Web application firewall (WAF)

Protect web applications from common web exploits.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides data center and network architecture built to meet the most security stringent requirements. Public sector organizations are responsible for securing services built on this infrastructure, notably network traffic from remote networks. A Web Application Firewall (WAF) secures the application layer by protecting web-facing applications from automated and targeted attacks. Securing applications against these threats ensure application availability and minimizes the risk of an attack using an application as an entry point into the entire system.

Solutions

Barracuda Networks

Barracuda CloudGen WAF provides application security and data loss prevention for applications hosted on AWS. It has achieved AWS Security competency certification and is available via metered usage-based billing.

Highlights include:

  • Detects and blocks SQL injections, cross-site scripting, malware uploads, volumetric & application DDoS, or any other attacks against your application
  • Authentication and access control capabilities restrict access to sensitive applications or data to authorized users
  • Scans outbound traffic to detect sensitive data and can either mask or block the information from being leaked out
  • Application acceleration capabilities, including caching, compression, and connection pooling for faster application delivery of web application content

The Barracuda CloudGen WAF blocks sophisticated web-based intrusions and attacks that target the applications hosted on web servers, and the sensitive or confidential data to which they have access. Barracuda CloudGen WAF scans all inbound web traffic to block attacks and scans outbound traffic, providing highly effective data loss prevention.

No More Ransom logo
The No More Ransom coalition was founded in 2016 by Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre, the Dutch police, and McAfee to address the rapid growth of ransomware and provide a central, public repository of knowledge and resources to help fight ransomware. AWS was approached by the project to provide hosting and security for www.nomoreransom.org along with maximum agility and flexibility. AWS integrated its native security with application security using Barracuda CloudGen WAF.

Within days of going live, the No More Ransom site came under attack, with Barracuda CloudGen WAF blocking more than 51,000 attacks ranging from standard DDoS attacks to more exotic and sophisticated attacks on portions of the infrastructure. To date the website continues to operate smoothly and has never been brought down by attackers.

No More Ransom is the best example of Public Private Partnership I have seen to date. The professionalism of these companies and their ability to deliver was integral to the success of the project.
