Debian is my favourite operating system for desktop and server

  • March 20, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Debian is the ultimate operating system. Debian is strictly free software, but with the option to include non-free sources. Debian is maintained by an international community of expert volunteers. Debian offers a choice of stable, testing, or cutting-edge releases. Debian has an excellent packaging and upgrade system. Debian emphasises security and stability. Debian is suitable for both desktop and mission-critical servers.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's somewhat difficult to get started with modifying and installed package, as source code is not installed by default.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Debian as my main desktop operating system, and on my servers. I develop software and play video games on Debian. I run Debian in Virtualbox on Windows systems.

Debian is my server OS

  • July 13, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Debian is stable, with a great community, you can find 'how to' for whatever you want, it is perfect as a server operating system.
It is an old distribution with many users and contributors around the world, and it is used as base for big desktop (and server) distribution like ubuntu.
You can easily follow the upgrade of the system without needed to install again the whole system.
You can also find experts to help you if you need training or services.
And it's free !
What do you dislike about the product?
If I need to dislike something, sometimes for the stability purpose some software are kept back to an old version and we need additional repositories to enjoy new features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Every time I need to host a service I use debian as my OS, websites, services like xmpp, or email server.
It's free, when you have learn to use it, it costs you nothing more, it's a huge business quality.
You can spend more money on human resources instead off paying big prize for licenses when you can have one of the best product for free.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need a really good, stable and followed operating system you can go with debian blinded, it is not the most simple as desktop OS, ubuntu, based on debian is great and you are with a derivative, so debian is still here.
You can easily work under debian in a virtual machine if you work as a developer and automate a lot of thing with ansible (and vagrant for the development environment setup).
You can deploy debian in almost all cloud platform and the mentality is conservative enough to assure you the stability you need for a business.

debian stable packages.

  • March 04, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like debian because it is available for more architecture of processors, as much as 32 bits as 64 bits, has the ability to have very stable and robust packages, is highly customizable and has a higher performance.
What do you dislike about the product?
debian you do not have some popular packages, for them in their repositories those popular packages are replaced, to imitate the functionalities of those described above, such as word, excel, is supplanted by free office packages among other software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
in the company we use debian in its server version, to deploy web services platforms and file transfer systems, working up to the moment in a very stable and secure way.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
debian surpasses all distributions so well integrated are your ki packages I highly recommend, use it you will not regret it.

one of the best servers

  • February 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
what I like about this operating system is the great capacity of stable compiled packages, with respect to the different operating systems of this type of open source, the adaptability of its kernel is fantastic.
What do you dislike about the product?
must be immersed in the world of consols of this type of system a user from 0 is a bit difficult to learn and even more if it comes from an operating system such as windows, to use external devices must be mounted by console as they are in the case of servers.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
we currently use debian 9 for a web page platform, confiding their iptables to mitigate DDOS attacks, it should be noted that it is very stable.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Although not all window applications are available for debian, for the server environment is still one of the most robust and stable, I highly recommend using it for web applications, and ftp servers, sftp etc .
