Go-to-tool for Column Level Lineage

  • June 22, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Things that I like -
1. Column level lineage - it helps in identifying the downstream dependencies and if things would break if there is a change happening to the existing field
2. End to End lineage available if you have your transformational tool, data warehouse and reporting tool integrated
3. Seamless integration with the most used tools in the market
4. Great Customer Support team
What do you dislike about the product?
Things that I think can be added/improved -
1. History of changes happening in select star - I think this is already in the product roadmap and will be released soon
2. API documentation and support
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have a long list of tables built across different environments, and it wasn't easy to make any changes without knowing the downstream impact. Select Star helped identify what downstream changes would must be done with intact production reporting. The product is also helping us streamline our data cataloguing, where data owners can add field descriptions, tags etc.

A True Gamechanger for Fivetran Analytics

  • May 26, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Select Star has been an invaluable tool for our data team here at Fivetran. We have quickly learned what our most popular assets are, enabled our team to find data assets and linage swiftly, and began to decrease tech debt using Select Star.
What do you dislike about the product?
Select Star has been a little difficult for our non-technical users to pick up, but the Select Star has been incredibly helpful with enablement materials and support.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As we continue to evolve and update our data assets, Select Star has been invaluable for helping us deprecate assets while ensuring we are actively considering downstream dependencies.

Review of SelectStar

  • May 01, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
As a developer, selectstar has been really helpful in understanding what tables and columns people are using. This makes deprecation of columns and tables or migrations run more smoothly.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think there could be some enhancements on column popularity . Currently, if a table is part of a join, its not included in the popularity. This is misleading because not all tables are part of Select * from table queries.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Understanding who is using what data at the company.

Our analytics data dictionary

  • April 28, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Great to be able to track data lineage. When we have changes pending to our dbt model, one of our standard steps is to check the Select Star lineage to evaluate impact. I use it almost every day to check stuff.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not much to dislike! A few small things - it can't parse SQL using `exclude` and it doesn't track lineage to Mode definitions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As an analyst, Select Star makes it much easier to understand and visualize our data model. The popularity metrics are a great feature - nice to be able to see how many reports or downstream views reference a particular field.

a map for data

  • April 20, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Lineage and connection to Tableau are a gamechanger
What do you dislike about the product?
Some times the queries take too long. It can get slow at times depending on the data you're looking for.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our data warehouse is way too big for anyone to know entirely. This helps us find fields we didn't know exist, and to put them to use very easily

Better data discovery and Better data governance

  • March 08, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The thing that makes me think positively about Select star is the Search bar. The search bar at the top of the page allows you to search for any data asset, using spaces as delimiters. The search results page includes filters for Asset Types, Tags, Owners, and more, which can be adjusted to display or hide specific items. This is a helpful tool for data professionals looking to quickly and easily find data objects across a range of sources.
What do you dislike about the product?
The thing that could be improved is that when organisations turn off data edit on the Select Star, even the Admin and Data manager can not edit it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Select star help us better data discovery and Better data governance. As I mentioned before, Search bar help our organisation do better data discovery. If we are talking about better data governance, Select Star allows companies to assign owners to datasets, helping to ensure data is well-documented and properly maintained. It also helps identify abandoned datasets that may need to be removed or updated.

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of connectivity to existing BI stack
What do you dislike about the product?
UI is not mature enough compared to competitiors

One tool to show complete data lineage for Analysts and documentation of important business and technical concepts, and strategic KPIs. Complete lineage helps to track data flow from source to reporting layer

SelectStar helps our team learn our data model quickly and easily without needing hundreds of docs

  • July 19, 2022
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I really love SelectStar's popular joins feature. With many fields named differently and tribal knowledge being a large storage space for the best way to join different tables, it makes it easier for me to figure out how to join two different tables without having to interrupt other folks.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish we could have SelectStar sync in our data from every single data pipeline. It's so helpful, that I'd like it available in even more areas of the business.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It requires us to focus less of our time on creating documentation around our data warehouses and data visualization programs and more time actually using the data to solve problems.
