Jamf Connect - Neat, but outside our budget
What do you like best about the product?
We evaluated Jamf Connect and found the domain login features to be helpful and convenient. Just in time account provisioning is such a great convenience and would allow us some better flexibility for loaner and shared workstations.
What do you dislike about the product?
Having to login twice when FileVault is enabled is frustrating. Our biggest roadblock, however, was the cost. With Jamf Pro costs already having increased pretty significantly over the past few years, adding in the cost of Jamf Connect just wasn't feasible, as interested as we were in the product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We only evaluated Jamf connect and were not able to bite the bullet on purchasing it due to its price. Jamf Connect would have solved the issue of requiring an existing account to create new users and having to use a third party app to keep network and local account passwords in sync.
Simplified login process with enhanced security and improved user management
What is our primary use case?
The primary use cases of Jamf Connect in my customer's company include the login screen, dual login screen, and integration with Okta IDP.
How has it helped my organization?
Jamf Connect has helped by disabling the network login screen, ensuring users only need to enter their password once, which has made the client very happy. This has greatly improved IT security and user management.
What is most valuable?
Most valuable features of Jamf Connect is its ability to streamline user authentication and identity management for macOS devices. It enables single sign-on (SSO) capabilities, allowing users to log in with their cloud identity credentials (like Azure AD or Okta) instead of traditional local accounts. This not only simplifies the login process but also enhances security by centralizing user management and reducing the risk of password-related issues. Additionally, Jamf Connect supports features like password synchronization and account provisioning, making it easier for IT teams to manage user access across devices.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been familiar with Jamf Connect for less than eight years. I recently deployed it, and it is working fine.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Jamf Connect is really useful for security purposes and scalability. It eliminates the need to bind Mac devices to Active Directory, allowing local user and password syncing directly. This makes it more compatible with Apple devices.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Jamf Connect involved thorough planning, and once the configuration policies were created, the deployment was very quick.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I am not involved in the pricing of anything in my current or customer's company.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Jamf Connect to companies who do not want to bind their devices to Active Directory due to compatibility issues with Apple devices. Active Directory works, but there are many complications with password syncing and keychains.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
Way better alternative to AD bound macs, but still has its own quirks
What do you like best about the product?
The product is a lot more reliable than when we had our shared macbooks bound to active directory.
What do you dislike about the product?
The product still has its own issues at times. A lot of the issues stem from Apple updates and waiting for the product to get its own update from Jamf.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed a way for multiple people to log into the same machines for labs and checkout computers. We previously had them bound to Active Directly but were constantly running into issues with that and having to unbind and bind machines all of the time. This product allows our staff to log in with their Google account into the machines.
Jamf Connect: Perfect for lab environments
What do you like best about the product?
Each student can sit down at any computer running Jamf Connect and log on with their Entra ID credentials. It will create a local account for the student if one doesn't yet exist, and then sync their Entra ID password with the local account. The just-in-time account creation makes this product perfect in lab enviornments where you do not know ahead of time who will need to log onto the computer.
Another awesome feature is the ability to customize the login window completely. You can create a polished, professional, branded login window that really looks good. It's awesome to have the school's name and logo right there where everyone logs on.
Jamf provides a great utility to help you implement the product. It's very easy, especially if you also use Jamf Pro! If you don't have Entra ID, it can integrate with other identity providers such as Okta or Google.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only dislike I have with it (and this is not Jamf's fault, it's an Apple limitation) is if you have enabled FileVault, there will be two logins when you turn the computer on. You will first need to unlock the hard drive with the FileVault password, then enter your Entra ID credentials. It is for this reason that I mostly use it for lab environments or other shared desktops.
The double login only occurs after a restart, so it's not really that much of an inconvenience to be honest.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It gives you the ability to seamlessly log onto the local computer with Entra ID or other IdP credentials.
