What do you like best about the product?
- DRC Online
- 3D Quick View
- impedance control
- libraries parameters

- import/export data
- cloud 360
- all in one
What do you dislike about the product?
- bugs, bugs, bugs and program crashing, the same as far as I remember from Protel 98... ;P
- UI of schematic drowing could be much better - look into Eagle
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Cooperate with other R&D department like mechanical staff
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Calculate possibilities to cost which is very high especially in maintenance.

Altium Designer - Unbiased Review from a Defense Industry Professional

  • December 17, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The user interface is gorgeous. One can clearly see that work has been done to give it a modern look compared to the competition.
Altium seems easier to learn to use compared to the competition. Personally, I find Altium easier to use than even the popular Kicad, which is free to use.
Altium Vault (component library management) is great. Draftsman is also great.
What do you dislike about the product?
Altium feels like it sits on legacy code as it is plagued by constant bugs that seem never to end. The most common one in my experience is when the software tries to write or find an object in a memory location that does not exist anymore and that crashes the software.
Additionally, the fact that every piece of helpful capability is tied to a license. Like PDN Analyzer. The simulation capabilities are just not on par with PADs professional.
Altium does not have live impedance calculation as PADs does. For RF designs, I have to rely on different software (calculator or simulator) to calculate line impedances and then use them within Altium. For some reason, the Altium impedance calculator is not very trusted
Altium does not seem to include the propagation delay within the device (to the die) in its calculation, which some competitors do. Altium is great but lags behind PADs in some aspects
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am designing RF Military products. Needless to say that a premium software is needed for such. Altium offers just enough for me to design great circuit boards, and that is about that. I cannot do more than that

Full featured

What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that you can do essentially everything you might want to do in your electronics design. Rigid/Flex no problem, via stitching is easy for thermal or shielding, no problem.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not too fond that Altium designer can be buggy at times and that it seems something in the UI /UX seems to change a little with every update leaving you hunting for a function that used to know where is lived but has inexplicitly been moved, removed, or has a different name.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I occasionally work on cards that have multiple duplicate circuits, and I like being able to easily duplicate them in the schematic and place them in their individual rooms on the PCB.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Altium Designer is a very good EDA tool. Take some training courses because parts of it are not as intuitive as you would expect, But everything you need is there.

Does a good job with many options but has a few non-intuitive quirks

  • December 16, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
There are options to control just about any behavior of Altium. For example, if the jump to zoom is too close, there's an option to change the amount of zoom. Also, the validation of a schematic can be as in-depth as you want it to be and you can easily jump from the error listing to the point in the schematic where the error is. Altium is fully integrated with schematic entry, layout and even simulation all without jumping into a new application.
What do you dislike about the product?
Many of the tasks and options are non-intuitive. You'll have to learn what they call things, which is not intuitive. There are some quirks in Altium. For example, if you copy of portion of a schematic from one sheet to another (or even another project), the pasted circuit will not align to the grid and if you subsequently tell that portion of the circuit to align, parts and wired will move in different directions, forcing you to do some rewiring. The use of outjob files is fairly confusing, again due to the way they name things.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Previously, we had been using OrCAD which was awkward in moving from schematic to layout. Moving from schematic to layout in Altium is easy and quick. But you have to remember to validate first, otherwise some weird stuff can happen. Now, with Altium, we can do our own layouts (Make sure you set the error options correctly!) and even generate fab drawings easily.

Fast Easy Design PCB

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The most valuable feature is the built-in MPS to search parts and shortcut simulation model effects.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no schematic signal line page indicator the same as ALERGO.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy und quick to drawing a PCB layout drop to the factory, at same time it has a easy simulation funkion to verify circuit.

What do you like best about the product?
Integrated tools to manage BOM. The stability of the Schematic tools and the advanced settings on the PCB Layout as well as cloud services.
What do you dislike about the product?
The price is a bit high compared to other options
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dealing with the lack of ICs during the Corona Chip Crisis

Altium Designer enables us to do complex design work while keeping up productivity

  • December 16, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use and wealth of design entry options support us even in complex designs.
What do you dislike about the product?
Performance in large and complex designs can sometimes be an issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We do a lot of designs with a lot of recurring elements - Altium helps us leverage modularization and design re-use.

Generally good, but can be better...

What do you like best about the product?
3D viewer and RF tools are the best. The integration between schematic and layout is good. I also like stack up manager and the import and export functionality..
What do you dislike about the product?
I always think the layout tools can be improved. I often use graphic tools like Inkscape, CorelDraw, and I often wished if Altium could provide some functionality seen in that graphic software. After all, they are all 2D graphic software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mostly RF design. It is quite easy to transfer designs from Ansys package to Atium. The best benefit I see is the inter compatibility with other software.........

Such a timesaver!

What do you like best about the product?
Generating PCB manufacturer files was always a long and tedious process with our old CAD software. But now that we migrated to Altium Designer, it's literally a one-click process. BOM, Gerbers and 3D STEP files are easily generated which reduces the mistakes we have made in the past.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI can sometimes be a bit laggy, but this is a minor issue and doesn't occur often. The software is also a challenge to learn, but that is simply a result from the rich feature set that Altium offers.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have streamlined our PCB component library, which mean we make less mistakes by a regular auditing process. We also save a lot of time in generating production files for manufacturers.

After 40 years using CAD (and red tape) Altium is the best.

What do you like best about the product?
Everything integrated into one synchronised database
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not too keen on the blurry splash screen
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With our Altium 365 workspace we don't need Mordac to maintain a server for us.
Engineering, procurement and production all see the same synchronised component database. (No Library Wars!)
Part Choices shows us which components are abundant and which are rarer than hen's teeth.
Our Sub-contractors can work on our designs using our components and we can see their progress.
Our Suppliers can download manufacturing data directly from our Altium 365 workspace.
Reviewers can add comments into both schematics and layout which are immediately available to the designers.
Version control records Who did What, When, and most importantly, Why.
Designs and components can be viewed by other departments using a web browser without having to purchase extra licenses.
Production can use the 3D view to help check component fitment and orientation.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try it.
