What do you like best about the product?
I've been using veeam for the last 3 years and it works very well. Works with physical tape, aws, azure, local disk, qnap, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
their licensing structure and pricing can be a bit expensive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it to backup all our virtual machines in vsphere as well as backing up our physical sql server. We back it up to local disk, then to tape, and then to aws all in a few jobs. Very automated and i dont have to touch it once its setup properly.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The customer service (from sales to support) is amazing and the process of actual backup and restore. The product is also feature rich and easy to impliment/integrate inside the organization (from servers to workstations). Anotehr nice thing is that I can set my own frequency and time of backups. I am not limited to a pre-configured platform.
What do you dislike about the product?
The initial learning curve is a but much, but workable once you get into it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This is solving a few of our issues: 1. We get to backup onprem and in the cloud. 2. We have the ability to restore accidentally detleted files. 3. It is perfect for disaster recovery - it allows us to do so much with our data. 4. Veeam also allows us to backup our servers, VM's and Execuative machines.

What do you like best about the product?
When it comes to backup for diverse environments including VmWare and Hyper-V systems, the Veeam Data Platform is outstanding. It provides reliable restore functions for critical file retrievals, crucial for SQL database management and Microsoft Exchange. The integration of the platform across different systems is intuitive, providing an all-architecture backup solution that does not discriminate. In this dynamic IT scenario, the transition of backups from one environment to another is crucial. It is one of the features that I have come to rely on heavily in the product’s resilience in restoring files and systems almost to their last byte.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Veeam Data Platform is expensive, and can be a huge financial burden for some budgets. Professional support often justifies its cost, though it may be tedious, needing more than a phone call or a simple email to resolve intricate issues.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Data loss risks are mitigated through dependable backups and quick restorations addressed by the Veeam Data Platform. The process involves a very robust restore process in place, which was normally a nightmare, but now is a smooth operation. This reliability is not just comfort-based; it is game changing for business continuity and downtime minimization, which is immensely valuable in project delivery.

A stable and scalable data management with seamless integration across diverse environments

  • November 06, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

A diverse range of customers use it for more than just virtualization. The platform is utilized for backup and Data Loss Prevention solutions. This extends beyond virtual environments to encompass mixed environments, including physical workloads. Some of our customers use it for cloud backup, showcasing its versatility across various IT infrastructures.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable addition recently introduced is the Continuous Data Protection feature. Particularly noteworthy is its configuration for SMAX and SaaS recovery. The integration of CDP with VMware stands out as one of the most impressive features. In the context of recoverability, whether dealing with issues related to data traffic or encountering problems with physical or virtual servers, Veeam stands out for its swift recovery capabilities. The ability to bring services back online within minutes, be it for physical or virtual machines, is highly beneficial.

What needs improvement?

There might be room for improvement at the plugin level, specifically concerning application plugins. In a recent deployment, we encountered some issues, and I believe there is a need for enhancements in the plugins for SAP and Oracle. It would be beneficial to see an extension of support to Oracle VMs. This is particularly relevant for customers utilizing Oracle VMs, where currently, we resort to agent-based backup solutions, and having an agent-less backup option for various hypervisors would be a valuable addition.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with it for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate its stability capabilities eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is not a concern as it exhibits high scalability without issues. Currently, about twenty-five to thirty active customers use it.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support, particularly from the region where the connection is established, may be somewhat lacking. While it was previously considered a highly effective support team, there has been a noticeable decline in support quality since last year, leading to increased challenges and issues. I would rate it five out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. I would rate it nine out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment process is straightforward and depends on the organization's requirements. For a basic setup, such as backing up the hypervisor and VMs, it can be completed in approximately four hours. However, for more comprehensive configurations involving agents, RDR, and extensive testing, the process may extend to three to four days. In an on-premise virtual machine environment, the deployment involves setting up a backup management server as a VM, with additional roles assigned to backup proxy servers (VMs) and a repository server, often a physical server linked to local or external storage. Linux repositories are configured for immutability, or appliances like Accelerate or BMC data domain can be used, eliminating the need for a physical repository server. For the database, deployment options include PostgreSQL or dedicated SQL, determined by the deployment scale. Networking requirements, specifying open ports between components and VMware/Hyper-V infrastructure, are communicated to the networking team. Following the environment setup, the backup configuration is executed, incorporating three-to-one copy recommendations with secondary copies on-site, at a different site, or off-site. The configured setup undergoes testing for recovery processes, including instant recovery, file-level recovery, and application-level recovery. Results are documented and shared with the customer, concluding the deployment process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is affordable. I would rate it two out of ten. Since it's not an appliance, infrastructure elements such as backup storage and resource calculations for the required number of VMs need to be factored in, leading to additional pricing considerations.

