Amazing tool for Research

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Dovetail is an easy-to-use tool for qualitative research. It has reduced our time in the analysis process: transcription, content tagging and insight identification, with the help of its AI functions.

In addition, it facilitates the management of large volumes of information, allowing us to find interviews or fragments more quickly.
What do you dislike about the product?
It has been a bit difficult for us to adapt to the many changes they have made recently.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dovetail helps us in the process of identifying the pain points and needs of our users through its tools for qualitative content analysis.

A great tool for a research team of 1

What do you like best about the product?
Things I love about Dovetail are having Zoom integrated so I can easily upload and transcribe my user interviews. The great quality auto generated summaries, which are handy for skim reading. Having a shared place for the source data, the tagging phase, the analysis phase (eg thematic analysis of tagged highlights in a canvas view) and having a way of building a summary & recommendations page via the insights functionality where you can include video snippets to loop back to the source.
I also appreciate being able to share links to the project summary aswell as links to specific quotes to try and help keep insights surfaced within the team via Slack.
What do you dislike about the product?
Despite the auto summary being pretty reliable, in general I've not found the AI suite of tools to be comprehensive enough to fully trust yet and still prefer to manually tag. I also find that as the product does so much, it can be confusing to navigate it all and even more so for collegeues who don't use it much but you want to engage with it more.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dovetail helps me analyse research and share insight reports with my collegues

Lost without this product

What do you like best about the product?
This product has been crucial to the growth of our research team. This is our research repository and affinity mapping tool. We are very excited about the new capabilities that will facilitate self service and more efficient leveraging of past research with magic search. Overall this product is intuitive and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
We had a performance issue at a certain point when they rolled out a new canvas for affinity mapping. It majorly slowed us down, but it appears to be fixed now. Our CSM was very helpful when this occurred.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have a small research team but a lot of work to do. Dovetail makes us more efficient, organized, and professional.

It used to be my favorite tool, but now it's a pain to use

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We aim to break research into bite-sized insights and Dovetail used to be a tool that allowed our team to manage our insights effectively. However, it removed features and replaced them with AI tools that are inadequate and misleading, while also making the interface increasingly confusing.
What do you dislike about the product?
We built a large research database in Dovetail over three years, which included numerous interviews, highlights, insights, and global tags. A few months ago, Dovetail removed the features that helped us navigate this extensive database, stating that they are now only available in the ten times more expensive enterprise plan (10x just to be able to use it as we did before).

Their customer support seemed indifferent to our disappointment, responding with something like, "We have AI features that can replace your old workflows." However, these new features are poor, and as a result, we now have to spend significantly more time in Dovetail.

Additionally, the transcription feature hasn't been updated in years, and other tools provide more accurate and cleaner transcriptions. Essentially, Dovetail keeps adding new features that aren't as good while removing or halting the development of the features that made it useful for us.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It used to manage and navigate our large database of insights and user research effectively, and transcribing many calls to text. However, it now handles these tasks less efficiently, as many crucial features have been removed and replaced with inadequate AI tools, while better transcription tools continue to improve, while Dovetail's remains stagnant

best tool in a researcher's toolbox

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that with dovetail we have consolidated all of our research projects including the recorsings, analysis and reports into a single platform.
Also for international companies, the transcriptions in multiple languages and using AI for analysis in a valuable time saving feature.
I also love the AI's help with directly extracting the answers to the initial research questions from the transcripts which streamlines the analysis process.
What do you dislike about the product?
I've witnessed that navigating through Dovetail (notes, insights, highlights, etc) is a bit challenging for non researchers. As a researcher, I appreciate the flexiblity but it might not work for other roles. and also it can lead to inconsistent documentation styles across different research projects conducted by different researchers, making it yet more dificult for others to navigate.
on the other hand, I also find dovetail not an ideal tool for managing analysing survey data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It solves for documenting, analysing and reporting findings in a smooth way.

