Altium Designer is a great PCB tool

  • August 14, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium Designer is easy to use and has great features. I really like the 3D view and the ability to make STEP files of the PCB to send the mechanical engineers. I also like that schematics and layout are so integrated.

I have done many 2, 4 and 6 layer boards with Altium Designer version 17 and 18 during the past 2-3 years.

Altium Designer works great on a laptop PC and doesn't need a powerful desktop PC in order to run. I use a laptop PC with integrated graphics and it works great.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some software bugs that need to be sorted out in version 17 at least. Sometimes when working on a big design the software hangs and a restart is needed.

The printing of placement drawings and some other documents should improve. The editing of the print layout is hard to use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Altium Designer has improved my work of making PCBs. The workflow is simple and I appreciate the 3D support. I send 3D files of my boards to the mechanical engineers and vice versa.

It is easy to setup a new board design and to follow through until finished design.
The tool has all the DRC checks one can expect including impedance checks.

I prefer Altium Designer over other competitive CAD products I have used over the last 20 years as an electronics engineer.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Download the trial version before buy.

Great and powerfull tool

  • August 14, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Lots of footprint library, easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
In some cases there was a problem with some footprint
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
For every PCB board that I designed, I always use Altium. Very easy to use, very easy to export file to print design on real board

Best PCB tool out there

  • August 13, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is easy to use and integrates 3D features with the layout diminishing the number of mistakes.
What do you dislike about the product?
It used to have a lot of bugs but after 18 it has improved significantly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been able to design very complicated multi-board systems without having to go through several iterations
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you get the advanced training, you'll be good for many years of design

Best PCB Design Software Ever

  • August 13, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium is simply awesome. It is the most powerful software for PCB design. I like the capability of doing variants from the schematic and the PCB. The Vault Library and manufacturer part search integration that cut off the developing time. Also the 3D panel is very helpful and the ability to import/ export 3d files to modify the board shape
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the DRC takes too long to finish the report
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Schematic/PCB design for different projects. User-friendly interface. Powerful software
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is a must have for Hardware Design

Altium Designer - schematics, layout and 3D-view

  • August 12, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium Designer makes it easy to create schematics and transfer them into a descent layout.
Making the correct library figures (for both schematic and layout) and attaching a 3D file is very straightforward.
The 3D view is very handy to get a first view on possible mechanical integration issues.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lot's of shortcuts do not follow the 'standard' windows implementation. Working with Altium Designer would be even easier if they would...
Although it is not very difficult to start working with Altium designer, it would be great to have some youtube introduction course available to get you through the basics, the standard workflow (read: most efficient workflow) and some of the specific but very interesting features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Altium Designer makes it easy to bring schematic and / or library figure updates to the layout. It is not too difficult to learn to work with Altium Designer as the tool works quite intuitive.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do not fear that Altium Designer is difficult to start with. The tool is quite intuitive to work with.

It is easy to use, lots of resources available online

  • August 11, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
There are a lot of online resources available to learn the basics of Altium Designer. It is easy and fun to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is expensive to buy for students who want to make their own projects. There should be a cheap student version to develop the community. There should be more component design for schematics.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Designed a custom PCB for a testing product. It is very easy to learn for beginners. There are many youtube videos which help with Altium. I also like the keyboard shortcuts available for users.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make full use of online resources

Good, but lacking in documentation

  • August 11, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The auto-router saved me a ton of time without looking terrible, the component design parts and the 3d view really helped my prototyping process. The ability to share component libraries was also extremely useful for all the different engineers at my company.
What do you dislike about the product?
As someone who had to work in this software without peers around me to help educate and guide me, I had to learn on my own. That meant having to google a lot of questions about minor errors, and the built-in Help system was rarely helpful in these instances. I had problems importing certain files but could never understand why or what was missing from them, and there was no docuentation I could look towards for assistance.
Also, the cost of the software is extremely prohibitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Component and PCB design! The 3D view helps me visualize how the component will look in real life, which can be a lifesaver since my company uses STEP models for all of our products. Since it's the industry standard, most people are familiar with it and it looks good on a resume.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
- consider how prohibitive the cost can be
- having expertise on hand can be a life saver in terms of getting people up to speed

Interface

  • August 10, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The interface is user friendly. There are a lot of features that helps the designer to work on the PCB project flawlessly. The feature of generating 3D models and directly export them into SolidWorks files.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dont like that the program is taking too much of the computer memory. You need a computer with high enough performance characteristics to be able to operate without lagging with the program. The integrated libraries need to have more components and also the packages that needs to be bought for generating Gerber files. Mentor graphics has all features of exporting the design for production, Altium does not.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Working on PCB/EMA design at company where i work.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't look it, get it. Your organization will be able to increase productivity with this software.

Very powerful...if you know how to use it

  • August 09, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium is a powerful tool for creating and exporting PCB designs, with a very clear and customisable layout
What do you dislike about the product?
Altium does feel like it was put together by quite a few programmers, and can sometimes interact poorly with itself
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Altium is the only software I have used to design PCBs in over 7 years of circuit design

Complex Useful yet Overpriced

  • August 09, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Altium does almost everything you can imagine when it comes to PCB design and layout. They have parts management, schematic, layout, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
The pricing structure is prohibitive to small entities and is subscription based. They may offer discounts but it is still very costly to first purchase the software and then continue to hold a license seat every year. They don't offer small business pricing. When you pay for Altium you get access to everything and it would have been nice to have a more bare bones license available to use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
R&D is not slowed down by using Altium because it is an efficient software. If I don't know how to use a part of the software I can look up the solution or find a workaround within the software.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be patient when first using Altium as there is a steep learning curve, but there is a lot of support out there.
