Includes full ANOVA and multiple ANOVA capabilities but limited graphical capabilities

  • June 01, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is most valuable?

One feature I found very valuable was the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Also, when it comes to result presentation, being able to present your results in graphs is important. Additionally, when discussing hypotheses and calculating probabilities, it's helpful to make a note of any significant differences in your tests. This information can improve your business processes for that team.

The same goes for full ANOVA and multiple ANOVA. Those are the features that I found very useful, especially when it comes to presenting demographic information.

What needs improvement?

I feel that when it comes to conducting multiple analyses, there could be more detailed information provided. Currently, the software gives a summary and an overview, but it would be beneficial to have specific details for each product or variable. For example, if we're comparing different flavors of ice cream like strawberry, milk, and chocolate, instead of just providing comparisons, they could offer a more detailed analysis for each flavor.

Additionally, in terms of graphical presentation, there is room for more innovation. It would be great if the software could provide more creative and visually appealing options, similar to tools like Tableau. Instead of just simple black and white bar or line charts, there could be more options to enhance the visual representation of data.

Overall, these improvements would allow for more in-depth business process reengineering and enhance the overall user experience.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SPSS since September last year. So, it's been a couple of months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of performance, if we compare it to other business solutions, it's fair. On its own, the performance is not bad. It's easy to analyze and understand. I would rate the performance at around seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, I would rate it around eight out of ten. It provides a good capacity because it directs you to the main points you need to focus on without having to search around. The functionality is capable, and it helps in business development and making informed decisions.

During my master's degree, everyone in the business intelligence department used SPSS Statistics, and also in my previous work, it was mainly the technical business analyst team and probably around ten people in the strategy department. So, it's between five and ten users in my experience.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was not hard. It's not hard to install the solution. By following the installation instructions, you can easily install it on your system. I would rate it an eight, where ten is the easiest. The whole deployment process took around 40 minutes.

In my experience with SPSS, I have worked with both straightforward and complex setups. The complexity depends on the analysis you're conducting.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Another solution we used for business intelligence is the Arena tool. However, I find it quite different from IBM SPSS Statistics. It's more like running a model, listing and analyzing the data, especially when it comes to statistics or features from different sources.

What other advice do I have?

My advice would be to be open-minded and have critical thinking skills. One thing with SPSS is that the analysis itself is easy to use by following instructions and manuals. But once you have the results, you should be able to think outside the program and critically analyze what needs to be done to improve business processes. It's not just about using the tool; it's about understanding how to interpret and apply the results to your organization. So, I would advise anyone using IBM SPSS to be open-minded and think expansively about how to apply the insights gained from the analysis.

Overall, I would rate the solution a six out of ten. The reason for giving it a six is because I feel like it provides a general overview of what is happening and where to look. However, if you want to go into the details and access the actual root cause of the bottleneck, you would need some additional products.

So, I believe that in order to obtain more comprehensive results, it depends on the type of issues you are dealing with. Some issues may require the general knowledge that IBM SPSS provides to help you solve the problem, while sometimes, it may require additional tools for in-depth analysis. But because it establishes a foundation for analyzing business processes, it does have some basic importance. So, I'm giving it a six overall.

What do you like best about the product?
It has the largest variety of statistical tests and ability to customize tests and post-hoc analyses of any stand-alone software I've used. It also runs on computers with less processing power than is required for some other data analysis/visualization software.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI and output screens are ugly and not very user-friendly. Drop-down categories for types of tests are not always easy to navigate, and the program can be overwhelming. There are so many screens for options for any type of test, but what the options change isn't clear if you aren't already very familiar with that analysis. I wish there was a better help function or description you could mouse over to understand the options. Additionally, visualization of data is not very attractive especially for publication, so I have to create figures in a different program.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It solves the problem of lack of knowledge of how to run more complicated tests such as Principal Components Analysis in other programs. Additionally, my supervisors are not familiar with other programs, so it is helpful in meetings to do work through SPSS so they understand the formatting.

