In Depth Network Performance Monitoring & Troubleshooting

  • April 07, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
A few great things about NPM - NetPath, Network Insight for Cisco, F5, Palo Alto, Dynamic Maps, Layer 2 and Layer 3 topology discovery..
NetPath is a great hop by hop analysis tool and very useful for troubleshooting network delays, configuration issues, packet drops along the path taken to reach a particular service being served at a TCP port level.
Network InSights for various devices are adding more value - eg. Cisco ASA HA topology, Cisco stackable switches, Site-to-Site VPN's, F5 load balancing.
Dynamic Maps 2.0 are much better than the erstwhile Network Atlas.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's not actually a dislike but more of customization flexibility - ability to chose colors, fonts etc on Dashboards, Maps etc.
Need of a common discovery engine across all Orion modules. (This pertains to other modules under Orion like IPAM, UDT, NCM and NTA)
SolarWinds can help by increasing and creating more ready to pick widgets that can be just a drag and drop to dashboards.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The ability to identify hardware issues like power supply failures, cooling issues etc has reduced hardware replacement times.
Performance monitoring metrices have been configured to proactively trigger alerts of different types - email alerts, SMS alerts, Slack messages. This helps with preventing issues from occuring.
Dashboards for various teams have helped with monitoring the right components. The flexibility to include charts, graphs is very useful.
Comprehensive reports of different types availability, utilization, status etc have been able to address all audit and compliance needs.
Creation of users with different roles and responsibilities make it easier to ensure that only the desired users have the rights to view components allocated to them.
NetPath has also helped with identifying bandwidth and latency issues with Service Providers - both Internet as well as Intranet (MPLS leased circuits)
Device Views give a nice visual depiction of the node under monitoring and hence eases the strain of going through logs and other data.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider the whole stack of Network Modules on the SolarWinds Orion platform rather than NPM as a standalone product. The other modules are real value adds to help you on the journey to Monitor, Manage and Analyze.
NPM & VNQM for Monitoring
NCM & IPAM for Managing
NTA for Analysis
Addons like UDT help with troubleshooting.

The Network monitoring can then be enhanced to include Servers, Applications, Storage, Virtual & Cloud.

NOC Perspective

  • March 17, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Dashboards integrated easily and SolarWinds played nicely with Splunk.
What do you dislike about the product?
There were definitely some quirks where servers would be up but would seemingly fail to check in on a regular basis. We never got a solution for the issue and often times support tickets would be closed for no reason and the support cycle would have to start all over again.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were looking to solve issues with the current setup we used in Splunk to monitor the health of servers and applications. SolarWinds integrated reasonably well and allowed the NOC to start identifying issues before we started getting calls.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The product works great and for the most part - solves the problems most orgs are getting it for. The dark side is when you do run into issues, you will find the lack of support disturbing. Spiceworks solved more issues than the actual support did.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor Review

  • January 22, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Good alerts - instead of hearing about the network device which is down, we get alerts from the SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor and we can quickly attend to it and also let our clients know well in time.
We get alerts when are upgrades available.
Reporting capabilities which we like and allow us to check historic data.
Real-time monitoring.
Great User Interface
What do you dislike about the product?
Email alerts don't work as expected after an upgrade.
Not all devices are supported.
Improvements can be made to make it easier to troubleshoot the software if they are faults with the software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It makes it easy to pick network faults as they happen and makes a network engineer's life easy and we can easily have visibility of our network.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is a great tool to have in your organization and it makes it easier for those managing the network to have visibility.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Solarwinds netflow traffic analyser provides accurate information about the traffic and utilisation of respective LAN or WAN node
What do you dislike about the product?
There should be improvement in the time it takes to load data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is useful for Critical links in the network whose traffic need to be analysed if the utilisation goes above threshold bandwidth.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Yes go for it as it is useful tool.

Excellent tool, cash efficient (@ 2ys+), my favorite in the suite. (Certified user of several years)

What do you like best about the product?
Templates from thwack, app scanner, ability to go as deep as you have time for.
What do you dislike about the product?
Custom script monitors have requirements which should be documented in-ui. Maybe even a query builder. Storing or recalling tables requires a lot of work. API monitor should be here rather in in the NPM UI in my opinion (or offered up as an option)

Unknown statuses are a common headache, albeit one with fixes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've built dozens-to-hundreds of templates at this point for enterprise vmware, sql, oracle etc applications. The first and most impactful layer of checks can be done pretty easily! Being able to launch into SQL or Powershell opens up everything else neatly too. Many issues have been fixed, troubleshot, or prevented entirely across my current and previous company, as well as a number of our clients.

Good value for the comparative low product cost.

  • October 27, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The data captured is good and the cost of the product is comparatively lower than other Tools that provide the same amount of data.
What do you dislike about the product?
Need to make a lot of changes manually. Automation would help the product a lot. They
could improve to include more application templates.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have monitored different types of applications using Solarwinds SAM. We get automated alerts so that a lot of issues can be avoided.

Best NPM tool on Market

  • October 19, 2020
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I want to start with an assertive sentence. There are very few things we can't do with Solarwinds NPM. Because he is very flexible and the knowledge in his forums is great. We created incredible data with the data in NPM. You can monitor your network devices, firewalls, access points, in short, all your devices that can be monitored with snmp, if they have IOD support, to the finest detail. You can create a custom dashboard and reports with the collected data. Here you really are the limit.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are many graphical representations in NPM. Some of these are lines, gauge, pie cart, etc. You cannot use some chart types for some data types. I think it consumes a lot of system resources. High capacity ram and processing power are required. Other than that, I haven't seen too many minuses. You can buy with peace of mind. A module that will not let you down.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Solarwinds NPM is a tool that allows you to apply good reports by providing very high detail and correlation with these details. After we bought SolarWinds npm, we met our needs in this direction. For example, with NPM, we can report how many times a month and how long a company works on a backup data line. In this way, we prove to them how beneficial a backup data line investment is
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Solarwinds is a good enough tool for NPM network monitoring. It is worth the money you pay. If you need advanced monitoring, you can look at other alternatives if you need a simple monitoring infrastructure.

Best montiong tool for on-premise setup

  • September 19, 2020
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Alert configurations and easy setup of nodes threshold settings. AD integration for access and role setup for users.
What do you dislike about the product?
Customized reporting and API configurations are not so vast for enabling quickly. Also, few node alerts which was configured for ticket logging in a differt tool are getting missed out when auto resolve option is ebavled
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Large infrastructure monitoring for server and network
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go for it if you need best alerting for even small glitches and alert explanation are good with knowledge articles attached to each. Easy configurations setup

SolarWinds review

  • September 08, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This is only one of many software that SolarWinds offers for network management. It is easy to use and support to diagnose and troubleshoot. Alerts can be easily automated to report problems, even after hours. The graphical interface is also nice.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is more expensive than other instruments, but it is worth it, because in the long run SolarWinds will be cheaper.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows me to monitor the network devices in our offices
Recommendations to others considering the product:
A simple interface that can be used by beginners and experts alike. I like the way it presents the capabilities of the network.
