Mixpanel for the small side project

What do you like best about the product?
Simple but powerful nice interface
Great video guide for new users and comprehensive documentation
A lot of great features: tracking users, events, custom user and event attributes
All data is visible right after some event happens, no need to wait for additional time
After registration, they create a sample project for you to show all their capabilities
Simple integration (they even provide Nginx config if you setup proxy via custom domain to overcome adblockers)
Lots of different charts: funnel (to track conventions), line/pie/cumulative (eg to track the number of events), retention, user flows
Ability to manually add any data to users
All users list with any data
Powerful filters
Ability to use it on web frontend, backend and mobile apps
All of the above is available in the forever free version
What do you dislike about the product?
The project timezone was set incorrectly after registration, this created confusing data before I figured out that I needed to set it correctly in the settings
If the value is not set (empty) it is visible as "undefined" in some charts and as an empty string in some other
uBlock origin blocks mixpanel (unclear why, it doesn't collect personal data) if you use it on the frontend. So you need either to set up a proxy on the backend side (to send requests to another domain that will redirect them to mixpanel) or use it on the backend side.
A bit complicated way of tracking sessions lenght based on events. Even with docs, it was not so easy to understand how it works. I initially thought that all sessions last at least 30 min by default. Only later I realized that it lasts only till the last event in the 30 min interval

Powerful analytics tool

What do you like best about the product?
It is very easy to build insight reports and dashboards. There is a lot of flexibility in displaying data which allows me to choose the best visualization. We have built several dashboards that vary in theme and are a quick way to get answers around specific segments of our product. It is also easy to look at retention on features within the product. This helps us in understanding how often new features that we deploy are being used by our users. Overall I find Mixpanel is very user friendly and easy to use. It is well supported and they are constantly adding new features to it to improve the product. They also offer regular webinars to help train users on how to use the more advanced features. I like that I can export my report into a csv so I can use a spreadsheet program to perform more advanced functions on the data.
I like that there are user properties we can track. Not only are we interested in seeing how often a feature is used, but we are also interested in which settings are the most commonly chosen ones. Our product has a lot of settings that the user can "set and forget" - and the user properties help us analyze those.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish that when I built an insight report, it gave me the option to see which events match my event criteria, to help me dig into specific examples of users that are using a particular event. From there I could read that user's event history to understand their flows before and after the event is triggered. It would also help me debug why some event properties come through as "undefined".
I dislike the new UI for the navigation in Mixpanel. On the left you have words, and on the right you have icons. Some icons on the right are dropdown menus just like the word Reports is on the left, but there is no visual indicator that it's a menu. After this new UI was deployed, it took us all awhile to find the "Live View" option which is hidden in a menu that you only see by clicking an icon. I find this UI inconsistent and confusing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Mixpanel to understand how users are using our product - where are they spending the most time, which user types use which features, how well are new features performing, etc. Mixpanel has helped us use data to drive decisions around our product roadmap. By understanding where users are spending their time, we know where to invest in our product. Using Mixpanel's analytics, we can draw conclusions about our user's wants and needs from the data instead of relying on customer research which can be very time consuming.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would definitely recommend using Mixpanel. It is a very powerful analytics tool that is easy to use and will help you turn your organization towards being data-driven. I would recommend when you use it that you set up a company template for property names and share all event information in one place so it is easy to reference and maintain.

Scalability, accuracy and pretty interface

What do you like best about the product?
I love the user interface of Mixpanel. It has a massive selection of reports, and all events are tracked with very high accuracy.
What do you dislike about the product?
Poor customer support and feedback communication. I sent an email two days ago, and I didn't receive any answer yet. :(

What do you like best about the product?
How easy is to analyze data in real time, how friendly is to create dashboards with multiple data. All data integrates in seconds having always all the information gather in one place.
What do you dislike about the product?
Somethings the platforms crashes, not common but happens.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Consolidating all data in one place being able to analyze in real-time.

Great tool, easy to handle even for non-experts.

What do you like best about the product?
Ability to handle data on multiple levels (i.e. company and user level), being incredibly flexible and accommodating to various data architectures. It's also been great to see how easily we've been able to implement it across the whole business without requiring training. It's incredibly user friendly
What do you dislike about the product?
Not perhaps a dislike per say, but I'd like to set up events within mixpanel based on user properties, similar to how you are currently able to set up custom events based on other events. I'd also like to see the integrations built out further, we use marketo and itd be great to have a 2-way native integration where we can see and track events such as email opens clicks etc.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our ability to understand user behavior and have the ability to rapidly drive uptake. I love that I have full visibility of the customer journey, from acquisition through to usage.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take it for a trial, it's incredibly sophisticated and accommodating to complex setups. I've used Amplitude before, which is also beautiful, however, I tend to find Mixpanel slightly more mature.

Slicing and dicing data is a seamless experience

What do you like best about the product?
We use the Dashboard and Insights section on a weekly basis. My favourite tool is the insights page where we can analyse user activity across our app. I love the snappiness of the UI and the ability to get the results we want quickly. The fast dropdown search fields is also a big winner. We get daily and weekly emails which gives us an effortless glance of recent activity.
What do you dislike about the product?
Our biggest pain point is getting events past browser ad blockers. This causes the data to be under representative of true user sessions.
Sometimes the aggregation takes a while to happen, especially with large datasets. Sometimes the page doesn't stop loading.
It would be nice to offer suggestions on how to clean up our data or when to remove events with no data as we have quite a few of them.
Our event names have a specific long syntax so it would be beneficial to see the full name of the event clearly on the Insights page.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We pipe our events into Mixpanel and slice and dice our data depending on the use case. Some of our use cases are growth potential, customer funnel monitoring, tracking activity over time, most used features, etc. Because we don't have to use SQL or code we are able to get the data we want easily.
We don't use most of the features apart from Insights, Funnels and the Dashboard.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Mixpanel is the best tool to slice and dice your events. Garbage in gives you garbage out, so make sure you have a clear and representative event taxonomy in order to make the most of Mixpanel.

What do you like best about the product?
Its super easy to integrate and get started. We were referred to Mixpanel the night before by an interested investor, and by the following morning we were able to provide the data they were asking for!

That downtime the other day was HORRENDOUS

What do you like best about the product?
Mixpanel has been my go to product analytics tool for so many years... It's powerful yet fast and intuitive, allowing me to build dashboards 10x faster, without needing to write any SQL.

Mixpanel gives agency to non-technical users like me to obtain all the metrics I need to make key decisions, which would otherwise require a full time data engineer to build and maintain them in a traditional in-house data analytics stack.
What do you dislike about the product?
The way aliases and identity merging are handled could be improved. The Live view could also have deeper search & filtering capabilities and have a longer retention period.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it to track our acquisition and activation events and funnels, and to improve our understanding of our user's behavior to inform product decisions.

Create a tracking plan using the best practices recommended before sending the events to the tool. Know what you need to measure, before implementing. Start with the basics and gradually improve your analysis.
