Collected mentions of government official for building media reports
What do you like best about the product?
The automatic collection of mentions on all sorts of media allowed us to easily build media reports daily for our PR records and flag any bad press right away.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes we would get irrelevant mentions in the reports.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allowed us to build media reports more efficiently than having to sift through Google manually for mentions.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great way to speed up and automate your media monitoring operations.
Mediocre product
What do you like best about the product?
Publications which can be attracted are nice. Different sources are easy to add. Easy to use interface so easy to get started with, I learned it in about 2 days.
What do you dislike about the product?
UI very poor and visually unattractive, definitely not up to 2019 standards. Boolean cannot be overwritten.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Data collection for further analysis
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Not really advise on this product, quite mediocre for what it does.
Run far away.
What do you like best about the product?
If you're looking for very BASIC PR reporting/monitoring, this tool may be for you.
What do you dislike about the product?
Where do I begin...data coming into the platform is often times not accurate, or missing entirely. Even top-tier media placements. Customer Service/Account Management is lacking -- don't expect anyone there to help you with getting things set up, aside from the customer support.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
None. In fact, it creates more work for me as their platform is extremely limited and they miss metrics/placements entirely.
Basic service | Deceptive membership renewal practices
What do you like best about the product?
The interface is easy to use and easy to learn. There were no issues rolling this out to multiple users in our firm for basic searches and tracking media mentions of the firm and our projects.
What do you dislike about the product?
Overall when compared to using simple Google alerts for topics and media related to my firm, Meltwater was outperformed by the free service. When we let Meltwater know that we were interested in cancelling because of this performance issue, they deceptively asked that we wait to cancel, implying that our renewal date was several months away. In fact, in was much closer and we passed the deadline to opt out of renewal. This renewal policy was not published anywhere that was easy to find but rather, is buried in a page on the internet, reachable by a link deep in our contract in fine print. We missed the official cancellation date because we were issued a final invoice the day after that deadline - when I challenged the invoice explaining it should have been clear we were cancelling our service, the response was that we hadn't stated that clearly in writing before the 60 day window in advance of our renewal date. In fact, my challenge was on day 59 before our “cancellation date” but this fell on deaf ears. The 60-day window was another detail intentionally withheld when we called and emailed several times to complain about the service and express out intent to cancel. After weeks of "negotiation" we were threatened with legal action if we didn't compromise and spend an additional $2000 (as opposed to the $8000 they wanted us to pay for the year) to extend our contract partially through the end of the year.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I inherited this system when I joined a firm. I was aware of Meltwater and had never previously found a need for its services which seemed less effective than my experience using a PR person or team, Google alerts and/or reaching out on my own to find publication opportunities. This was confirmed over the past several months.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do not consider this service. Beyond their shady membership and renewal process, they are poor communicators, practiced sales people thinking of their bottom line, and unreasonable in fielding dissatisfaction from customers. You can search the web for hundreds more stories from customers who feel duped and/or dissatisfied with performance.
easier than some legacy tools
What do you like best about the product?
I like that it is very customizable and it does make a nice, easy report you can export with minimal effort
What do you dislike about the product?
This is a problem in every tool I have ever used, but you always end up deleting a ton of irrelevant mentions manually.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
easier tracking of mentions and easy reporting out to clients and execs.
Meltwater
What do you like best about the product?
I liked the daily reports and the information it provided, as well as the ability to change which competitors and areas to watch or not watch.
What do you dislike about the product?
There was a little learning curve to the program, but overall it is very user-friendly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's a great program to see our mentions and what our competitors are saying.
Okay platform, disappointing service
What do you like best about the product?
I think the Meltwater platform idea is a good one for PR, and can work well for a bigger business with a larger team capacity.
What do you dislike about the product?
The account representatives always acted like they wanted to help, would email incessantly, but then accomplish really nothing. Our team didn't have the time/capacity to get our money's worth out of the platform and stated that repeatedly to our account representatives... However, they told us Oct. 10 or so that there was an auto-renewal clause in the contract and you have to opt out 60 days before the end of the term - our fault for not looking it over, but it was really disappointing that they weren't more up front about this. It is a really pricey product to have auto-renewal, especially for a start up like ours. They ended up working with us to get it removed, but even on the closing phone call tried to upsell me. They are ALWAYS trying to upsell you. ALWAYS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were hoping to be able to connect with media outlets relative to our business.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure your team is going to be able to dedicate the time to getting your money's worth.
Ask for them to take the auto-renewal clause out of your contract before entering the agreement.
Ask for them to take the auto-renewal clause out of your contract before entering the agreement.
A good Platform, some drawbacks
What do you like best about the product?
Meltwater makes my PR outreach easier and faster. I can easily search reporters and journalists by topics, source, keyword, etc. and add them to a list where I can outreach in bulk.
What do you dislike about the product?
Meltwater does not display MANY journalist I find when searching manually. Even when I search the specific source or topic I know they have written under or about, still nothing. Also, Meltwater does not make follow up easy or allow personalization.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Reaching out to many journalist to secure PR articles. Monitoring the results as well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go through the demo with consultants, they will show you everything.
Our team has been very helpful and involved in setup and training and the system is valuable to us.
What do you like best about the product?
My team's favorite part of the platform is the "Influencers" tab. The editorial contact database and press release system is very helpful and useful.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be nice to be able to have different RSS feeds for different websites so different newsfeeds could be fed to different websites. Right now, this is not possible, but we have several regional sites that have unique news.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are trying to position ourselves as an industry expert in our industry and with that, we are writing more content, contributing to outside publications, etc. and with the influencer database, we are able to more easily contact editors to enhance our media touches.
Amazing tool and outstanding support
What do you like best about the product?
Meltwater has so many amazing features that allow me to find any mentions of my organization or our members online and to find relevant reporters that would want to write about our work. The support is also amazing and goes above an beyond to understand what our company's mission in and how they can support that mission. The software is also very user friendly and I have picked up many tricks by using it.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is very expensive and some of the services could be found for a lower price elsewhere.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Meltwater has helped me find reporters that are in the right location for different events that my organization is a part of and these reporters are interested in our work. Meltwater has also allowed my organization to track our media coverage and see what kinds of stories are getting the most interest.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Really useful if you want to search through news about your organization in a very thorough manner or if you send out a lot of press releases or media advisories.
