it is not easy to find changes when comparing two configurations of one firewall. I can see this feature, but it is not so important because everything is working adequately. I start to focus on the logs only when I have problems or if I need to set up new applications or allow new traffic. I only look at how much percentage of connections are used, and if it is below some limits, it is acceptable. This solution has received a rating of 31 out of 100.
User-friendly, easy to set up, and works very well for SMB customers
What is our primary use case?
Being a cloud service provider with data centers using VMware technology, we primarily use it as a firewall and for Disaster Recovery in Hybrid Cloud Solution. We faced some issues with changes from NSX-V to NSX-T on VMware Cloud Foundation Infrastructure, which is no longer able to provide SSL VPN remote connections for end-users, so we replaced it with Fortinet FortiGate-VM for our customers as a new endpoint in the cloud, enabling us to create a VPN and utilize SSL VPN solutions. My customers mostly deploy Fortinet FortiGate-VM on the cloud.
What is most valuable?
We are using VM01 most of the time, as we have more customers, although sometimes we can use VM02. In the EMEA region, we mainly have customers related to Fortinet FortiGate-VM. My favorite capabilities are VM01 and VM02.
We use it in a hybrid cloud solution, meaning the customer on-premise is using another technology or the same. It's better for us if they are using Fortinet, and we don't face issues with this solution. For what we need to do, which is setting up a VPN connection between both sides and using it for SSL VPN connections for remote users, it works effectively and we haven't encountered vulnerabilities.
It's user-friendly and easy to set up. It's designed with the customer in mind. As someone who is precise, I understand the importance of selling the solution effectively while ensuring it meets the customer's needs. This means that my focus is on gathering customer feedback. It's not just about what I see; it's about understanding the customer's perspective. Customers often want to know how they can use the solution and how to set it up, which is the main concern I address.
Fortinet Security Fabric's Real-time Threat Response capabilities are satisfactory; it's a good solution.
What needs improvement?
There are vulnerabilities to address regarding security, as customers often ask about that. The main concerns are vulnerability detection and identification. Regarding the effectiveness of Fortinet FortiGate-VM in providing high-level security for high-level customers, we have some visibility issues, so it doesn't seem high level; there's definitely room for enhancement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate-VM for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We provide reliability; if one VM is up, the other can be down, so if there's a problem with the first, the backup can be activated. It's more about the design than the solution itself.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
For SMB customers, it is a very good solution; I am unsure about enterprise customers.
Flexibility and scalability are very important for our customers. They primarily use this solution for SSL VPN and VPN connections, and most of the time it's for disaster recovery as a service in our cloud, functioning as a hybrid solution where they use something in their on-premise environment and just need an endpoint in the cloud.
We provide managed services, handling the setup to create the necessary VPN connections for secure data transfer. If a customer wants to move from VM01 to VM02, it's not difficult for us to manage. Fortinet FortiGate-VM adapts effectively; for example, you have a limited number of VPN connections on VM01, accommodating around 1,000 remote users, and if the customer needs another endpoint, we can deploy VM02 and manage that transition effectively.
How are customer service and support?
Our support is good; we are the ones providing technical support to our customers. As a cloud service provider, our value is in offering solutions with our expertise, so we don't rely on Fortinet for support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We moved to this new solution at the end of 2024. I have three customers using Fortinet solutions and haven't faced any issues.
How was the initial setup?
It's user-friendly, and we can set it up easily with customers.
Most of our customers appreciate FortiManager, as the tools are interesting for easy setup of the product. Feedback regarding the interface is good; it's easy to understand, and the documentation from the Fortinet partner portal provides comprehensive information on product setup and management, which is beneficial for them.
What about the implementation team?
My customers mainly use a managed services solution, meaning they don't have a lot to do by themselves; our services provide the solution. If customers want to deploy it by themselves and are already Fortinet customers, we just provide resources on the cloud. They can directly set up what they want on the VM we provide in the cloud.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price is interesting for the customer; if you compare this solution with Competitors, it is maybe more suitable for SMB customers. The price is better than the competition.
What other advice do I have?
Improves network visibility and strengthens threat response with cloud-based projects
What is our primary use case?
Majorly, we have cloud migration solutions where we connect Fortinet FortiGate-VM with, usually for the FortiGate of the customer, an in-house solution. We have been through many different kinds of projects where we had to adapt the customer firewall solution.
