PortalGuard works well and is simple to manage.
What do you like best about the product?
It's a simple solution that does what we need it to do. It's not overly complex or involved, and it just works.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the management is done with applications on the server, it would be nice if those tasks could be done in the web interface.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Portalguard simplified and improved our user's ability to manage their own passwords. After rolling it out for that, we started using it for SSO with MFA as well.
Fantastic service

The QR codes work well for our younger students.
What do you like best about the product?
QR codes are helpful for our younger students.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't have any issues with Portalguard right now.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
QR codes which make it easier for teachers working with younger students on Chromebooks.
PortalGuard does what we want. We needed a way to login to AD prior to Google for Chromebooks.
What do you like best about the product?
Lanyard Login, and logging into AD vs Google first.
What do you dislike about the product?
We seem to be their R&D department. We have been a test bed for the last three years.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Login into AD prior to Google for Chromebooks
Portalguard is a great value
What do you like best about the product?
Simplicity on the front end for users. I like the new features in 6.5.x that allow users to customize their experience more.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is a bit complex to configure on the back end. MFA is also somewhat complex to configure if you have a diverse user base. There are almost too many options. Also, the helpdesk feature needs to be a bit more customizable or simplified with respect to helping users with MFA issues. Resetting all values blows out items that are not MFA related and causes us more issues. An option to reset MFA elements only would be helpful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Portalguard provides us with a one-stop location for all identity and login situations. It is flexible enough to fit most every situation we run into.
Stress free authentication
What do you like best about the product?
PortalGuard works like a champ! I've been using it for about five years without any complaints. The login screen works perfectly with LastPass, and the load time and authentication are fast and accurate. I see no errors on login. The user experience is seamless and we no longer receive complaints from users as we did with our home-grown system.
What do you dislike about the product?
No downsides at all - this has been a great experience all around.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our previous authentication system was home-grown, and as our user base expanded, we saw problems with timeouts, overloaded systems, and other issues that required users to clear their cache in order to continue. That has not happened since we switched to PortalGuard, and the users have not complained in years! It's been a great upgrade over our last approach.
Works Pretty Well
What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility for any type of SP setup. CAS, Forms-based, SAML.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface is not great for configuration and you cant consume metadata from SPs to help speed configuration.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Enforcing password requirements, SSO implemtation. Low cost.
Portalguard is good but not with everything
What do you like best about the product?
PortalGuard is the most cost effective solution we found
What do you dislike about the product?
doesn't work with some of our systems, like JAMF
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use portalguard for MFA. It works well for the most part
PG Administrator
What do you like best about the product?
We like the Customer Service and Customizability
What do you dislike about the product?
It's not running on Unix, but that is not so important anymore.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Single Sign-on and Multifactor. The previous product was unreliable.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The best, most versatile product we were able to find. Great service, performance and reliability. On-Prem and Cloud solutions are available to meet our business workflows and security requirements.
Basic, but good, product
What do you like best about the product?
The software does what it says it will. PortalGuard has a lot of the features you can find in more premium products. Setup is easy, and you can make changes on the fly (as needed). Their support is reactive and local.
What do you dislike about the product?
If you want to change the layout or web UI, you either need to know their code or to setup a service call. There is not a way to do it within the UI itself. If you want to create custom reports, you have to manually edit XML files.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
PortalGuard is our primary SSO solution. We've recently pushed out Multi-Factor Authentication to our users, with great success.