SPSS: The Leader in its Field

  • May 12, 2023

What do you like best about the product?
There are three elements that I would like to highlight about SPSS. First, its easy-to-use interface has a practical design that is very similar to other more well-known programs. Second, the wide variety of functions and statistical calculations that can be performed, from descriptive statistics to multivariate techniques, and finally, the customization of statistical analyses that allows for a wide range of processes.
What do you dislike about the product?
At the university, we have found that some students' computers cannot run SPSS properly due to its hardware requirements. I cannot think of another disadvantage except for its learning curve, which can be somewhat complicated for those inexperienced in handling this type of software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SPSS is a program used for various purposes in the university, but mainly for Administration and Engineering courses. It is also used by researchers who need to conduct specialized statistical analyses. It helps analyze data from surveys conducted with students and faculty to make decisions on the institution's various administrative and academic aspects.

What do you like best about the product?
It is very user friendly. If there is any confusion, there are plenty of YouTube videos that go step by step with visuals that can guide users to a solution. It is more user friendly than its competitors, especially for those unfamiliar with statistical software packages.
What do you dislike about the product?
When using SPSS for large datasets, with long lists of variables, there is no way to do a keyword search. While it's possible to put the variables in alphabetical order, sometimes the variable names are not what you'd expect (for example, in pre-existing datasets like the GSS).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It can very quickly run numbers that are part of a large dataset. Also, with just a few clicks, you can get statistical significance and Cramer's V that will allow you to calculate variance, which is an important accompaniment to the statistical significance of a p-value.

It is the most used for a reason. Practical, easy to use, and there is a ton of work already created to make your tasks easier.
Competitors are nowhere near the easiness of use of SPSS
What do you dislike about the product?
Integrations could be improved.
Also, programming tasks could be more efficient. That way it could be possible to automatize certain process.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Does all the statistical analysis in the company!

What do you like best about the product?
SPSS can upload data files quickly and effectively
Provides a broad set of statistical tools
Can perform highly complex data analysis with accuracy
It is very useful for conducting research
Provides a graphical presentation of data analysis
What do you dislike about the product?
Expensive for students if they want to purchase it for their research/experiments
I don't know if I dislike it because it fulfills all my requirements
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am a professor at the university and doing research work in the area of Business Management. I prefer SPSS because it can do highly complex data manipulation and analysis with simple instructions that I provide it. Furthermore, it can collect data from almost any type of file and use them to generate reports, charts and plots distributions and trends. It is equally beneficial for both qualitative and quantitative data. Studies show that almost 85% of research scholars carry quantitative data for further analysis. Even if there are several software available in the market to analyze quantitative data, I prefer SPS to other softwares.

SPSS, reasonable but costly and better alternatives available

  • November 28, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It has a very shallow learning curve, both for students to learn and academic staff members to be able to teach. Its basic point-and-click interface makes it easy to navigate for beginners and those unfamiliar with coding or statistics software. This is also beneficial as it makes it easier to focus on learning the statistical principles if students may be anxious about learning statistical concepts and a programming language.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a seemingly yearly update that does not seem to add or fix much content yet still charges the university exorbitant fees to use and update. There are numerous issues, some of which have still yet to be addressed despite numerous updates and versions. Chiefly among these is the use of the 'Bonferroni post-hoc' correction. This is fundamentally incorrect as this procedure is only meant to be used for analyses that are apriori and conflicts directly with statistics education, which as a result, confuses students greatly. This is a serious issue as this often ends up in published scientific papers as well - the 'Bonferroni post-hoc' correction.

Moreover, the high price of the software makes it extremely cost-prohibitive for students, meaning that they are unable to access it at home to practice unless they pay an exorbitantly high fee. Thus, creating inequality between students. This is compounded as there are now various other statistical packages that are free and superior to SPSS in their functionality, such as R, JASP and JAMOVI.

The built-in data visualization is very poor; we always have to turn to other software to create figures, such as GraphPad by Prism.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows for various statistical analyses to be carried out to analyze data attained from experiments. Moreover, it is used to teach undergraduate students the basics of using statistical software. It is relatively easy to use and prepare. However, the skills acquired are quite limited and not very generalizable to other, more commonly used statistical packages.
