Great wiki software

  • October 29, 2018

What do you like best about the product?
Confluence is an amazing piece of software. Have you ever created tables in MediaWiki (or something similar)? Forget about Markdown and switch to Confluence. Confluence has a nice visual editor that is packed full of features.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that Confluence is a RAM eater and I dislike the cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We switched from having eight MediaWiki instances to having one Confluence instance. Not only has this simplified our infrastructure but we no longer have to manage the plugins/users/etc. on a wiki-by-wiki basis.

Agile collaboration tool that integrates a lot of functionalities.

What do you like best about the product?
I like how easy it is to create content. It has a "wikipedia" kind of format and approach but brings a lot more ease for the content publisher.
I especially like the draw.io diagrams which are a decent alternative to Visio.
What do you dislike about the product?
I feel like search results could be displayed in a better way. It can sometimes be difficult to quickly get the page that you are looking for.
Not always clear what changes are made to a given page when we get a change notification.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We used this tool in a project where the specifications were changing really often. We've found that it allowed us a great agility plus we could be informed when modifications where made to pages we were following. Also, using a collaboration tool in this context allowed us to ensure we always had the latest version of the information.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Nice tool to use within a project but do make sure that you "promote" the end documentation to proper format (such as word or pdf). In our case, we kept everything in Confluence and because of that, it is sometime hard to tell what is final and what isn't.

Pretty good flexibility, but hard to find things buried in sections

What do you like best about the product?
Can be shared across the org, different groups/roles can see different sections.
What do you dislike about the product?
Hard to search compared to other solutions imo.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Internal process documentation, team notifications.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is a good solution, just feel there are other more searchable and user friendly solutions for our use.

    Telecommunications

Old-School Interface, lacking extreme functionality

What do you like best about the product?
Confluence is easy to access and input information. Organizationally, it is simple to setup. It's ability to import from places like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel is extremely beneficial. Sharing within Confluence and ability to incorporate media such as videos has been an extreme help for our organization. Spaces are incredibly important and with Confluence, these are easily separated out.
What do you dislike about the product?
The platform itself just feels far too old, similar to as if you were working in Windows 95. From every instance of Confluence I have seen, it appears extremely basic and not visually appealing. Simple tasks such as moving pages or editing information are often dependent upon user roles, which seems like a layer that could be changed without having permissions/roles. The linking/commenting seems geared more towards social media and feels very out of place for these. Not to mention, I have yet to see any tracking on commentary or updates. Finally, the home page with the different spaces and feeds on the right (Popular, All Updates, Favourite Space, etc.) seem very scattered and also unappealing from a visual standpoint.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Training and Documentation have been extremely useful with Confluence. For instance, Confluence serves as the number one location for all videos and documentation for new hires, which can be accessed by anyone, at anytime. This central location is never changed, and Confluence has served as a dependable site for this. Additionally, documentation has been an ongoing project and thanks to Confluence, we're able to continuously create new pages, Parent and Child pages, and store information very easily from Microsoft Office products. It's great to see things like tables and formatting paste over perfectly, and makes Confluence a lot easier to use when you can do this as opposed to manually entering this information. Spaces have been simple to organize, and permissions for teams have been important and widely used.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Focus on making this organized because the initial setup and flow are not; it is very default and basic. Work to utilize spaces!

Not a fan

What do you like best about the product?
I like that I can see the other teams work and we can all compile documentation in order to help each other out. It is pretty easy to use and make edits. We also have the ability to have a calendar on one of our pages and that allows everyone on the team to be able to see PTO, Travel, who is on call, etc. That is a really nice feature. It is also nice that everyone can edit and add comments on each of the pages.
What do you dislike about the product?
Our teams is very disorganized and it is a little confusing trying to figure out how to organize it. We have played around with a few different options and it is really hard to get it right. It is hard to find things we need quickly. I really don't like the search feature. You have to be really specific on what you are searching for or it brings back documents from the entire company that has the key word your searching for. It's not a good tool in that sense when you just want something from your team.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Confluence for a variety of different issues. It is a big source of communication between teams. We post documents that show step by step how to solve issues and how to communicate to other teams when there is a big issue. It also helps us to spread knowledge amongst the larger team. Those are the major benefits as well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Its a good system but just see if there are any help documents when starting with the program.

What do you dislike about the product?
It takes a little bit of effort to learn how to use it.

Collaborative documentation, this is a very nice tool for that.

What do you dislike about the product?
Ability to disable notifications from others is hard to find. Works well with JIRA but not AZURE DEVOPS/VSTS
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A centralized location for documentation. Ease of access, collaboration and linking