A significant portion of our clients comes from the retail sector, particularly grocery stores. In the grocery market here in Brazil, there is generally low maturity in IT solutions and cybersecurity overall. MikroTik is commonly used for networking. Many of our clients utilize MikroTik or pfSense as their primary solution for their stores. Occasionally, they may also use Sophos or Fortinet at their headquarters. Through numerous projects, we have identified various vulnerabilities during penetration tests conducted in their environments. One of the primary concerns is usually the firewall, which prompts us to explore different security options. For example, we have a strong partnership with Trend Micro for Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR).
From there, we establish a connection between the customer's solutions and Fortinet. Sometimes, we implement SD-WAN to connect every store securely. This allows them to connect even with firewalls and SASE solutions, enabling connections via 5G to integrate the entire company with our cloud solutions. In summary, the foundation of our projects typically revolves around cloud migration, starting with security solutions or penetration tests that identify vulnerabilities. This leads us to implement both physical appliances and VM appliances as needed.
How has it helped my organization?
Our visibility into network traffic has improved since implementing Fortinet FortiGate-VM, at least based on the feedback from the operations team.
Fortinet adapts to evolving threats based on what I've seen. With AI implemented, they can analyze how new threats behave, enhancing their ability to respond. Nowadays, the prevalence of AI as a threat vector makes security harder; therefore, having a partner that's developing AI features for improved security is commendable.
What is most valuable?
My background is primarily in cloud infrastructure rather than security. When considering Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) or SASE solutions, I believe it effectively closes many gaps in a customer's connectivity and environment. For me, this level of security is crucial.
What needs improvement?
There are areas for improvement because usually, most policies don't change much. There's always room for enhancements, whether for VM or physical appliances, because threats evolve, necessitating adaptation and a different approach to the security environment.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have about two years of experience with Fortinet FortiGate-VM. We primarily used to work with open-source solutions. Three years ago, we established a strong partnership with Fortinet. Since then, we have been working with Fortinet FortiGate as our primary solution for firewalls. I am familiar with both Fortinet FortiGate-VM and FortiGate physical appliance.
How are customer service and support?
I can't rate technical support or customer service because I'm in the commercial area. From my perspective, I would rate it an eight out of ten. We are primarily supported by our own sales team, and recently we gained help from a Fortinet partner account manager, who has been assisting us with key customers and opportunities.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Our clients used different solutions. I believe that Fortinet has a larger installed base, which means they are exposed to more threats. This exposure helps them evolve more quickly and develop new solutions and protections against emerging threats. As a result, their response to issues is generally faster than that of their competitors. While I wouldn’t say they have more features than all the others, they do tend to introduce new solutions, policies, and tools more rapidly because of their extensive installed base. This allows them to be more responsive to new threats than other companies.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup used to be complex, but with the addition of features, potentially involving AI, it has become more straightforward. As far as I know, that was a challenge previously, but with recent releases, the setup process is increasingly automated.
We have a direct contract with Fortinet, but we primarily use the OCI environment. While we also partner with AWS, Azure, and GCP, about 90% of our infrastructure is in OCI. We are an ISV for Oracle. We offer a platform that enhances scalability for client-server solutions in the cloud. Over time, we have developed capabilities in integration, data management, and AI agent building. Our platform not only manages the infrastructure but also incorporates security tools like Fortinet and other solutions for phishing protection. In terms of integration, we provide an iPad solution along with a data warehouse and lake house construction process. This allows users to create their own data pipelines and ultimately deliver information to Business Intelligence (BI) tools or DataView tools. Additionally, users can build their own AI agents that operate entirely within their environment, using their own data without the need to export it to external tools. Oracle recognized us as an ISV capable of managing our customers' environments within our own accounts. Currently, we have more than 20,000 companies integrated into our operations within OCI.
What other advice do I have?
What's more important than just having good policies in place is to have a security operations center that monitors all the KPIs and thresholds. This allows us to use that feature wisely and take timely measures to position ourselves effectively. If all the policies are well-placed, we can even automate responses, locking parts of the network to prevent attacks based on vulnerabilities or threats detected within our policies.
I would rate Fortinet FortiGate-VM a nine out of ten. It's much better compared to the open source solutions we've used before. Not only is my average ticket a bit lesser due to the licensing and other factors, but I also experience fewer issues with my customers, at least when it comes to the Fortinet products.
