Struggled with spam control and have faced persistent gaps in data protection and support
What is our primary use case?
I no longer deal with Barracuda Email Protection. We only deal with the firewall, specifically Barracuda Firewall, as the product was changed to another solution.
I stopped working with Barracuda WAF and Barracuda Email Protection last year.
With Barracuda Email Protection, the features I find most valuable are spam filtering, as it is primarily used for spam protection. The antivirus component uses an antivirus solution, though I am uncertain which specific antivirus they are using.
The customers who used Barracuda Email Protection were from the finance and banking sectors.

The link protection feature has impacted my customers positively. I believe they have link protection functionality.
Regarding the data protection features in Barracuda, I am not certain which are the most beneficial.
What needs improvement?
I am uncertain if Barracuda has DLP (Data Leak Protection). They do not have DLP, I believe. The product is very basic in that regard. When we compete with FortiGate, they have DMARC capabilities. Barracuda Email Protection did not have DMARC, I think. They also didn't have DKIM. You must depend on server DKIM functionality or something similar.
In assessing Barracuda Email Protection's ability to prevent accidental data leaks, they didn't have data leak protection. I believe they lacked data leak protection capabilities. This is why my customer changed to another competitor, and we lost the project.
I think Barracuda Email Protection could improve in the future to make it more competitive by addressing the fact that Barracuda started with anti-spam and email protection, but now they are moving more to cloud-based solutions rather than device-based or hardware-based solutions. Most of the new features are for the cloud, and they work with Google and Outlook Exchange Online.
I consider it problematic that they are moving completely to the cloud. I think they should maintain something on-premise as well.
For the features I would prefer to see, DKIM is a priority. I have already protested for three years about why they cannot implement DKIM functionality.
I believe all features available in the cloud must also be available in the on-premise solution. Why would you put more features in the cloud but not in the on-premise version? The problem is their server is not in Indonesia. Their server is in the United States. In our country, you must store the data within Indonesia. This is the problem. I cannot sell your product if it is only available in other countries. This is why I cannot sell the cloud-based Barracuda Email Protection in Indonesia due to data residency requirements.

I worked with Barracuda Email Protection for approximately four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Customers chose a different product after experiencing a problem when they upgraded the firmware, which caused the system to restart multiple times during working hours.
They changed to Fortinet because of the instability caused by the firmware upgrade. I discussed this issue with Barracuda, but they only patched the problem repeatedly without solving it. After six months, they identified the issue and recommended upgrading the memory configuration, which solved the problem. I was frustrated with Barracuda because resolving something of this nature took six months. After four years of working with this customer, I lost the project because of this incident, which seemed like a preventable error.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
When it comes to functionalities and stability, Barracuda Email Protection is still a good solution. However, regarding scalability, you must change the product box if you want to increase scalability. I am referring to the on-premise hardware version, not the virtual version. If you are using the virtual version, scalability is acceptable because you simply change your subscription and gain scalability. However, with the hardware product, you must change the box. Barracuda does not limit you based on how many mailboxes or users you have, which is one of the good things for Barracuda. This is concerning the box performance. With other products, you must depend on the number of mailboxes and users involved in the protection.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate the technical support from Barracuda as three out of ten. The technical support is poor. For email security specifically, the support is inadequate. For other products such as WAF and network solutions, the support is acceptable. However, for email, the support is insufficient. You need six months to solve a problem. Every one to two months, the email system restarts. This is particularly problematic for a financial institution and banking customer.

The initial setup for Barracuda Email Protection is straightforward because we had been working with this customer for years already. We never had a problem with the initial setup. Everything, when troubleshooting occurred, was handled appropriately. However, during the last year, I felt the support from Barracuda was unsatisfactory.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I think the costs of Barracuda Email Protection are acceptable because I am selling another software license for anti-spam, and I have no problem with that product.

I also have partnerships with Fortinet and other solutions such as MDaemon.

