What do you like best about the product?
Very easy to use for basic to intermediate statistics.
What do you dislike about the product?
Visualisations require improvement especially graphs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Life science research.

Good software

  • January 18, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We can do all kinds of statistical analysis but the best feature is the user interface.
What do you dislike about the product?
This software is not very good for panel data analysis. Other than that this has all the good features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am looking at the impact of internationalization and firm performance. It is good for hierarchical regression analysis.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is a very good software for people who are beginning multivariate analysis. It has a very good user interface and does most of the statistical tests.

Useful but far too expensive

  • January 18, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Familiarity. SPSS benefits from being the standard stats software used in academia. I've been using it since undergrad so I feel very familiar with it. It allows me to do things using a graphic interface that are not possible without a high degree of coding ability in R.
What do you dislike about the product?
For a small business, purchasing licenses for multiple employees is cost prohibitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SPSS gives us the ability to show other members of our organization where insights are statistically relevant.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
See if you can use cheap or free solutions to accomplish your objectives.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
i like the point click and copy paste functions for running analyses
What do you dislike about the product?
there needs to be more crosstalk between spss and other word functions like excel
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
were running a lot of analyses and that has been made easy with the copy paste feature for syntax

    Hospital & Health Care

perfect for public health

  • January 17, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ease of importing your data and re-coding; finding steps on how to accomplish you data goals is very easy to google/look up online
What do you dislike about the product?
The price is pretty high and it does take some learning in the beginning to understand the steps to get what you want.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Demographic information and trends over time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
for those of you in a university setting, consider purchasing licenses that can be used via an online platform, so that all students do not need to purchase.

SPSS is user friendly software to analyze data

  • January 14, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's user-friendly. Output is easy clear, concise, and easy to interpret. The tables are easy to read, you can generate different forms of graphs, it's easy to generate new variables and easily address research hypotheses.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not as flexible as software like R. It doesn't work well when you try to copy and paste data from excel into SPSS. It only provides syntax if you hit "paste" rather than all the time. I think it would be helpful if it always produced syntax. Also, it would be nice if you could save the output file, the syntax file, and the dataset all under one combined file of some sort or automatically save in the same folder or something like that.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm analyzing data and SPSS has helped to efficiently analyze data.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Watch videos online when confused or lost.

SPSS is a useful software package to easily conduct advanced and simple statistics easily.

  • January 13, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
IBM enables me to conduct statistical tests with an interface rather than computer programming.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface is not entirely intuitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am trying to figure out the most cost-effective methods of delivering services to our customers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be ready to spend time familiarizing yourself with using the software, even if you are knowledgeable about statistics.

Useful only if your work requires it

  • January 12, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I learned this software for resume purposes -- since some workplaces require it, I figured it would be a good skill to have. The most I can say about it is that it is relatively easy to learn if you're already fluent in other statistics software.
What do you dislike about the product?
Honestly, I find this software less attractive and less intuitive that similar point-and-click statistics software such as Stata, and obviously it's less powerful and flexible than something like R. My personal opinion would be to use Stata if you want something easy-to-use/shallow learning curve, and use R if you want something more powerful. I don't think SPSS is a top choice for either purpose.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Main benefit would just be if you are required to use it by your employer or to coordinate with others. I use it at work only if a coworker/coauthor requires it, or occasionally to open software files in SPSS format and convert them to CSV or DTA formats.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would check out Stata first -- it's very similar but honestly I think more intuitive and easy to use. Both are paid products. R is also a good alternative if you want something free (more flexible, but definitely more challenging to learn).

Getting harder to justify the expense given the quality of open source alternatives

  • January 11, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that SPSS is an accessible statistical tool for young researchers that don't come from a strong data science or computer science background. By providing a graphical user interface and prepackaged tests users can take more time working through their understanding of conceptual and theoretical considerations. Compared to other solutions it saves young researchers from having to go out and find the most state of the art tools to test statistical assumptions or run statistical analyses.
What do you dislike about the product?
SPSS is expensive and the skill sets users learn while using it are relatively non-transferable. Things are moving so quickly in research that it doesn't seem like SPSS will be able to keep up for long without at least partially outsourcing or crowd sourcing development. The texts I study that used SPSS two or three editions ago now use Excel with Add-Ins (which are now developed by outside contributors) or R with GUI support and statistical packages.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Primarily I have focused on research examining whether job satisfaction is influenced by the match between an employee's personality and the culture of their workplace. SPSS has some statistical tools that make this type of analysis possible; however, ultimately I switched to R because it allowed me greater flexibility and control over the type of analysis I wanted to run. I did use SPSS to teach a coworker how to run a secondary analysis to check the results I obtained using R.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need great documentation, want to save time not having to search for extensions, need to quickly teach people statistical procedures without a computer science background, and have the resources to afford it, then why not?
