NX/UG present and future of designing

What do you like best about the product?
NX is best software present in the market for designing. All major companies are switching to NX from catia. It is very easy to learn and work with it. It's level of rendering options cannot be found in any of the software. It has search command right on your top toolbar, where we can search all the tools very easily. We can get CNC machine program for the product. It is best for part design, assemblies, sheet metal design and surface modelling. It does take much time to load like catia.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is a costly software. It is one step behind of catia wirh respect to surface designing and aerodynamic modelling.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I heavily use for part design, assemblies and rendering.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Guys all companies like mercedes are upgrading themselves to NX, so I suggest you also to upgrade to NX.

NX Review

  • March 18, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Design to Siemens NX software is a common software used in the design engineering field to model concepts in 3D. The best feature that Design to Siemens NX software has that other comparable 3D CAD software do not have is the ability to easily do PLM analysis on models.
What do you dislike about the product?
The thing that I dislike about Design to Siemens NX software is that it is not as user friendly as other 3D CAD software. A lot of the commands and buttons are not in intuitive places.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Design to Siemens NX software can solve a lot of business problems including drafting and creating 3D CAD models to share ideas. Design to Siemens NX software is also good for doing PLM analysis.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are someone who is looking for an inexpensive 3D Computer Aided Design software, I would recommend trying Design to Siemens NX software, especially if you are wanting to do PLM analysis on your models.

What do you like best about the product?
Cad 3d modeling and drafting is good, it has good integration with Teamcenter PLM. Has good capabilities to translate data to neutral formats like PDF, JT, Step and Parasolid.
What do you dislike about the product?
Customizing NX is complicated just like other CAD tools. may be that will improve.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use NX extensively in our Product design and manufacturing process.

Complex but outdated and confusing CAD program

  • July 29, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
NX is very capable in tools and have a comprehensive set of features in 3D modelling. The Parasolid core is stable and capable of handling many complex geometries. Simulation tools are very advanced once you have taken all the time needed to learn them.
What do you dislike about the product?
First the price is absolutely too high for what you get. Everything cost extra in terms of licensing and some basic functions demands extra modules to work. The functionality is not much better than Solidworks or Inventor but cost many times more.

The user interface is once you learned it decent but it is a mix of new ribbons and old menus. Some dialogs are also very outdated in terms of user experience, you have no clue how to use them without googling for hours. There is also a limited source of information to find on Internet so you have to sign a license from Siemens for "Learning advantage". Very clever to make the program so difficult to use that you have to sign an extra help to understand it. At my work we are constant struggling with understanding how to work with the software and every newcomer have a steep learning curve if they are used to other more user friendly CAD software like Solidworks or Inventor.

The performance is poor and large assemblies tends to be very slow and sluggish to work with. Back in the 90's NX was known for being one of the best in terms of large assemblies but is has not developed at all since then. Multi-core CPU's and GPU cores are not utilized well and the waiting time for updating models ans drawings can be very time consuming. The Parasolid core shows it's age and belongs to another decade than more modern design software that handles advanced lightning and material surfaces much better and faster.

NX is built of Application modules and these are not working well together all the time. It is also a mix of old features and newly added replacements without good interaction. For example layers can be handled in two different ways and depending which you use the outcome will be different. Working with drawings is a nightmare in terms of user friendliness. Many basic features are confusing and counter productive to use and at the same time sometimes very slow. If you are used to make drawings in Solidworks or Inventor you will find NX to be 20 years behind in terms of effectiveness. For example Balloons and Part lists are divided into "Manual" and "Auto" and they are not compatible with each other. "Auto balloons" can not be stacked but "Manual baloons" can and so on. There is no logic behind some of the features implementation.

In general the software is stable but there are some irritating bugs here and there that you have to be aware of for every release. Siemens are not fast on fixing these and send out service packs. Sometimes the only solution is to buy "the next version" for a lot of money. Siemens really know how to make money from customers.

The compatibility to other softwares are quite poor if they are not compatible with the Parasolid core. It heavily relies on old formats such as STEP and IGES. JT format is OK but exporting and importing is time consuming not without problems. The choice of formats to import from other "Automative" softwares such as Creo or Catia is rather poor. If you work in other business NX is not very good in compatibility.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Electrical Plant design and layout drawings. It has a wide set of modelling features.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be aware of your needs and your employees knowledge before considering buying the high price tag for NX. There are much more affordable and easier to use softwares that can do almost the same, and sometimes more, then NX which starts to show signs of outdated interface and poor user experience. If working with large assemblies you shall also do a performance check if it can handle all information and geometry well.
