Incredibly powerful and intuitively convenient

  • March 12, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love that a majority of the features in Altium are designed for hardware developer convenience to help make work more efficient and less of a headache fighitng the tool. One of my favorite features would probably be the 3D viewer. It helps a ton when designing and fitting boards into enclosures designed by my teams mechanical engineers.
What do you dislike about the product?
The main pain point I have found with Altium is figuring out issues with missing library metadata. For example, if I copy a footprint and schematic symbol from an existing library into a new library, there are weird linking issues when trying to bring those parts into the PCB layout. It's most likely user error but I have not found the errors to be too helpful in solving the problem.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Altium Designer is allowing me to create, easily, a new version of an existing embedded module that our company has been using for a long time. The ease of use of the PCB library and SCH library, plus the ability to work with multiple schematic documents makes everything way easier. All of the automatic features in Altium help me save time working with the software and spend more time analyzing and designing my circuit.

The Go-To Electronics Design Package

  • March 12, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium Designer is the most complete and versatile electronics design software out there - I've used several different packages in my career, and Altium is the easiest to use, most intuitive, and produces the best results.
What do you dislike about the product?
A tiny niggle with Altium is that the licencing screen can sometimes be confused - for example if the software has previously crashed (doesn't happen often, but all software does sometimes), you're unable to use it again for a while because the license is still locked to the previous (crashed) session. There's workarounds though.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Designing innovative PCBs, and allowing creative freedom of electronic design. Closing the loop betweem PCB design and mechanical integration by allowing inport/export of 3D bodies for MCAD collaboration.

    Medical Devices

A full featured professional PCB design software

  • March 12, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Integration of schematic capture and layout tools, multiboard integration, many components available online, sourcing tools and BOM creation.
What do you dislike about the product?
Complexity can be daunting when first learning to use the software, particularly when attempting to setup design rules.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In my organization, I am responsible for all phases of PCB design, from block diagramming, to schematic capture, to layout, simulation, fabrication and testing. Altium provides tools to accomplish all of these discrete stages in a single integrated package.

    Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing

Altium has been very intuitive and easy to use, but it does have a fair share of issues.

  • March 11, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Libraries; the library creation, usage, and overall design flow is very intuitive and easy to understand. Each part has a long list of things you can add to help specify and detail how that part behaves.
What do you dislike about the product?
Pricing. Overall pricing on Altium is very high, and as a former hobbyist, it kind of hurts knowing how much it costs to use, with either how little the competition costs, or how unintuitive the alternatives are.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
PCB design and schematic capture in one program, that easy integrates and benefits from one another.

    Information Services

Quality ECAD cluttered by unnecessary red tape and bloated addons.

What do you like best about the product?
MFG part search is wonderful. The PCB and SCH editors are great and have awesome native tools.
What do you dislike about the product?
The amount of half baked features. Drafftsman is way to slow to be useful. Simulator is near useless. Harness design is way too complicated to convice me to not use something like rapid harness.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Quick PCB design due to its great schematic editor and PCB editor software suite. BOMcontrol is very nice as well.

Good CAD software for beginners

What do you like best about the product?
It's a user-friendly and easy-to-use version control system.
Component management is much easier with integrated tools. I also like the new constraint manager.
Project release is also becoming more professional
What do you dislike about the product?
MCAD co-designer somehow does not work well and I had problems with licences (sometimes it shows no licence available even if there are unused licences)-But the customer service in Germany is very nice
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Better simulation.
Sometimes offering better prices for start-ups like us may be helpful.
I also found when using component management in Altium 365 there were some difficulties in assigning the comment of the component which shows in the schematic document

PCB Designer - Altium Designer User for 6+ Years

  • March 07, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium Designer has many automated tools and features as well as group editing features which make the design workflow quicker and easier.
What do you dislike about the product?
Altium Designers library management is slow and very manual even compared with open source tools like KiCAD, some tooling to better manage components which reuse standard footprints would be a big improvement.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Altium Designer solves the problem of design and review of schematic, PCB design, and CAM

The tool is very inclusive in all aspects of the pcb design process.

What do you like best about the product?
Full bom support. 3D support, easy exchange between Altium and Solidworks. Great viewing support with 365
What do you dislike about the product?
Some pop up windows lock the program forcing you to close the said window before moving on to other parts of the program.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
bi-directional mcad exchange. Saves countless hours exchanging cad between ecad and mcad without starting a new design with each revision of the pcb.

Altium has been a game changer for myself and those on my team.

  • March 06, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium designer is great largely due to the integrated nature of all it's subsystems. From core features you'd exepect in any Electronic CAD package worth its salt. Like schematic capture, PCB drafting or BOM management, to the extended features that are often neglected like component database management tools or documenation drafting features. Personally, the Altium365 component database has been a game changer for myself and those on my design team. With the integrated data driven parameters of the Altium365 component database, its streamlined many tasks that used to be rather tedious and time consuming. Implementing and maintaining a component database can be a lot of work, but with Altium it doesn't have to be the worst part of the EDA process. I use these features often and can't see myself going backwards to not having them as tools again. As well, if there are any stumbling blocks, the customer support is quick to respond, should you need the help.
What do you dislike about the product?
Largely, the price. Given, there's not much that can be done and it's really the cost of these things, but it would be nice to see Altium release cheaper package options, even if they were of limited feature sets. Not every team member needs the fully feature Altium package. Sometimes for certain roles you really only need one or two features for a given license, in a given role at the company.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Obviously, PCB design is our core need, but Altium also helps solve several surrounding tasks that are overlooked in the design process. Namely, that's component database management, project documentation, and project document sharing. The Altium365 platform helps with the component side fo things for parts we design in-house, as well as the larger open Altium provided component database. The draftsman toolsuite has been helpful with the project data driven elements, so I can document the project and have it update automatically on project export. This can be a significant part of your time if you're doing it manually. Finally, sharing those documents on the same Altium365 web platform has been very helpful. Being able to setup a access portal where my co-workers can see the design as the files are checked in has been a real boon. This works really nicely with work handoff between the PCB designers and the programmers on a given team.
