With NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP, you can move all your data to the cloud or maintain a hybrid cloud environment using a proven replication protocol. You can also take snapshots of your data without requiring additional storage or impacting your application's performance, and even move selected snapshots to lower-cost storage for backup and disaster recovery purposes.
NetApp SnapMirror data replication technology (as part of Cloud Volumes ONTAP) makes use of data snapshots to manage the transfer of data from one location to another. The NetApp Cloud Sync service provides an automated way to get data into AWS, run a service such as Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR), Amazon Redshift, or Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), and get that data back on premises.
Local US government leverages NetApp to quickly migrate massive data to the cloud
A major city in the eastern United States needed a significant data storage upgrade – fast – but faced a lengthy procurement process. The city also required zero service disruptions from infrastructure changes, as the city generates massive volumes of data daily. Their IT provider presented two options: build another data center or transition to the cloud with the NetApp® Cloud Volumes ONTAP® cloud-based solution.
The IT provider completed an evaluation of Cloud Volumes ONTAP and saw that the transition to the cloud would be seamless. The same features for the on-premises solution were also available on the cloud-based solution, and no additional staff or training was required. Helping seal the deal were the security, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of the AWS cloud and the IT provider’s familiarity with both AWS and NetApp.
Within days, the IT provider replicated 80TB-100TB to the cloud, freeing up significant space in the data center and reducing the city’s overall cost of ownership. Now the city can move data between the cloud and its on-premises data center, and dynamically expand its storage as needed.