Reliable content access through web filters boosts organizational needs
What is our primary use case?
Our use case for Fortinet FortiGate is that our organization's environment meets specific criteria, which is why we are using the FortiGate, not the other firewalls.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the web filters, as we are using them mostly; our content is condition-based, so we are accessing the websites by using the web filters. Fortinet FortiGate is a stable solution, as we are using it in our organization for proxies.
What needs improvement?
I believe that Fortinet FortiGate can be improved, especially in support response times. If you have a critical scenario in your organization, when you email them and call, they ask you to log the ticket first, which takes time.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have approximately six years of experience working with Fortinet FortiGate.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's a good solution, and we are using it for almost six years without experiencing any bad scenarios. However, there is an issue with Fortinet support, as we are using the premium support but have not received good results, since they take a long time to resolve queries after we submit them.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiGate is a scalable solution.
How are customer service and support?
My concern is primarily about the support. The product is good, but my overall concern is about the support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before Fortinet FortiGate, I haven't used any other solutions; it was the first one, and I am using it until now.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Fortinet FortiGate was very easy for me.
What about the implementation team?
We have just deployed Fortinet FortiGate in our organization by ourselves, without help from the support or any other vendors.
What was our ROI?
I just work on Fortinet FortiGate, but I have heard in the market that Fortinet FortiGate is better than others in terms of cost and overall solution. My total experience is only with Fortinet FortiGate, so I am very comfortable with this product.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
In my opinion, the price of Fortinet FortiGate is good, as it is a good solution with a good price.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
In comparison to other firewalls, it is a good solution with a good price.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Fortinet FortiGate overall as nine out of ten, as it has made different products for different needs. You cannot get all the solutions in one box, but for dedicated requirements, you need dedicated hardware for other functions. I would rate technical support from Fortinet at a three on a scale of one to ten.
Has implemented secure remote access and enhanced centralized management for client data centers
What is our primary use case?
We are a service provider. We have the client project, so we are recommending Fortinet FortiGate for this solution. We are not just recommending; we are billing also. It's basically SD-WAN, a software-defined WAN network. On our client side, we are setting up a mini data center, and in that, we are using Fortinet FortiGate.
What is most valuable?
The best features in Fortinet FortiGate are the VPNs for the outside network and IPsec tunnels between the point-to-point links between their head office and branch offices. Software VPNs provide remote access features and remote access services. Fortinet Unified settings are good for our cloud-based management and centralized management. I think it is a better option for that.
What needs improvement?
We have not yet tried the Unified Agent. We would need more details to explore how it can be used for our business use cases.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Fortinet FortiGate for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is stable. As of now, there are no performance issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have many scalable customers that have scaled in different areas. If we can get proactive support before the issues are identified by the customer itself, we can resolve it easily. We can do some proactive maintenance for that purpose.
How are customer service and support?
We are using AI and ML-enhanced FortiGuard services within Fortinet FortiGate. We do use Fortinet FortiGate's data center solution.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
What other advice do I have?
We have Firewalls in our internal network. We have software Firewalls and Fortinet FortiGate Firewalls, which are hardware. We use Sophos and Fortinet FortiGate. We have two Firewalls mainly, for internal and outside networks. The Sophos Firewall is for external networks and Fortinet FortiGate Firewall is for internal networks.
We haven't done the full SD-WAN integration as of now. We have our own software-defined network that is cloud-based. Our customer is preferring the hardware-based solution, so Fortinet FortiGate is under consideration. Currently, we are not using Fortinet FortiGate SD-WAN, but we have a plan for that.
The Fortinet FortiGate solution is affordable and not complex. It can be manageable on private cloud. Most of our customers are government companies, so we are preferring the private cloud. Scalability is very important for us, though it's only scalable on our server.
I have been using Sophos myself from the management side, and our team has hands-on experience with multiple vendors. The only concern is support-related. We have not tried AI and ML integration with Fortinet FortiGate, but we can consider it and will refer it to our clients.
On a scale of 1-10, I rate Fortinet FortiGate a 10.
Hybrid cloud flexibility and improved center protection enhance network management
What is our primary use case?
We're working with Fortinet FortiGate firewalls, network devices, and Wi-Fi, specifically for Wi-Fi and networking.
What is most valuable?
