Granular IT Planning with Robust Functionality
What do you like best about the product?
I love IBM Apptio's capability for granular planning in key IT functions, a feature that outshines our existing ERP system. It empowers us to plan at an incredibly detailed level, such as planning by AWS Application and individual license name, unlike our current system, which only allows for aggregate account planning. This level of granularity is crucial for our domain-specific planning and effective management of change cost drivers. The ability to address these complexities directly within our forecasting processes enhances our overall planning effectiveness.
What do you dislike about the product?
Aligning actual expenses to planned expenses has been a small challenge. The build-out process has been extensive due to management demands on data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use IBM Apptio for granular planning in key IT functions, allowing us to plan by domains, AWS applications, and licenses. This enhances our planning and forecasting abilities beyond what ERP offers, although aligning actual to planned expenses is a challenge.

I appreciate the dashboard views in IBM Apptio, as they provide clear and organized visual insights into our data, making it easier to comprehend and manage our technology costs. Additionally, I value that IBM Apptio leverages the Technology Business Management (TBM) framework, which aligns our IT decisions with business priorities and enhances our strategic planning capabilities.
What do you dislike about the product?

Seamless Cloud Cost Management & Reporting
What do you like best about the product?
I find IBM Apptio highly beneficial for managing cloud costs and reporting, thanks to its robust features. The TBM (Technology Business Management) table customization is a standout feature that allows me to tailor reports specifically to our business needs. This customization supports detailed visibility into container costs and enables efficient budgeting and planning. I can allocate costs and generate customized reports that provide valuable budgets vs. actual insights for our business units. Moreover, the initial setup of IBM Apptio was very straightforward, allowing me to have a working dashboard within just a few days, which speaks to the product's user-friendly interface and efficient onboarding process.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find the container insights and optimization recommendations lacking, which affects my ability to effectively manage resources. Additionally, the ability to push changes to business maps on demand is a feature that is not as seamless as I would like, leading to inefficiencies in making real-time updates.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use IBM Apptio for visibility and reporting on cloud costs, allowing me to allocate costs, customize reports, and provide budget vs actuals to our business units.
Valuable Insights, But Setup Needs Improvement
What do you like best about the product?
I appreciate having all financial data organized in one place with IBM Apptio, which aids significantly in financial transparency, planning, and forecasting. This consolidation of information empowers me to perform budget variance analysis and make more informed forecasting decisions, which is invaluable for managing the total cost of ownership in the future state.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find the education for TBMA lacking. Even after a year and completing all available education, there are still knowledge gaps. Some sessions are only available in person, which limits accessibility, and I struggle with the education portal when trying to find specific sessions to address my questions because searching for issues is difficult. Additionally, the initial setup was challenging due to a lack of insights into the TBM taxonomy and framework. IBM Apptio seemed more focused on implementing a system rather than a framework, making it hard for us as customers to understand the difference. I would recommend Apptio as a system, but would hesitate to recommend their implementation and support services.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use IBM Apptio for financial transparency, budget variance analysis, and planning, benefiting from having all data centralized in one place.

It creates transparency in our IT costs, contributing significantly to better understanding and management. The support from the IBM team during the initial setup made the process quite easy, enhancing its user-friendliness and ease of adoption. Although I envision further enhancements like having a native Japanese UI and the ability to customize dashboards for specific clients and accounts, the current capabilities already add notable value to my work.

Powerful Cost Transparency with Intricate Setup
What do you like best about the product?
I like the comprehensive out-of-the-box reporting features provided by IBM Apptio, which streamline analysis and reporting processes significantly. The ease of drilling into reports to access detailed insights beyond the rolled-up totals is another exceptional feature, making data analysis more flexible and insightful for understanding the finer points of our financial structure. Additionally, IBM Apptio's ability to translate financial data into a common language comprehensible to the business enhances our organisational communication and efficiency.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think one challenge with IBM Apptio is that it requires a very specific skill set to build out and maintain the model within the TBM Studio. It would be great if it was a little more user-friendly on the back end and didn't require as much from initial support users. The initial setup was also a bit complicated and took a lot of work, as it involves many intricacies in building out the cost model.

These features collectively provide considerable value realization for IT spend, enhancing my ability to plan, forecast, and manage tasks effectively. The combination of streamlined planning and insightful reporting makes IBM Apptio an indispensable tool in my professional activities.
