What legacy ActiveDirectory should have grown into

  • October 22, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
IAM controls for Windows, Mac, Linux that extend to multiple cloud platforms. The ability to onboard/offboard with 100% certainty that the basic access/controls are defined properly helps us to focus on more business driven automation and less time dealing with the minutia. This gives us the ability to have a windows style identity management solution for Windows, Mac, Linux... and that extends out to SSO, RADIUS (used with VPN and WIFI connectivity), without all of the headaches of maintaining legacy Active Directory domain controllers/sites and services. Bonus is the Mobile Device Management (MDM) and the lack of required VPN. Machines don't fall off of the domain (users don't have to maintain a VPN connection back to an authentication method (Domain Controller) so we don't have to worry about dealing with VPNs and stuck sessions). The ONLY advantage that Azure Intune has over JC at this point is Autopilot. If they could combine that with a remote desktop viewing application, MSPs could start looking at dumping their RMM tools.
What do you dislike about the product?
MSPs might find this difficult to resell. Because the rates are posted and the service is not white-labeled, it can be hard to profit. This also plays into losing revenue from maintaining systems that this type of automation would replace. If an MSP looses the revenue from maintaining systems (servers, workstations, etc), they're less likely to offer this as a solution. This combination will make it hard for MSPs to stay in business even though they're supposed to be acting as first-level support for the clients. The benefit to clients with MSPs that would re-sell this is that the MSP can focus on driving business analytics and automation beyond basic infrastructure authentication. JC has also come out with its own MFA app that handles similarly to DUO. There isn't any push for users to move to this as a push notification method instead of entering in the 6 digit OTP. The last negative is that they have come out with some excellent solutions, but the documentation hasn't quite kept up. There is a massive lack of videos that explain features and how to implement them (or lacking updates that have made solutions easier). I've found, however, that their support/people have been absolutely amazing. You couldn't ask for a happier, knowledgeable team. If they can keep this momentum up, they'll undoubtedly be eating Microsoft's lunch in no time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have a client who builds software for clients. They use a mix of Windows, Mac, and Linux (RedHat and Ubuntu based). They wanted a means of controlling access to all of these devices even on a basic username/password/logging level. We've expanded that process so that when they onboard a new engineer, HR puts them into Bamboo HR, it feeds to JC for user identity and based on the department they belong to; they've given access to the appropriate resources in the cloud for development. When that engineer leaves, the access to those resources are removed without having to access each resource type. I can't overstate how awesome this is to be able to offer a company as small as they are with under 100 users. Best part is that I don't have to constantly monitor it, allowing me to drive other automation solutions for them.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're not already waist-deep into the Azure AD/O365 platform, I wholeheartedly recommend implementing JumpCloud. Self-service password reset, OS-level MFA, uniform experience for end-users across windows, mac, and Linux, all huge reasons to get into this. SSO and RADIUS in the cloud are just icing on the cake. Recently setup a small business with a local Synology (CAD files didn't like working over a WAN connection), and we were able to automate the drive mapping and user credentials to it. (similar to legacy ActiveDirectory with on-prem DomainController, File server, CAS licensing, etc).

The ONLY negative feedback I would give, is:
1. User/device groups are not able to dynamically add members based on criteria. (I believe it's on the roadmap). This is important so that I can setup the org as needed (for software assignments, security policy exceptions, scripting purposes, etc) without having to manually remember to add users/computers to groups (not that it's difficult for smaller orgs). But instead of building out a list of groups to add a new device or user to, I can simply document which user/device group based on role.

But being that you no longer have to worry about computers falling off of the domain (Trust broken to do lack of connectivity with a Domain Controller), this administrative work is EASILY offset by having to check a few boxes in the JumpCloud Console
