We are still working with Barracuda Email Protection. The requirement for Barracuda Email Protection is to ensure security over all emails that come into the office, so it protects us from all malicious code, phishing, and ransomware attacks. It saves us from all of them, and it also tells us if there is a vulnerability in any user.

Email protection has prevented ransomware and phishing and keeps our organization’s data safe
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The functions in Barracuda Email Protection that I find the most valuable are the way it is reported and the way the solution is given for a threat if it has found one. The way it has protected malicious mails from being delivered makes a huge impact.
Threat Protection is a feature we use, which only gives us an advanced warning or an alert on any kind of malicious code coming in as an email.
Link Protection for email security is very important and very useful. We do use Link Protection extensively.
We do use Barracuda Data Protection functions, and the advantage we have is that the backed up data is protected from any possible attack that can come or any kind of hijack or data being misused. The Data Protection feature helps us ensure that the data is safe.
Barracuda Email Protection helps us prevent accidental data leaks because it gives Link Protection, so you don't click a link by oversight or mistake thinking it is genuine. This ensures that your chances of being vulnerable are gone, and the data used for protection is also safe, so we don't see any kind of data leak coming through this.
The main benefits Barracuda Email Protection provides for us are saving time and money because we don't run into any kind of attack or disruption in the mail service that we may face, including ransomware attacks. That is definitely important for us; the workflow is there but it is not that critical at this point. However, it is important to be protected and save money.
What needs improvement?
In my opinion, Barracuda Email Protection can improve by possibly adding more features towards zero trust capabilities or towards ensuring that the data protected is more secure, such as a vault. Additionally, the retrieval feature through Outlook, which is the email client that we use most, can be improved.
For the purpose for which we use it, I see no lack of function in Barracuda Email Protection. The wishlist can always be there to enhance it, but from what it is meant to do, it is fairly up-to-date and modern.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Barracuda Email Protection for about six to seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
For stability, I would rate Barracuda Email Protection almost a nine.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I would also rate the scalability of Barracuda Email Protection as a nine.
How are customer service and support?
We have not had too many technical issues, but I would rate technical support as an eight. They can still improve.
How was the initial setup?
The setup process for Barracuda Email Protection is quite simple. We did the setup ourselves; our team installed it.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did compare Barracuda Email Protection with other products, specifically Check Point Harmony. We chose Barracuda Email Protection over Harmony because we found Barracuda Email Protection's strike rate on identifying detection was much higher. Second, we found Barracuda Email Protection's pricing to be far more comparable and reasonable than Harmony. Additionally, I found the speed of Harmony was not as good as Barracuda Email Protection.
What other advice do I have?
I would give Barracuda Email Protection a final mark of about nine. We strongly recommend users to go with Barracuda Email Protection.
Improved email security has reduced spam, simplified encrypted mail, and strengthened user trust
What is our primary use case?
Barracuda Email Protection is an essential addition to our email security suite, and we use it ourselves and for other clients at present. It is simply the best anti-spam gateway I have used, better than Trend and Mimecast and other products I used in the distant past. As a front-end gateway with a well-thought-out user interface, it is easy to see messages from external clients that were either caught up in anti-spam or antivirus queues and explain to end-users what happened to their email.
I use Barracuda Email Protection with our clients as an excellent anti-spam gateway with the best logging display of messages I have seen. It is so easy to identify what happened to messages, which is so important when I am the person they call when things go wrong and messages are not received. It takes seconds to set up and minutes to configure. It is very easy to use for both my clients and myself.
The email spam filtering is very great, email encryption, and email archiving are all features that we support for our clients as part of our network security services packages.
How has it helped my organization?
Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted my organization by increasing our email protection and security significantly. Our security has increased from forty percent to sixty-five percent, especially when dealing with all the threats that come through emails. It has been a great tool because we can handle email delays and delays on file scanning. It has helped us have less time chasing bad emails. The fast implementation of encrypted mail keeps employees working with less interruption since they are happy, satisfied, and secure. When our partners are happy, we are very happy.
What is most valuable?
The best features Barracuda Email Protection offers include good spam filtering and very good sandboxing of all links, as well as good encryption. It also has integrated logging for user management of their own spam. It has better filtering technology, so few are false positives as well, with excellent anti-spam engines and logging. It is extremely easy to install, configure, and set up, and there is excellent message tracking for folks that say they have not received an email they were expecting.
Integrated logging and user management make my daily work easier because it is very easy to log in and to manage this tool, hence making it a very good tool for email protection. It also has excellent, easy-to-add designated users as site administrators, and it is competitively priced.
It has a user-friendly portal, strong cloud-based features, and no additional maintenance cost, along with responsive support. Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted my organization by handling encryption better than any other tool I have used before, which has increased our email protection significantly. Our security has also increased from forty percent to sixty-five percent, especially when dealing with all the threats that come through emails. It has been a great tool because we can handle email delays and delays on file scanning. When our partners are happy, we are very happy, and it has helped us have less time chasing bad emails. The fast implementation of encrypted mail keeps employees working with less interruption since they are happy, satisfied, and secure.
What needs improvement?
Barracuda Email Protection can be improved by enhancing the reporting feature.
