Onshape is a powerful MCAD tool

  • November 18, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In context design ability, configurations, fastened mates, handshaking between Drawings
What do you dislike about the product?
Entering text on drawings is cumbersome feels like it should be faster.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I design a lot of parts that are 3D printed - find the Boolean solution really useful for some of those designs. In comparison to previous software
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend Onshape as good MCAD software, it is continuously improving

Onshape Review

  • November 18, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape is cloud-based, so sharing and collaborating can be done with any device- you just need an internet connection. I can share my Onshape workspace, in real time, with a coworker on the other side of the globe (or down the hall) and have meaningful discussions regarding my design. Being able to design multiple interfacing parts within the Part Studio is a HUGE advantage. Before Onshape, I had to design all the parts independently, throw them into an assembly, and then do micro-adjustments to make them fit just right. Designing them all together in the Part Studio is a huge time and anxiety saver. The way you build assemblies with Mate Connectors is fabulous- most parts can be fully-defined with only one mate, not three. Tech support is very quick to respond when you have a question. Other options for answers are in Help and Forums. Training is top-notch; there is plenty available to help someone well-versed in CAD to become competent in Onshape very quickly.
What do you dislike about the product?
As great as Onshape is, there are numerous functionality deficits that some may be turned off by. However, Onshape is constantly evolving and adding to its functionality with Improvement Requests sent in via Support Tickets by the users. Every 3 weeks, a new update is launched and seemlessly incorporated into Onshape. It's just a matter of time before all the functionality of more-senior CAD packages will be present in Onshape, and when it does, it will surely be better than the rest. Besides, wherever Onshape's functionality may lack, there is usually a simple workaround.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Again, using Part Studio for my designs has made designing interfacing parts so much easier. And then assembling them with Mate Connectors- a breeze. One more advantage- in the 5 months that I've been using Onshape, I haven't had one single unannounced shutdown of the system. Huge time saver!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try Onshape. Take it for a test spin. Go through some of the basic tutorials to learn about the advantages of Onshape. Then you can make an informed decision based on your own experience with the package.

already great and I can help making it better

  • November 18, 2020

What do you like best about the product?
The philosophy of being usefull and reducing the ammount of clicks is great. but even better is their support. If I get stuck or want a change, I can make a screenshot, annotate, and within a day I get advise on how to approach a problem or a workarround. And good ideas become an improvement request.
This way Onshape is on top of the practical details of how the tool is used.
What do you dislike about the product?
The document structure and version control can get messy. And big files might get slow. Especially on WiFi. But this is solved by structuring your work, or making a version and deleting all old files.
For my design practice the second method works best since I do not need to manage production versions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OnShape allows for more intuitive setup of models and more robust performance.
Especially the partstudio idea solved a lot of document management issues I had with SolidWorks. I can focus on my design and functions.
That OnShape is browser based is nothing then positive. Same or even better performance, and I get to show designs away from my desktop.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
When switching, take the time to understand how Onshape is different from what you are used to. And get ready for some, "ow shit, this is great"
And use google with the phrase "how to do xxx in OnShape". You are guaranteed to get to an old forum thread discussing this problem.

Onshape was already COVID-crisis-proof

  • November 18, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I can log in to Onshape anywhere, I can share ongoing designs with colleagues and partners anywhere in the world, even walk them through my designs in real-time. When the COVID crisis started I could continue working without any hassle, from home.
What do you dislike about the product?
The absence of a rendering module in the program. It does not have to be top class, but just basic functions that outperform making a screendump.
I hate it that I need to do rendering in another program or buy add-ons that. In my opinion, this should be included.

Also I keep missing the basic 3 planes in assemblies, it must be my Solid Works background, but I am still not completely confident in applying the correct mates. Why not include these planes?
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I develop new products for our company and our partners. so I help to create the future.

What do you like best about the product?
We used OnShape to do detailed 3D designs for our Electronic Controllers. Love the ability to be able to do complicated designs easily, and collaborate between users. Can also easily share designs with customers for them to view.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it is difficult to print different designs for sharing with users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Detailed designs of our electronics panels which we can then integrate with the 3D board design from other packages to get the whole product suite.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great cloud based design solution

This software is my daily driver. I've based my entire product development company around it.

  • November 18, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The UI has been great for taking me from an absolute beginner to where I am today.

The Surfacing tools are second to none.

I really like that I can use scripting to integrate with other services.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish I could have it installed locally on my machine.

Needs more hotkey commands and the ability to customize hot keys.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I do everything from industrial design and concepts to mechanical design and factory drawings. I've made a career with this software
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do the trial and check it out yourself. It's like if Solidworks is a horse, Onshape is a Tesla.

Fast and Versatile Online 3D design tool

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
ability to access from anywhere and straighforward user interface. The version control and ability to work on multiple branches and merge is really powerful. The community FeatureScript library is fairly powerful as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
Still missing support for some features, especially with drawings. These are being slowly added
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Quick designs and prototyping. Ability to make modifications to existing models and test those without huge effort. Our contract manufacturer also uses Onshape so those files are direclty shared with us, and we can collaborate on the same document.