What is our primary use case?
Barracuda Email Protection is an essential addition to our email security suite, and we use it ourselves and for other clients at present. It is simply the best anti-spam gateway I have used, better than Trend and Mimecast and other products I used in the distant past. As a front-end gateway with a well-thought-out user interface, it is easy to see messages from external clients that were either caught up in anti-spam or antivirus queues and explain to end-users what happened to their email.
I use Barracuda Email Protection with our clients as an excellent anti-spam gateway with the best logging display of messages I have seen. It is so easy to identify what happened to messages, which is so important when I am the person they call when things go wrong and messages are not received. It takes seconds to set up and minutes to configure. It is very easy to use for both my clients and myself.
The email spam filtering is very great, email encryption, and email archiving are all features that we support for our clients as part of our network security services packages.
How has it helped my organization?
Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted my organization by increasing our email protection and security significantly. Our security has increased from forty percent to sixty-five percent, especially when dealing with all the threats that come through emails. It has been a great tool because we can handle email delays and delays on file scanning. It has helped us have less time chasing bad emails. The fast implementation of encrypted mail keeps employees working with less interruption since they are happy, satisfied, and secure. When our partners are happy, we are very happy.
What is most valuable?
The best features Barracuda Email Protection offers include good spam filtering and very good sandboxing of all links, as well as good encryption. It also has integrated logging for user management of their own spam. It has better filtering technology, so few are false positives as well, with excellent anti-spam engines and logging. It is extremely easy to install, configure, and set up, and there is excellent message tracking for folks that say they have not received an email they were expecting.
Integrated logging and user management make my daily work easier because it is very easy to log in and to manage this tool, hence making it a very good tool for email protection. It also has excellent, easy-to-add designated users as site administrators, and it is competitively priced.

The speed of the portal is quite slow, and the quarantine reports are scheduled-based and not on the spot itself.

The customer support is very good, and the times that I have reached out to the support team, I noticed they are very responsive. They are quick to find a solution, and they are available twenty-four seven, so overall, it is a great customer support team.

What other advice do I have?
My advice to others looking into using Barracuda Email Protection is that we are using Barracuda Essentials across the organization to protect users from malicious email attacks and to secure data in the cloud backups. It solves issues in one solution: backup, protection, and reporting. All data is backed up to the cloud, including Office 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive for all users. It protects the user inbox with a myriad of content filtering and black and whitelisting. It is simple for the IT department and other departments to find quarantined emails and release them. It has increased my organization's security posture, especially when dealing with threats from emails, making it a very recommendable tool that is cost-effective and easy to use.
Our users feel more comfortable since they receive a lot less spam and phishing emails, and they love how easy it is to send encrypted emails. Barracuda Email Protection is very easy to use since it really does not take any effort from the user other than clicking one button to send outgoing encrypted emails when needed. Management is also very easy, and there is not much to do other than add or remove email addresses and add or remove domains from the spam filtering list. Overall, it is a great tool. I would rate this review an eight.

Robust Email Security with Easy Setup
What do you like best about the product?
I like that the mail logs are easy to review and the search capability works well, allowing me to search on various items such as the to address, from address, subject, and even email content. The search capabilities make it easy to track possible malicious emails, grab similar ones, and take action, such as deleting them from everyone's inbox. Setup was extremely easy, and we managed to do much of the work without additional help by using the online support knowledge base from Barracuda. We haven't regretted the move to Barracuda Email Protection since it made sense to integrate it into the same system as Barracuda Cloud-to-Cloud backup.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes going to 'Incident Response' the search there finds nothing, even though I am searching for the same email. This search has improved recently though.

I use Barracuda Email Protection to ensure email encryption, prevent Business Email Compromise and Impersonation, and block spam and phishing emails. It protects our inbound and outbound emails effectively.

What do you like best about the product?
I like how easy it is to use the platform as its very intuitive to use, The customer support has been fantastic. It has a lot of features built in and is easy to integrate into other domains. It was easy to implement already and allows for you to copy settings from other solutions to get setup. We use this daily.

At time s the platform can be a bit slow in my opinion but other than that no security issues.