The best features of Fortinet FortiGate include the flexibility of hybrid cloud capabilities and the way they are structuring their multi-tenancy and for managed services, along with manageability. The services have improved data center protection at scale because we have standardized, and it's all more manageable.
What needs improvement?
Technical support would probably be an area for improvement, particularly around the extensibility of hybrid multi-cloud integration with AI. I have faced some issues with technical support, particularly with the speed of response not being so quick at times. We also want to improve the partnership program, as it is not flexible enough for global companies. The partner program's level of certification and commercial commitment is not really well-suited for global partners.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Fortinet FortiGate for many years now.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate their technical support as a six.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
How was the initial setup?
The implementation and initial setup of Fortinet FortiGate depends on various factors and is not straightforward. The person who implements it needs to know what they are doing and should be certified on how to implement it. However, if you know what you're doing, it's more straightforward than most other products.
What about the implementation team?
Fortinet provides training as part of our partner program.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment, more or less.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing is good; we're sorting out our global partnerships. Before I joined the company, we had a pricing problem because the partnership was not set up correctly, but now I've managed to get that sorted out and hopefully, that will resolve the issue and lead to better pricing globally.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
For a firewall perspective, your next option would probably be Palo Alto or Check Point, but Fortinet has made significant improvements to go ahead in that space. I think your closest contender right now is probably Palo Alto.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Fortinet FortiGate to most organizations. I would rate Fortinet FortiGate overall as an eight.
Creates seamless connectivity and boosts security efficiency
What is our primary use case?
My main use case for Fortinet FortiGate includes deploying all Fortinet solutions, from zero to a complete deployment for infrastructure security. This includes securing the internal network infrastructure, securing the edge network for perimeter protection, and interconnecting sites through site-to-site VPN, multi-site, remote access, and SSL VPN.
Additionally, it includes the protection of DMZ servers through the most advanced UTM security profiles of Fortinet.
The use of Fortinet FortiGate helps me with site-to-site VPN and remote access. The use of Fortinet products occurs in real, professional deployment projects for the clients I work with. The specifications are based on the deployment of SD-WAN, site-to-site VPN, multi-site, hub and spoke, SSL VPN, and many other subjects for securing the infrastructure, whether it involves remote sites with small appliances or a head office site with data center or campus appliances.
For interconnecting remote sites, whether through site-to-site VPN or multi-site, the process is simple. It depends on the context and the client's specifications. For a client who has a site to interconnect, it will be a simple site-to-site deployment with IPsec VPN to allow interconnection of different sites. For a client who has several sites, I propose and deploy a hub and spoke setup with ADVPN for scalable interconnection of multiple sites.
What is most valuable?
The standout features of Fortinet FortiGate include its ease of use, intuitive interface for implementation, and simplified maintenance, administration, and daily management from deployment to monitoring. The accessible support and documentation that Fortinet makes available to all users is essential.
One of the advantages of using Fortinet is that it uses an identical FortiOS system for all Fortinet products. They all have an intuitive interface that is easy to use and learn, even for novices. They can easily integrate and adapt to use Fortinet in different use cases. In my experience with products from other providers such as Palo Alto, Cisco, and Check Point, Fortinet is the only provider to have successfully set up a unified operating system on all its products in the network security ecosystem.
Through a Fortinet FortiGate, you have the ability to manage the entire ecosystem of your network through a simple management system. The Security Fabric of FortiGate allows you to simplify management and threat response from all security equipment that can collaborate and be used together. Additionally, FortiManager accompanies this solution to unify the centralized management of all Fortinet products, using the same FortiOS system.
The use of Fortinet FortiGate in an infrastructure saves time, reduces costs, improves the security of users and resources, and prevents data leakage. When deployed properly to secure the infrastructure, there is increased productivity, improved user performance, and reduction in bandwidth consumption.
What needs improvement?
I think Fortinet FortiGate can be improved as Fortinet must address significant points of evolution. When I mention points of evolution at Fortinet, I mean they must implement simplified processes for deployment scenarios and enhance their ability to support customers, despite existing documentation and support access.
For how long have I used the solution?
I started using Fortinet FortiGate over six years ago. In the last three years, the use of FortiGate and many other Fortinet products has become intense and regular.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
In my experience, Fortinet FortiGate is not stable at all.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiGate's scalability is good.
How are customer service and support?