What other advice do I have?

For those implementing the data platform, my advice is to adhere to best practices diligently. Following the documented guidelines is crucial, as issues related to infrastructure connectivity or delayed restoration often stem from deviations in implementation. Overall, I would rate it eight out of ten.

Proactively monitors and helps in resolving issues efficiently but needs more customization features for dashboard

  • November 06, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our customers use it to monitor their backup infrastructure as well as the hypervisor.

What is most valuable?

Most of the customers like the features that monitor the VMware infrastructure.

Moreover, the product proactively identifies potential issues and provides suggestions on how to address them.

What needs improvement?

In future releases, I would like to see more automation capabilities. It could integrate with automation services to automatically resolve identified issues rather than simply providing instructions to the user.

Moreover, I would like to see customization on the dashboard and the reporting level.

Another area of improvement is the support.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for around eight years. I'm working with Veeam ONE and Veeam Data Platform.

We work with the latest version, v12.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten. It needs some improvement, especially on database connectivity, when the database grows. So, these issues are there for some of our customers.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten. It needs some improvements.

We have around 15 customers using this solution. Some are enterprises, some are government entities, and some are SMBs.

How are customer service and support?

Generally, what we have noticed with Veeam support is that it's getting worse. We have to resolve this by ourselves, and it happened recently also with two to three cases. Our engineering team was able to resolve this instead of waiting from their side.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

I would rate my experience with the initial setup a nine out of ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy.

It was straightforward. No complexity here.

What about the implementation team?

The installation is pretty straightforward, and some configurations need to be done. The entire process can be done within a day; we can complete it.

For the deployment process, we need to identify where to place the solution and the required ports for Veeam ONE. We identify the network requirements, all the ports, and firewall ports needed to connect to the VMware and backup infrastructures.

It's placed on a dedicated machine, and we configure a skilled server instead of SQL Xpress due to limitations. Then, we deploy it, add the backup and VMware infrastructures, set up the license, and configure rules and alerts.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is reasonably very cheap. I would rate the licensing model a one out of ten, where one is very affordable and ten is extremely expensive.

There are no additional costs. Most of our customers take it as a bundle with Data Cloud. From advanced, they take the bundle. So it comes with Veeam ONE. So, it's very affordable.

What other advice do I have?

If it's purely a VMware environment, then I definitely recommend it. If it's a heterogeneous environment, they may not be able to monitor on-premise servers or the cloud. So, if it's purely VMware, then I would recommend it.

Overall, I would rate the solution a seven out of ten.

The solution provides flexible licensing options and good technical support, but it must improve its scalability and performance

  • October 17, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for backup and replication of data. We can create a backup copy of off-site data.

What is most valuable?

The backup feature is valuable. It uses snapshot-based replications. Continuous Data Protection is a game-changing technology. Including Veeam, there are only three software vendors that provide this technology.

What needs improvement?

The product must improve its performance. Sometimes, the backup is very slow. It might be because of the backup infrastructure or the network infrastructure. Sometimes, it is because of Veeam’s abilities.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than ten years. I have been using the latest version for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool’s stability depends on the people who maintain the platform. If they do not manage it well, the stability will be lower. The more we manage, the more stability we get. If we take care of our platform daily, there won't be any problems. If we don't look at it for a week, we will have some problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam has some performance issues after we reach a couple of 1,000 virtual servers. We have more than ten customers using the product.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not straightforward. It depends on the customer’s infrastructure, architecture, CDP, and storage. We must be very careful about which tools should be used for the implementation. Infrastructure assessment should be done very carefully. A person must be a good Veeam engineer to decide which tools and add-ons should be in place to deploy the solution.

The customer infrastructure assessment should be done. We must find how many virtual servers will be backed up, how many client machines will be backed up, and how many physical servers will be backed up. If a replication solution is in place, we should ask for a wider bandwidth for the customer.

If the customer will be using CDP technology, then we have to do some additional installations on the customer's physical servers. We must understand how many proxies, backup repositories, and immutable repositories we will use.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution provides flexible licensing options. We can have it perpetually. We can have it yearly or once in three years. We can also get the Veeam Universal License.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is the only IT vendor that provides many features in one bundle. I recommend the tool to others. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.
