Reliable Data Integration with Fivetran

  • October 15, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Our team saved a lot of time using Fivetran. We were able accelerate adoption because of its user-friendly interface and step by step guidelines to set up connectors. We were able to connect 30+ data sources and not have to worry about schema drifts and other data engineering tasks. Also, we used Fivetran’s sdk to build custom connectors for complex integration. Customer support helped us a lot when we encountered issues. They would reply within 12 hours and offer detail feedback which helped us resolve issues quickly.
What do you dislike about the product?
The main concern we have with Fivetran is the pricing model. It can increase rapidly as they volume of the data increases and also the compute costs will increase when the sync frequency increases. Fivetran gives a 2-week free trial to estimate costs before you turn on the connector, but it is hard to get an additional budget mid fiscal year. Also, you will need to use Fivetran with another tool like dbt to handle complex transformations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fivetran solved the challenge of replicating data from various sources to our Snowflake Data Warehouse. Before using Fivetran my team would have to spend a lot of time maintaining custom data ingestions or using other ETL tools that were not optimized for data ingestion.

Great Managed Solution with Room for Improvement

  • October 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Fivetran's ease of use is definitely its standout feature. The platform is simple to navigate and doesn't require much manual intervention, which is great for streamlining data workflows. I also love the variety of connectors available—most of the tools I need are supported, and it's clear that Fivetran is continuously expanding its offerings. The managed aspect of the service means I don't have to worry about maintenance, and that’s a huge plus for saving time and resources.
What do you dislike about the product?
The pricing can be a bit of a pain point, especially as data usage scales up. While the managed service is convenient, the cost feels like it could be more aligned with varying business sizes or budgets. Additionally, some connectors are missing certain features or options that would be helpful, and having more customization or advanced controls would improve the overall experience.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fivetran solves the challenge of maintaining reliable, automated data pipelines without requiring constant monitoring or manual intervention. By managing the entire ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process, it allows my team to focus on data analysis rather than spending time on data integration. It streamlines data flow from multiple sources into our data warehouse, ensuring that we always have up-to-date data for reporting and decision-making. This has significantly reduced the time and effort spent on managing integrations and troubleshooting, ultimately improving our operational efficiency.

Seamless connector setup with good data readiness and room for filtering improvements

  • October 11, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We have implemented Fivetran at client sites to connect to various platforms like Dynamics 365 and SharePoint. My objective was to determine which solution was better for handling geospatial data.

How has it helped my organization?

It has been beneficial in quickly getting data ready for AI or machine learning projects due to its easy connectors, which expedite data availability.

What is most valuable?

The ease of setting up the connectors and transformations is highly valuable. We used the SaaS version of Fivetran to connect to Dynamics 365, and it was great and easy, although we couldn't filter data on it.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see an improvement in the support offered by Fivetran. Their support is very limited, and even when they respond, they often can't help. The ability to handle geospatial data types would also be beneficial, as well as the ability to filter data in the connectors.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for about a year across different sites and for various purposes, using different connectors.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Fivetran's automatic schema migrations have been perfect, without any issues.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is limited. When you do get a hold of someone, they often cannot provide much assistance.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for small corporations, particularly when using connectors such as those for SharePoint, is not affordable. For large corporations doing change data capture, it is very affordable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

For geospatial data, I would recommend using other solutions like FME. A simple Azure Data Factory setup can handle filtering, which some connectors don’t facilitate.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Fivetran based on specific use cases. Its ease of use and minimal setup requirements make it one of the easiest solutions, although it might not be suitable for all cases.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Simplified data tracing with reduced maintenance and more automation

  • October 08, 2024
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Fivetran is used as an ingestion tool to move data between different sources and destinations. It orchestrates a series of pipelines that can be easily set up manually without any technical experience. These pipelines can run daily according to a specific schedule, depending on the licensing level. Fivetran addresses schema changes and updates destination tables unless there's a major difference, which is helpful in integrating systems from third parties.

How has it helped my organization?

Before using Fivetran, most integrations were done manually, leading to a lead time of four to eight weeks for a new connection. Now, I can set up new connections in anywhere from a day to a week and a half, reducing data ingestion lead times by sixty to eighty percent.

There is a lot less maintenance to do on the pipelines, which has freed up development hours by about twenty percent. Overall, there's a big gain in development hours and less time maintaining data.

What is most valuable?

The simplicity and scalability are the strongest features of Fivetran. The learning curve is not steep, making it easy to get accustomed to. It's transparent in understanding when something fails, and the logging is detailed, which helps in auditing and accessing information rapidly.

For scalability, Fivetran charges less per row the more you use it, allowing you to move more data economically as you set up additional data pipelines.

What needs improvement?

The biggest area for improvement is in customization, particularly in how Fivetran socializes its tools. Many features like deploying Fivetran on-premises for security purposes or using connectors specific to systems like SAP are not well communicated. New users might not be aware of these features due to the lack of socialization when there are new releases or updates.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for about four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a nine out of ten. I have never had an issue with downtime at all, though I have encountered technical issues using the API in a more advanced fashion for custom setups.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the scalability as a solid nine. All you have to do is plug in a new data source, which contributes to your quota for different plans. Fivetran also provides flexibility in managing data ingestion costs through different plans.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service is very good and thorough, however, it can be slow, usually taking about three to five business days for a response. Generally, I would rate it a seven out of ten because of this lead time.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Fivetran, everything was developed by hand using Python. This switch to Fivetran was a big improvement.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for the standard cloud licenses is straightforward and simple. It's a matter of connecting data sources to destinations, which Fivetran's platform largely automates once you input the correct information.

What about the implementation team?

I handled the initial deployment myself.

What was our ROI?

Fivetran has drastically reduced the lead time for setting up new connections to one day to one and a half weeks, down from four to eight weeks. It has also decreased the time required for pipeline maintenance, resulting in a gain of sixty to seventy percent more development hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is based on how much data is ingested, not on the number of rows. The tool's features expand with higher licensing tiers, such as enterprise or business critical, which provide more secure options. The pricing is reasonable, allowing small companies to operate at a cost below forty thousand a year while larger companies experience diminishing costs per data unit as usage increases, projected not to exceed one hundred thousand per month.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Airbyte, Snowflake, and Databricks. Fivetran was ultimately chosen due to its simplicity in setup and configuration.

Snowflake and Databricks set up pipelines in a more complex way, and Databricks' orchestration workflow incurred heavier monthly costs.

What other advice do I have?

Fivetran is a very good tool for simplifying data management and ingestion. It is particularly useful for tracing data lineage, ensuring data flows correctly, and is beneficial if managing multiple data tools requires minimizing complexity.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
