IBM SPSS
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to merge large files. Useful also as a learning tool. Good for data manipulations. You can generate graphs and multiple tables in order to create more understandable information. Able to perform both basic and advanced statistical tasks.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface is very basic and easy to navigate, but it could be updated to have a more modern feel. It could be more intuitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've used SPSS to sort through some large data sets collected over multiple years, to try to analyze trends in the area of use of public space.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Recommended for groups attempting to analyze large and complex data sets.
Using SPSS Statistics
What do you like best about the product?
Decent data analysis package, pretty user friendly.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is sometimes hard to interpret results. Also, modifying and pulling the generated graphics from the results is a bit hard and sometimes frustrating.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mostly research question. Trying to decide if various experimental results are statistically significant. This program is a relatively quick way to crunch a bunch of data and see if the results that were found in an experiment are going to be usable at all. It is also an easy package to teach beginner analysts off of.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is a good product for conducting basic statistical analyses.
Using SPSS - easy for beginnings
What do you like best about the product?
The menu driven versus code driven is very easy for beginners
What do you dislike about the product?
N/A - I only stopped using SPSS because it was no longer supported at my company. This is what I learned on.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Public policy research and analysis.
User friendly, easy to learn
What do you like best about the product?
The point and click interface of SPSS makes it much more accessible to a broader audience. For someone who is experienced with statistics, It doesn't require the as much training as other programs like SAS and R. Even someone with basic stats knowledge could easily pick up SPSS
What do you dislike about the product?
There seem to be some statistical limitations to SPSS. For instance, I work with nationally representative datasets, and it seems that it's not as easy to perform analyses on data that includes weights.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SPSS allows me to quickly and easily perform statistical analyses.
Great data analysis software
What do you like best about the product?
I like the ability to write your own syntax and save it. I also like the ability to save outputs.
What do you dislike about the product?
SPSS 20 for Mac has been very buggy in the past. Such that if you had one SPSS file open (any type), you could not double click another SPSS file within the finder window and have it open. It would give an error and refuse to open. Any additional files had to be opened from the open window within SPSS. This was pretty annoying, but it still functioned. Had all of our tech people look at it and it seems to have been a pretty widespread problem for all mac users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is very easy to collaborate by sending syntax back and forth between partners. It also allows us to analyze our data quickly and easily for publication/dissemination.
powerful tool for data analysis
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use, drop down menus are easy to navigate for those with limited experience with SPSS
What do you dislike about the product?
It is expensive for a non-profit like ours, therefore we cannot use it on a wider scale with our collaborators. We have opted for working with an open source version
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring and evaluation of our global programs
Recommendations to others considering the product:
if you have the resources to acquire it is a good product. The upfront cost is high but the annual license is reasonable for a single user
Great analysis tool for broad range of users
What do you like best about the product?
SPSS is great at doing many different kinds of analyses for a range of scientific data. It's versatile and can be applied in almost any research context.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is challenging to share data files with others who do not have SPSS installed. Since it is not free, it makes open-data sharing a bit more challenging. There are workarounds, of course (e.g. saving it as a .csv file) before sending to a collaborator. But streamlining this would facilitate greater transparency in science.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In my work, I analyze data from several experimental groups. SPSS is wonderful at handling multi-level modeling and repeated-measures designs.
SPSS Stats for graduate level psychology
What do you like best about the product?
I really like that you can use the user interface to generate a script and then modify it as you see fit. The user interface is useful for quick analyses as well and makes showing other people how to use it easy. I also like that you can generate graphs in the output after running analyses.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't know if SPSS is going to be usable for some of the more advanced statistics I'll need to do in the next few years involved nested data. It is sometimes difficult to manipulate data in SPSS so typically I will do this ahead of time in excel.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm not exactly solving business problems, but I am analyzing data from studies that help inform my research. SPSS has a lot of benefits in terms of what I can use it for in my research.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Its a pretty user friendly statistics package that many people are familiar with and there are tons of online resources (youtube and such) because it is so widely used.
A good way to start in statistics
What do you like best about the product?
I like the simpleness of the software. For me, it was an excellent way to begin my statistical analysis. And if you are more interested in the software itself you can go more complex and even programming on it. That´s great!
What do you dislike about the product?
the interface is to simple and you need to pay for the licence
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mainly as part of the analysis for my research
Recommendations to others considering the product:

It helps get jobs done that are too difficult to program in Excel
What do you dislike about the product?
The license fees are high for a single user