Most of the clients I support technically with their Fortinet products appreciate the service. They don't have any problems, so there is no significant negative feedback.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before using Fortinet FortiGate, I used Cisco ASA. We switched to Fortinet because they provided much more concrete solutions, were more up-to-date, and focused on network security as their core business.
How was the initial setup?
On the cloud side, purchasing Fortinet FortiGate through the AWS Marketplace is very simple to deploy and easy to set up. My experience with the configuration process in AWS has been globally simple.
What was our ROI?
I have not seen a return on investment since using Fortinet FortiGate.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for Fortinet FortiGate is that the licensing and hardware pricing is reasonable compared to other security solution providers. However, Fortinet must review the access to these licenses at reduced prices, and the appliance prices must be reviewed to allow access to all organizations, including small, medium, and large-sized businesses.
What other advice do I have?
I would add that all of Fortinet's UTM protection solutions are solutions that respond to the current ecosystem for the protection of critical infrastructures. My advice to others looking into using Fortinet FortiGate would be that while recommendations are great, they should ask more questions. I rate Fortinet FortiGate an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Web filtering and application categories provide robust security while traffic remains stable with excellent support
What is our primary use case?
Our use cases include link aggregation with core switches and WAN switches solutions when having multiple ISPs to reduce the number of utilization ports in the Fortinet FortiGate firewall. We can provide link aggregation bandwidth and throughput of 1GB and create LACP for their traffic. The solution includes LACP link aggregation solutions, LDAP integrations, and read-write profiles for L1 and L2 access integrations. It also includes dial-up VPN, hub-and-spoke setup, IPsec tunnels setups, and automation features where administrators receive notifications for any changes in the firewall. Currently, in India, approximately 30 to 40% of organizations utilize these devices.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate include web filtering and application category functionality. The application category allows web filtering based on categories, which is one of the strengths of the Fortinet FortiGate firewall. The traffic is stable and seamless. We have found minimal bugs in the firmware, and when issues are discovered, they are immediately rectified with TAC engineers.
Fortinet FortiGate can be deployed in both large and small organizations. The solution can be implemented in organizations with 150, 60, or 100 users. We can provide solutions based on their throughput requirements, which is a significant advantage of the firewall.
What needs improvement?
I require many more features as of now.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with Fortinet FortiGate for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The traffic is stable and seamless. We have found minimal bugs in the firmware, and when issues are discovered, they are immediately rectified with TAC engineers.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I have not gone in-depth regarding scalability, but from economic, financial, and security level perspectives, everything is manageable and better understood. We also receive support from the TAC team.
How are customer service and support?
Support services are excellent, deserving a rating of 8.5 to 9. Technical support provides better clarity about issues. Only two or three cases rarely remained unresolved by TAC engineers.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
When comparing with other OEM levels, we can provide better solutions.
How was the initial setup?
The complexity level is not significant.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
When using another OEM firewall, we can provide alternative solutions.
What other advice do I have?
The solution is very easy to understand and handy. We have customers deployed both on-premises and in the cloud. Our main focus is on monitoring bandwidth utilization and identifying which applications are used most frequently and which IPs are affected. We have separate monitoring tools to identify malware or malicious content downloads, providing additional benefits.
For data center solutions, we provide solutions based on throughput, number of users, and traffic routing from hubs to DC. The application utilization tracking allows us to see bandwidth usage per IP and MAC address, helping allocate traffic shaping for particular departments.
I would rate it a nine out of 10
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Comprehensive network management and seamless integration enhance operational efficiency
What is our primary use case?
We are a reseller of Fortinet FortiGate, so we have several use cases. We use Fortinet FortiGate to protect banking companies, and we use it to protect edge cloud data centers and so on.
How has it helped my organization?
Fortinet FortiGate has positively impacted our organization by allowing us to scale fast.
What is most valuable?
One of the best features of Fortinet FortiGate is SD-WAN. It works very well with BGP, and AD-VPN is also great. The routing features from Fortinet FortiGate are exceptional. For the security features, their WAFs are extremely limited, however, everything else is great.
They are very affordable compared to Palo Alto and other vendors, offering a great solution for networking and SD-WAN with extremely good protection.
They have great features, and I can integrate with EMS for ZTNA and numerous other functionalities.
