A very reliable, easy to use and secure CDR Solution with a snappy UI and outstanding support

What do you like best about the product?
The outstanding support. Being in the IT business for over 20 years I have experienced support from various companies. Votiro's support team was one of the best I have experienced so far. They are very responsive and have qualified engineers which stick with you until the problem is solved. They have direct access to developers if necessary.

Other things I really liked about Votiros CDR Solution (Content disarming and reconstruction)
- they are very innovative, when I first saw their technology I was immediately hooked and purchased their solution for 100 users. Seeing their progress from an installing on windows machines to their final solution - linux based virtual appliances, was a joy to follow. I made quite some improvement suggestions and while one or two were implemented in the next release (this was in the very beginning) others were implemented later on. I didn't hear for 3 years, and then all of a sudden I got an email stating that what I suggested 3 years ago, will now be implemented in the next release. What a nice surprise, that my improvement tickets don't land in some archive folder, but are in reality monitored and valued. They also added support for more and more file types over time.

- I really love the fact that once its running, you basically have nothing to do, it just runs. Just watch out that the disk space doesn't fill up and that the license does not expire. The support team happily issued a temporary license until I had sorted out the renewal with the sales team.

- It's just another MTA, so you just direct mails to it

- I like the UI to configure the policy/ruleset. Once you understand it, you can configure almost any scenario you like!

- With upgrades - you just created a ticket with them and they do everything for you
- They respond very fast - normally on the same day, sometimes within the hour
- If you have any questions you just create a ticket and they always help you
- If a user wants an original file you can just release the original email to him, directly from the snappy Web interface. However I would suggest that you test the attachment in a protected VM with no connectivity to your normal network.
What do you dislike about the product?
Upgrades can take some hours if something does not go smooth. You have to plan a downtime, just in case something goes wrong. Or in our case we have an MTA before Votiro and just direct it to the next up (implementing more tighter rules in the meantime). If something goes wrong, Votiro will stick with you until they have fixed it.
I loved the feature in the old version where there was a report about how many infections where prevented through Votiro. They actually save all the suspicious files and continuously scan them with newer AV signatures, and once the AV catches up, then a report gets generated, that Votiro CDR Engine held back a file which was then days later on, detected as a virus. They said that they would be implementing this feature in a future version. This is extremely helpful for us in the IT department to show this report to our management regarding the usefulness of Votiro.

I hope to use Votiro in the future to scan and deliver web downloads as well (instead of only email attachments). Currently they only support bigger more complex solutions like Menlo and Symantec Fireglass I think. A simple solution for a small business would be great. They announced that they are looking into this.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were looking for a solution to remove active content from documents, so that we could still deliver email attachments to our users, instead of blocking or stripping them completely. This was 100% possible with Votiro. The solution simply removes all active content from all file types, such as javascript from PDF Files, Macros from office documents, etc etc. This helps a lot because we get a lot less calls to our help desk. Our users can even received passwort protected attachments (office documents, ZIP files etc) because they get an email with a Link to the Votiro interface where they have to type in the attachment password, Votiro then scans the file, removes active content and delivers the file to the user!! Magic !!! :)

This is in my opinion the best and only way to protect against zero day exploits - to remove the active, executable code in attachments!
