CentOS
I choosed CentOS because It is often used in work place.
The login account was 'root' not 'ec2-user'.
I wanted to try installing My SQL 5.6 and needed to download the rpm files from dev.mysql.com. I found that lynx can be used on CentOS. To install lynx, type 'yum install lynx'.
I used Amazon Linux for a substitute of CentOS when there were no CentOS official AMIs but I found that Amazon Linux and CentOS were slightly different around rpm packages.
overall is good but no Aws API install
Overall everything is good but it will be much better if installed with amazon API tools to easy manage and handle AWS things since this was launch in Amazon AWS
Default user name for SSH is root
A lot of EC2 information suggests the usual user name for any Linux AMI, including CentOS, is ec2-user. That is not true for this AMI, and if you try to use ec2-user@theipaddress in your SSH command line, you will be prompted for a password -- where none exists.
Be aware, you need to set up a key pair for SSH access (kind of obvious) and then use the user name root for SSH access (not obvious). Being prompted for a password is clear evidence the user name is wrong.
Solid experience, however not configured for additional storage
Tested this image- solid, except:
Additional EBS 40GB storage of the c3.xlarge machine is NOT available as /dev/xvd. or /dev/sd. disk, even though the volume IS attached to the instance.
PS: The CentOS image supplied by Bashton will mount the additional volume on /media/ephemeral0.
CentOS and other Linux VMs
Just thought I give this a trail before committing fully into buying it. Even though it might be more expensive for the average user than most third party hosts, the value we got so far does really measure up :-
1. Very secure environment. Key exchange for SSH for example.
2. Console to manage and reboot the instances. This is especially helpful if you messed up an install and the instance doesn't come right back on.
3. The Linux distros are all clean. LAMP etc are fully under the instance owners control to configure from scratch. For the average user this might be a setback, but I found managing Apache etc myself rather than relying on cPanel gave me much better control on the memory and resource usage.
4. Full control on billing, with alerts on usage and more
For people who are used to cPanel, there are free alternatives which could be installed. It is also possible to install a desktop allowing mstsc to RDP to the linux install (lxde works very well).
One thing to note, when setting up the instance - MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE PRIVATE KEYS SINCE YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE!
does what it says on the tin.
i had to install twice, because the first time i installed it i messed up my iredmail installation.
the distinction between the other releases and this one (with updates). once again i installed the wrong one the first time around.
but thanks for it. much appreciated.
Ec2
This is good opportunity from amazon site for learning some thing. its improve our cloud computing environments with Linux infrastructure.
Nice and bare bones
This one is for the people who know linux. Not much coming out of the box. I used it for node.js server, and it is nice not having all sorts of stuff running that I will never use.
My notes for installing it as a node.js server:

Mkkl.
Centos Official AMI + Updates
The product installed without issues and I recommend it to anyone that has a CentOS specific need.
I prefer using the Official CentOS AMI without updates but this might be what you need.
Else just use AWS Linux.