The networking aspects of Fortinet FortiGate, such as FortiSwitches and FortiAPs, and how they act integrated are impressive. From the firewall, I can manage the whole network, which makes operations much easier.
What needs improvement?
I have several concerns about Fortinet, however, regarding Fortinet FortiGate itself, they could improve their support system. It's hard to get a good engineer to help you.
Additionally, they lack a post-sale process; once the sale happens, they just vanish, and then you're on your own. That is my main problem.
The WAF is extremely limited. You can't create exceptions, for example. You can only enable or disable. You can create exceptions, however, they must be applied globally.
I am doing my first implementation with SASE. With Google, it lacks a lot of app integration and a lot of features that the other competitors have.
For how long have I used the solution?
I started to work with Fortinet FortiGate more than 15 years ago.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiGate's stability has changed over time. They used to be very stable. In the past couple of years, they started releasing numerous new features, and things have become somewhat unstable.
From one version of Fortinet FortiGate to another, sites have stopped blocking, and I experience some minor problems that have become usual in the past couple of years. They are working very hard to fix these issues.
Currently, I would rate the stability of Fortinet FortiGate at about seven or eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiGate has excellent scalability; I would rate scalability a perfect ten.
How are customer service and support?
It is extremely hard to get a good engineer from Fortinet to help with day-to-day operations and problems.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Fortinet FortiGate is straightforward. There's extensive documentation available on the internet, and they have great support on that subject.
Their administration guide is excellent, and their training program is also great and free. You can configure a Fortinet FortiGate in approximately two hours if you understand your network requirements.
What was our ROI?
In Brazil, the ROI situation is complicated because everything is very expensive. However, we haven't used MPLS for over five years now, and it was extremely beneficial to see the changes from MPLS to SD-WAN using Fortinet FortiGate. Our ROI was extremely high at that time.
Currently, our ROI is more focused on day-to-day operations, and it's excellent. I don't have the exact number, however, it's highly favorable.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise people considering using Fortinet FortiGate to buy it and trust the company; it's a great product. You need to be a little patient with Fortinet itself. However, the product is great.
I would rate Fortinet FortiGate overall at about a nine out of ten. That said, they lack good support.
Integrates seamlessly and helps with real-time threat response
What is our primary use case?
The protection of assets in the cloud was our customers' main use case for the Fortinet FortiGate-VM firewall. They wanted to have an easy IPsec or secure IPsec VPN.
How has it helped my organization?
Since the solution we offered was a complete suite with Fortinet FortiGate-VM, it was easier for them to manage because they have FortiManager as well. The main reason they wanted to position FortiGate in the cloud was so that they could easily deploy through FortiManager. That was the selling point we had for them. Especially for their multiple branches, where they had approximately 60 sites, and some assets were in AWS, it was really a good deployment opportunity. FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer were also part of that solution.
What is most valuable?
Fortinet Security Fabric and real-time threat response capabilities are the main selling points. If you use their Fabric, it is easier to set up and patch things, especially on solutions, making it brand-centric. It is easier to manage, get the reports needed, and implement.
What needs improvement?
In the Philippine market, where cybersecurity is still growing but not yet fully mature, we have many clients who have Fortinet FortiGate-VM or hardware. However, we cannot really position the Fabric if the licenses, renewal parts, or other components have monetary requirements that hinder full utilization.
For how long have I used the solution?
The solution we proposed to our client was implemented a year ago, and they are still using it.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We have not experienced any issues so far because we use stable firmware and updates.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's scalable enough.
How are customer service and support?
It was easy to contact Fortinet support because we have support in the Philippines. There could be improvement with more Filipino representatives for easier discussion and better language comprehension.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is relatively pricey, but it usually depends on the use case or environment. For large enterprises, price is not a problem because they need that solution. However, in the Philippine market, many of our clients are still small to medium businesses, so the price can be challenging. The license for Fortinet FortiGate-VM costs 100K to 150K Philippine pesos per year for VM1 or VM2.
As integrators, the price has been challenging, especially for renewals.
What other advice do I have?
We also provide FortiGate-VM, FortiAnalyzer, and FortiManager to our clients.
Fortinet FortiGate-VM is one of the easiest and most user-friendly brands we use, with excellent threat intelligence and accessibility. If you have multiple Fortinet FortiGates, you get easy access and better visibility with FortiManager or FortiAnalyzer. They have been improving with each version.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
