Great tool
What do you like best about the product?
I’ve been using Select Star for a few months now, and it’s become one of the more reliable tools in my data stack. The UI is clean and easy to navigate, and it’s helped me trace column-level lineage across some pretty complex models without having to dig through layers of SQL manually. That alone saves me a lot of time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Select Star’s been useful for lineage and metadata, but it’s not without flaws. The lineage view can get messy with large datasets, and sometimes it’s hard to filter down to what you actually need. The popularity and usage metrics are helpful, but not always accurate. It’s great for surfacing insights, but not something I’d rely on as a source of truth without a second look.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Select Star helps solve the problem of data discoverability and tribal knowledge. Before, it was hard to know which tables were actually being used, who owned them, or how things were connected without asking around or digging through SQL. Now I can quickly trace lineage, see usage stats, and figure out what’s safe to change or deprecate. It’s especially helpful for reducing back-and-forth when onboarding new team members or answering ad hoc requests.

Data Dictionary, especially for ramping up in a new firm

One of the standout features is the column-level lineage. It’s incredibly powerful and allows me to trace data flows with precision, which has been invaluable for ensuring data quality and accuracy in my work.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing, it perfectly meets my needs daily.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SelectStar provides better visibility into data dependencies, enabling proactive responses to changes that could impact business reporting.

Can sometimes can be a little slow to load.

I use select star on a daily basis. I find it to be very useful for data discovery.

It makes navigating our complex data model substantially easier.

Nothing comes to mind. Curious to see what they build in the future.

Maybe missing some features like more capabilities in terms of reporting (ad-hoc reports with existing metadata)

What do you like best about the product?
I am still in the early stages of using Select Star but I immediately saw the potential after watching a few demos and reading case studies. I really like the idea of using this tool to complete our Single Source of Truth.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't see any dislikes or downsides to Select Star just yet.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Having a reliable SoT and data disctionary for our users to refer to when they're struggling to find the lineage to specific fields names or KPIs.
It's a useful tool if you can't have something customized

you can catolog all datasources and dashboards, and easily track the unused and most used ones. So, you can plan deprecation and focus on which ones take more traction and need your attention.

What do you dislike about the product?
1. I think that the ai-bot still needs a lot of improvent - not able to anwer many question, but to guide you, so that you answer by yourself
2. some easy fixes that could help faster set-up, ie add mass labeling in dashboards

- we labeled all the deprecated dashboards and tables, and planned deletions
- we tracked the most queried tables and planned optimizations ie partitions and indexing
On boarding of new hires
- teach them how to use select star to find the initial sources

- we plan to include documentation for business KPIs and how to calculate
