CheckMK opinion as a long time user

  • November 16, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
By far CheckMK has the best auto discovery features and an easy to use API. For the ~500 servers in our stack, it took me less than an hour to get up and running.
What do you dislike about the product?
The rules definitions are a bit difficult for me to follow. For example, we have most of our servers on a unified port number but there are a few that use a different port number for various reasons. When using ssh as the connection method for the checkmk agent, everything defaults to the unified port, and I can't seem to define it using the excludes or server definitions. That's not a slight on checkmk-- I might be doing something wrong, I need to spend more time on it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our environment is a manual configuration and there's a lot of technical debt to work through because of it. Things such as services not set to come up after a reboot are a big problem and checkmk helps solve this problem with it's auto-discovery. It's fantastic at knowing the state of the system and

What do you dislike about the product?
last bugs in two latest releases 2.0.0p13 & 2.0.0p14
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
CheckMK is used to get notifications when something is wrong with infrastructure. In most cases, we can take action before customers even notice.

Clean look, fast monitoring, and easy to use

  • November 16, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The user interface is accommodating and intuitive. The history plots are very useful when identifying issues in production. We have been able to fix any problems before they affected customers.
What do you dislike about the product?
We have had issues with business aggregation being slow when monitoring many sites. Upgrading to version 2 was not painless and has taken us quite some time. Merging rules accross version horable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Real-time monitoring of critical infostructure, providing fast and accurate response to incidences and promising uptime and reliability reports for higher ups in an easy to understand format

Easy to Learn but Full of Advanced Features! Plus a Free Open Source Version!!

  • November 12, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
CheckMK is easy to set up and get monitoring quickly. After that, you can go in-depth with custom integrations, SNMP commands, contact groups, dashboards and more!
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish that there was a notification integration to Microsoft Teams. I used a GitHub script from the community that does work and is a modification of the Slack script (https://github.com/RileyMichael/checkmk-notify-teams). It would be nice to have this officially integrated. Secondarily two-factor authentication would be a great addition for logins!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We monitor carrier infrastructure and firewalls for hundreds of customers. We use this to proactively place tickets with ISPs for down circuits and avoid waiting for a customer to call us with a ticket. It gives our customers a faster resolution, and we are proactive with issues that may not be immediately apparent such as minor packet loss!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Test it in a lab! Open source version is a great way to see if it is a good fit.

Most complete monitoring tool

  • November 12, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The simplicity it takes us to go from zero to see everything that is going on in our or clients infrastructures, systems and applications.
There's nothing like CheckMK in the market.
What do you dislike about the product?
Honestly, there's not much to say. I believe that it could focus more on the application monitoring itself (APM). SSO would also be a great improvement.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Every client I've implemented CheckMK got to know their real infrastructure problems, even those they thought they didn't have. The vast amount of monitoring features gives us a great insight into the actual state of our systems.

It is very simple to implement in environment

  • November 12, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Very simple and quick to implement in environment.
What do you dislike about the product?
some problems with automatic update on redhat/centos
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitor whole infrastructure ;). We know earlier, for example, that the disk space is almost full, and we have time to react before system stop.

    Higher Education

Using the raw edition for more than a year. I'm pretty satisfied with it.

  • November 12, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It has a large number of plugins, and they work as expected.
What do you dislike about the product?
It has a complicated user interface, and the plugin installation on the clients is not that easy in the raw edition.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Having a monitoring tool like this is a great plus, cause I like to get alerts before my users realize there's a problem.

  • September 10, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Scalability, performance, and the ability to discover relevant monitoring parameters/services automatically
What do you dislike about the product?
GUI-Access to Rulesets within the versions 1.x.x
-> fixed in Version 2.x
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Proactive detection of issues on critial Healthcare Infrastructure
- Monitor more then 100 dedicated sites connected via VPN
- The ability to monitor heterogenous multi vendor/os environments (AIX,SunOS,Linux,Windows)

- We adapted the product to our own specific needs: e.g an interface to monitor our own PACS software solution
- Creating a pro-active Event Management Process based on a central core tool -> Checkmk
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The high number of features and possibilities can be a bit confusing at the beginning. Focus first on basics, like downloading the checkmk-agent and using the the discovery funtion to lookup available services.