Dovetail: A Strong Research Tool with Room to Grow

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use, and strong repository synchronization between projects. Amazing capability for future atomic research.
What do you dislike about the product?
Many things are still in development, like moving component inside groups, or reorganizing files, and transcriptions are not always correct. The usability of the tool is lacking a bit. And lasty the compatibility with other research and design tools is lacking, like Maze.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I wouldnt say dovetail safes time, it requires more work and effort to document some methodologies, but it will safe a lot more time to other parties interested in my findings. I see it more as a team time saving tool, which is the benefit of working towards atomic research. It does help me better link insights and build a report with more ease, and transcripts do indeed help as well.

Dovetail brought Research Ops to the next level

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Dovetail has been an amazing platform that brings all your research ops into one hub. Especially useful for structuring quantitative studies and writing down insights and reports. When it comes to scale, it handles and organizes all the data very easily and makes it easy to find an consume from other stakeholders.

Also, I love their transcribe functionalities. They even work in my native language. And if you add to that the AI capabilities and summaries, Really easy to analyze research artifacts.
What do you dislike about the product?
It may be hard to start from scratch initially if you don't have previous experience with the tool. IA may be confusing and complex for small use cases and when you're just starting. For example, brining your first research study in Dovetail.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Structuring research operations.

Game changer in our productivity and team performance

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Dovetail was extremely easy to implement and very straight-forward. We could start using it from the very first moment. The team just spent some hours watching some tutorials and we agreed on some standarisation. This is something that we continuously review.

As researcher in the user research team, I'm using Dovetail at the very least on a weekly basis.

With Dovetail I am much more efficient doing my tasks and more effective with my responsabilities:

Research analysis.
I can analyse single research sessions very effectively thanks to the quick transcription and all tagging features.
The quality of my analysis has increased since I can easily find, visualise and identify relevant highlights to draw my conclusions, create insights or share specific moments with stakeholders.
The different hightlights views (board, table, canvas...) are super useful. Particularly the canvas and the automatic hightlight grouping. This saves me lots of time in projects where I have to work with a lot of data as I can start doing my analysis with a baseline and I can do affinity mapping in a very visual way.

Documentation
In the team we were looking for a tool where all research could be easily documented and work as research repository. We have achieved that thanks to the insights features and notes/ insights fields. Now we can easily find past calls and research findings. All research projects are in one place and all it's content is available.

Search
Not only the researchers are searching for content but now that we've been using it for more than a year and we have enouch content, we see that other product people (designers, product managers, data insights, programe managers...) are using the tool to look for insights. The powerful search allows to search for anything.

Sharing research findings
Dovetail is also serving another key responsability of the user research team. We can now do more appealing research reports and create atomic insights. They are not only well documented and findable but it's easy for us to share specific learnings or session moments in Slack, presentations, meetings, etc.

It has helped to give visibility to the rest of the organisation what the user research team does and how it can contribute and is awakening the interest of other teams into looking for research insights.

In summary, it has increased our productivity and is supporting us in key aspects to grow our team maturity and impact.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing that I dislike but there are some things I wished they were improved:
- Transcription is still not good in many cases with non native-speakers. In some cases, we still have to spend a lot of time ammending transcriptions. Hopefully the transcription models will keep improving over time. If that would improve, it would have a big impact in our productiviy.
- Note and insight editing and format options could be better. There are no indexes and some formating options are a bit limited.
- More capabilities to manage the fields. single-select or multi-select fields can grow organically and get difficult to manage or become unuseful. It'd be great if we could somehow control or manage them, similar to tags.
- Content search is still challenging to stakeholders. Although I see there are some improvements coming thanks to AI
- Integration with product board. I wish we could have the ability to fill in some product board insight fields, right now we can only edit the tags.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Research analsysis, research documentation, sharing research findings with stakeholders.
Allows stakeholders to find data from research projects.

What do you like best about the product?
In Dovetail, I really appreciate the tags for videos, which help with quickly analyzing the videos. Adding AI was a game changer, and now I can work even more efficiently. The best thing is that once you tag your videos, you can build an entire user case with multiple videos.
What do you dislike about the product?
I the navigation can be better but I see some improvements already
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
help me analyse all user interviews research and share it with whole company. Generate AI summary from meeting is also live saver.
