Need to provide portal view of content
What do you like best about the product?
Full interactive reports that were introduced with Cognos Analytics 11. They give more control to users in analyzing/filtering their report data.
What do you dislike about the product?
The fact that portal pages were removed in CA11. They still work but there is no mechanism to modifying them or add more portal pages / portlets.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Cognos leaps back into the BI Competition
What do you like best about the product?
Enterprise BI at its best drawing on 40+ years of Enterprise BI experience.
What do you dislike about the product?
Perceived as old school and ownded by IT, but now available in the Cloud using advanced AI technologies.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Solid BI from operational reporting to adhoc query. Easy self-service and guided analytics.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you've not taken a look at Cognos in a few years - make sure you do now!!! It's come a long way from the days of Series 7, now incorporating the benefits of Watson Analytics (RIP).
Cognos is a great reporting tool
What do you like best about the product?
IBM Cognos Dashboard Embedded is a great reporting tool. It allows you to view reports and information that normally would be too large and timely to digest.
What do you dislike about the product?
The creation is a little difficult, but overall, it is a great product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This allows you to manipulate big data into reports that management actually wants to look at.

Everything is setup by our IT dept but the way reporting is displayed is very informative and keeps track of everything

It sometimes is abit lagy and slow, may be it's because we run it through Citrix Receiver remotely

Cognos for Reconciliations
What do you like best about the product?
Cognos has been a huge help when it comes to reconciliation expenses between the two accounting code systems that I am required to use. Because my accounting systems do not feed into each other or utilize any of the same accounting codes. The reports I run in Cognos act as the middle-man for me to produce my reports.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that Cognos has to update overnight and it seems to have processing errors often. When we need to make a correction to an account, I have to wait until the next day to pull accurate transaction histories. It would be extremely helpful if Cognos could be refreshed more often. (The time frame for which Cognos updates might be an entity IT decision and not an actual Cognos decision, but for now, this is what I dislike.)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Account reconciliations that provide information for monthly board reporting and the annual financial report and audit. The report I utilize the most is the Transaction History Report.

The design is nit loaded with unnecessary details

That I have to highlight the order number before taking any actions in the order in the orders window, if I forget so, nothing will happen

Good software but expensive for personal use
What do you like best about the product?
I like how cognos makes it easy to build dashboards without having to go much in depth of the query building and optimization.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are a few things which only an experienced person can figure out and pay attention to details. A beginner might miss out on things like this.

Built a dashboard for a major american bank for analytics of their customers.

Make sure that you get trained by an experienced professional before you start using it yourself.
Congo’s provides easy reporting
What do you like best about the product?
I like the user interface of this product. The functionality makes it extremely easy for users (even new users) to build customized reports to see sales data in numerous variations.
What do you dislike about the product?
The inability to input parts list from an excel format to run a query (easily without having to basically write code)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use this daily in product management to review our product line sales, margins, customer data, etc to determine things such as “end of life” for products and customer sales performance.
IBM Cognos Analytics for Performance Reporting
What do you like best about the product?
Performance reports can be run in IBM Cognos Analytics at any time and by any employee with a valid log-in. Daily process occurs each evening, in addition to month-end and preliminary processing. The interface enables users to share content and reports with a business team or maintain a personal file of reports that are used internally only. Sorting and labeling reports and folders is easy and straightforward for users who are familiar with PC operating systems.
What do you dislike about the product?
Running reports can be slow when data are being loaded to the Data Warehouse, thus limited the tool's usefulness when reports are needed ASAP at an inconvenient time. There is also a learning curve for new users to become comfortable with using the system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The IBM Cognos Analytics user interface allows the company to automatically generate and share reports with the whole company or with smaller units/teams within the company. It serves as a single location for running, storing, and sharing these reports without requiring users to access another application.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure that you let your employees know if/when reports are available in Cognos. There are no automatic updates sent out via email, so employees will need to know to go into the system themselves to access the reports. Also make sure that employees have adequate time to complete any trainings or orientation sessions so that they can run and read reports correctly.
Good analytics for BIG data
What do you like best about the product?
Cognos is a really useful, powerful platform that can handle a LOT of data and gives you the freedom to organize and compare data in many different ways. I can look at trends in data over different years, quarters, months, etc, and I can also compare across departments at my company depending on how I query the data.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a fairly steep learning curve when using Cognos. It isn't always very intuitive, but lots of that has to do with how your company sorts and organizes their data. Also, there isn't a great way to visualize the data other than by using numbers. It isn't great at helping outsiders understand the information quickly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to find trends, answer specific questions that department heads have, and track expenses, budgets, basically any data that we want to. As long as the people who need the answers understand the basic information at our company, Cognos does a great job of helping everyone move forward with better information.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're expecting Cognos to be like Tableau or other data visualization software, this isn't for you. It's good at handling BIG data and keeping track of thousands of lines of information, but it doesn't do much to visualize it. It can present it in numeric forms and
