Fast and reliable
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use, many features that competitors software lack, use of AI, customer support. No downtime
What do you dislike about the product?
None that I can think of, it really is my favourite tool. If any, I would like to have more AI options to choose from/the possibility to edit AI suggestions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Faster turnaround
Long-time Smartling admin, client-side
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling has a robust feature list, allows you to customize it yourself to use your own linguists or theirs depending on workflow, your own LLM or theirs, depending on workflow, and it has integrations with many platforms.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find their platform outdated and clunky. The UI/UX is not intuitive and needs an overhaul.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling is keeping all our translations in one place and is a source of truth for final versions. Its TM is applicable across projects.
Good CAT tool, high volume of orders, and friendly PMs
What do you like best about the product?
I have been working almost daily with Smartling since 2019, initially through an agency and, after its closure, directly for Smartling since September 2024. I work both as a translator and as an editor, revising machine translations, and occasionally I take on assignments for other tasks. I am part of many fixed teams, so I regularly translate for the same clients. This is not only more pleasant for me (because you get to know the style guide, the products, the glossary, etc. after a while), but it also benefits the quality.
The volume of work is good and ranges from tiny jobs with fewer than ten words to jobs with several tens of thousands of words. The PMs are friendly and usually respond quickly. The CAT tool is very responsive, which I like. In my experience, MemoQ and Phrase are somewhat slower. Of course, there are always bugs that change every few months and can be more or less annoying. Nevertheless, the CAT tool is my favorite, and I wish I could use it for projects for other clients as well. In particular, the search function works better than the competition.
Thanks to the Live Invoice, where jobs appear a few minutes after submission, you always have a good overview of the monthly earnings. Only jobs that are done on an hourly rate basis appear on the last day of the month.

What do you dislike about the product?
The PMs sometimes have unrealistic expectations about how many words can be completed in a given time. Sometimes I am contacted about urgent projects that absolutely must be completed urgently, but in most cases, there is no Rush Premium for this.
The CAT tool has some bugs (strings rearrange themselves when you switch pages, so that half of the strings on the page are already loaded, etc.). Previously, you could highlight text and drag it to the next string to copy it there. This hasn't been possible for about two years and is sorely missed.
Validation matches are only paid at half the normal word rate, but often do not require only half the effort. If a translator only receives half the word rate, they logically have to work twice as fast to achieve the same hourly rate. Therefore, no research or inquiries are made for validation matches. In my opinion, the system for detecting which strings should be validation matches does not work very well, and if the translator does not want to pay the price for this (in the form of a lower hourly rate), the customer does so through poorer quality in these strings.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Smartling as a freelancer, not as a client.
A user-friendly platform with nice people behind it
What do you like best about the product?
The ease of use, the intuitive interface, the interactivity with clients for clarifications, IA (helpful for faster job deliveries), and the support responsiveness
What do you dislike about the product?
IA help (also a downside when it is a brake on creativity), the system tends to be slower with large volume jobs
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I can't see any particular problem
Clean, Fast and Context-Friendly Platform
What do you like best about the product?
I've used Smartling mainly as a project manager for over 10 years, but I’ll sometimes jump in for review or editing. The feature I appreciate the most here is the visual context. With file types like IDML (which we handle a lot) it’s helpful to actually see how the text will sit in the final design.
Smartling also provides good visibility on freelancers and where things are in progress. The platform itself is always quick and responsive, and the interface is clean, which makes it easy to onboard new translators.
Finally, the glossary feature has been improving steadily, which makes consistency a lot easier to maintain across projects. Compared to Phrase, a lot of consideration has gone into the CAT tool for freelancers, which also helps to keep them using the platform confidently.

What do you dislike about the product?
The parsing engine struggles sometimes when files are heavily segmented—like PDFs exported to Word. It doesn’t always handle them well, and we sometimes spend extra time working on fragmented strings.
As with all CAT tools, it’s also very string-focused, which can be limiting with certain file types. SRT subtitle files, for example, create issues with Asian languages where syntax doesn't flow as expected. It's not anything that other CAT tools are necessarily doing better, but I feel there could be a smoother process.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onboarding freelancers to new tools is always a struggle, but the platform's reliability makes it easier to keep good relationships. The support team are really quick to respond with any technical concerns, so that also helps.
Effortless and individual way of working.
What do you like best about the product?
I like that I am free to accept jobs according to my available time. This enables an individual and independent way of working, without having to wait for jobs to come along.
What do you dislike about the product?
The many different work flows can be a bit confusing and sometimes I feel like different workflows aren't specified obviously enough.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I don't use Smartling in order to solve any business problems.
A centralized platform that allows to focus on what really matters.
What do you like best about the product?
I appreciate that tasks are assigned automatically and that delivery can be done directly on the platform. Invoicing is also automated. There is no time wasted on communication, so we can focus on getting the job done. We also have complete visibility of current and upcoming tasks. The tool is easy to use and intuitive. The help center is comprehensive, and the support team is responsive when needed.
What do you dislike about the product?
Quality checks are not optimized and sometimes lead to numerous false positives (for example, adding non-breaking spaces is flagged as an error, even though they are essential for a high-quality translation), which makes this step long and tedious and makes it difficult to identify true positives. The fact that everything is automated takes away the human touch: tasks can be removed from our queue without notice, which is disrespectful of our time and our work.

Translation Management
The best translation tool on the market
What do you like best about the product?
I’ve been working with Smartling for almost ten years, and it’s by far the easiest and most intuitive platform I’ve used. The interface is clean and attractive, with all the features translators need to get their work done efficiently. What I appreciate most is how their team is always innovating and rolling out new technology, making sure linguists have access to the latest tools to simplify our job.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Quality Checks feature could be improved by adding an option to select and ignore multiple issues at once. This would make it easier for translators to dismiss false positives of the same type instead of having to go through them one by one.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling simplifies translation process, helping linguists deliver localized content to a global audience faster.
All-in-one solution with great support
What do you like best about the product?
It’s easy to use and very intuitive. I can check TB and TM in real time, which makes my work faster and smoother. I also like being able to flag and track issues, as it helps me communicate with PMs and clients quickly and get feedback. The Smartling PMs are always friendly and responsive, and the automated invoice system is very convenient.
What do you dislike about the product?
It’s difficult to manage large projects because the platform slows down. Also, more detailed sorting and filtering options would make handling big projects easier.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It’s very convenient to handle everything in one platform—translation tasks, issue flagging, and invoices. Even if a problem comes up, the PMs respond quickly, so I rarely experience any major inconvenience.
Great place to work
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling recognized my talent as a translator and gave me opportunities for growth.
What do you dislike about the product?
I often miss the greater control over the user interface and features that you get with native CAT tools. Some features and customizability is sacrificed for ease of use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I work as a translator and language lead on the platform.