The speed of the portal is quite slow, and the quarantine reports are scheduled-based and not on the spot itself.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Barracuda Email Protection for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Barracuda Email Protection is very stable, as I have not experienced any lagging or downtime.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Barracuda Email Protection's scalability is very good because it handles all my clients' emails and all my organization emails. It can be used by any size of organization, hence being more scalable.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support is very good, and the times that I have reached out to the support team, I noticed they are very responsive. They are quick to find a solution, and they are available twenty-four seven, so overall, it is a great customer support team.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I previously used Microsoft Advanced Threat Analytics.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment because I have saved the end-user heartache, especially since they are very secure and have peace of mind. The IT department has saved time and cost, as they do not have to run up and down fighting with malicious spam or malicious attacks. They are at peace.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
In my experience, the pricing, setup cost, and licensing for Barracuda Email Protection are competitively priced, making it very affordable for any size of organization, so it is a very cost-effective tool.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing Barracuda Email Protection, I evaluated other options, including Bitwarden.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others looking into using Barracuda Email Protection is that we are using Barracuda Essentials across the organization to protect users from malicious email attacks and to secure data in the cloud backups. It solves issues in one solution: backup, protection, and reporting. All data is backed up to the cloud, including Office 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive for all users. It protects the user inbox with a myriad of content filtering and black and whitelisting. It is simple for the IT department and other departments to find quarantined emails and release them. It has increased my organization's security posture, especially when dealing with threats from emails, making it a very recommendable tool that is cost-effective and easy to use.
Our users feel more comfortable since they receive a lot less spam and phishing emails, and they love how easy it is to send encrypted emails. Barracuda Email Protection is very easy to use since it really does not take any effort from the user other than clicking one button to send outgoing encrypted emails when needed. Management is also very easy, and there is not much to do other than add or remove email addresses and add or remove domains from the spam filtering list. Overall, it is a great tool. I would rate this review an eight.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Very good threat protection, spam filtering, and cloud backups
What is our primary use case?
Threat protection, spam filtering, and cloud backup solutions are essential for me.
What is most valuable?
The most helpful aspect for me is the out-of-the-box configuration, which is fairly good. It allows me to build my own custom rules and assists with DMARC, focusing on email security and domain reputation.
Additionally, it has stopped people from frequently asking me about blocked emails, allowing them to release emails from quarantine themselves. This feature saves me time by preventing external threats effectively.
What needs improvement?
Considering it integrates with Azure, I would like to be able to effectively set up policies where people are by default included in certain settings. For instance, for email quarantine, I can't set up a global setting. Users must go through an induction session where I guide them in configuring quarantine alerts rather than having default settings based on group membership. This seems like an oversight since they already use Active Directory details. They should assign policies based on group membership, which configures these settings by default.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used the solution for about five years now.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't had to use customer service much, however, when I have, it has been pretty good. They are responsive, meet their SLAs, and provide answers quickly. I had a problem with our cloud backup where it wasn't restoring a team properly. They went through the process and recommended a change in their platform to address the issue. They also gave me a workaround that worked perfectly, demonstrating their efficiency all the way up to the third line.
How was the initial setup?
It took me a day to set it up. I don't often set up new mail spam filters and relays. Nonetheless, it was fairly painless. I've since set up another domain, which was even easier, indicating there is maturation since the original setup.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Five years ago, I considered this, and Barracuda offered an educational price point with significant discounts for education. It provides good value. They also offer a range of training options, including setting up phishing scams for educational purposes.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate the solution nine out of ten. Nothing can be a ten since nothing's perfect.
Useful tool for users and admins too
Barracuda Impersonation Protection
Our Experience using Barracuda Impersonation Protection for Higher Ed
Since implementing IP, the overwhelming majority of these spoofs get caught and the end user never sees them, other than an email notifaction that Barracuda had intercepted a rouge email.
We were having many of those get delivered before Barracuda, and even some users interacting with those emails.
But we are seeing very little of those get delivered now that we have implemented Barracuda IP.
Works very well and good protection
Trusted product
Generally Good
- It removes the emails from user inboxes after identifying them as fraudulent.
- Also, with "Impersonation Protection" in mind, I want to note that it has in times past allowed fraudulent emails through which displayed our president's name, but was from a gmail address or other email domain that was not our own. I would have expected it to do better than that given that it should be able to see the names of people in our company and compare those to emails that pretend to be from people of the same name. I will say that this specific issue has not presented itself particularly recently, so it may have improved over time.
- It does miss some emails that I really feel it ought to be capable of remediating. Things like some fake docusign emails or emails with "attachments" that are really just a picture of an attached file in the email. I think some of these are just using images to get around spam filtering which is an old and well-known technique in my mind.
- I also tend to feel like some of the emails that it blocks should be getting filtered out by the "regular" Barracuda filtering and shouldn't need to be remediated by the Impersonation Protection service specifically. I can't be objective about it however. I just think some of the scam emails for example, should be detectable by the regualr spam filtering.
- The process for reporting missed emails is fine, but I feel like those should be going to an email address that reflects the current product name, rather than the old "Sentinel" name.
- I feel like there ought to be logs available which would show every email that Impersonation Protection has reviewed. I can only see which ones have been remediated.
- It seems like many of the emails that get categorized as "impersonation" are really just spam, scam, or general phishing; not impersonation specifically.
