The best RAD and Agile tool on the market

What do you like best about the product?
It's easy to get started, and easy to get more experienced in. As an experienced developer, it doesn't hold you back though, you can do almost everything you could also do by handcrafting C# or JavaScript. It also allows you extending the Platform by writing C# or Java and JavaScript.

Most of the nasty details of AJAX and REST are safely hidden from view, giving you a very versatile but easy to master development tool for day to day use. It is by far the most productive tool I've worked with, and I've worked with some. I also love that the Platform outputs C# or Java and uses MSSQL and Oracle instead of using proprietary stuff, so it scales easily by using conventional server configurations.

OutSystems also offers free (yes FREE!) access to a personal development environment in the cloud to learn how to use the platform and develop your own apps. They have an active forum where users can meet and ask questions, and a very good support team.

Last but not least, the Platform continues to evolve. OutSystems is quick to embrace new technologies, whether it is AJAX, REST or responsive design, and enhances and improves both the capabilities of its Platform and their development tools by releasing new versions once or twice a year. And what's more: they listen to their users! Many feature requests that started out as ideas in the user community have been implemented to make the Platform even better.
What do you dislike about the product?
If anything, it's the steep licence costs. A medium to large business would not find it insurmountable, but small business can likely forget to use the OutSystems Platform, especially since a licence for either Windows, IIS and MSSQL or Oracle is also needed. I've seen many IT professionals getting excited by the Platform and what it has to offer, but being downright disappointed when they heard the licensing fees.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
All of them. My company uses the Platform for all of its business needs, safe for finances and the company web site. So that means sales, sourcing, CRM, billing and (e-)invoicing, intrabranch communications, and our customer portal. Benefits realized are the quick time to market (we have a 2-week delivery cycle), and the speed with which new, complex projects are targeted and delivered.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
View the tutorials, sign up for a free personal environment in the cloud, and experience the easy of app development with the OutSystems Platform!

Wonderful working with Outsystems

What do you like best about the product?
There are many things I like about Outsystems such as the built in user manager, built in feedback manager, the growing community (both the forum and the forge) and also their excellent customer service. But I would have to say that the thing I like the most is the speed at which you can deliver your product to the customer. Me and my colleague were able to deliver a fully functional application to our client in only 2 days!
What do you dislike about the product?
There are very few things that I dislike about OS. My biggest issue is probably that you have to do things "the Outsystems way" (which I might add is not particularly a bad thing). Outsystems gives you tremendous freedom and ability to get into almost every detail about your application but there have been times that I would have liked to have done things a certain way but opted instead to do it "the Outsystems way", which again, isn't necessarily a bad thing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Most of my work has been for one of the largest fiber optic cable suppliers in Iceland. The biggest thing we have been able to do is revolutionize the way the people out in the field work. Before orders were carried out by filling out a form on paper which later had to be entered into a computer when workers got back to their station. Now, all of their field workers are equipped with Android tablets where they receive and carryout their orders. The process of setting up the fiber optics cable is also included in the application along with the requirements of taking photos of the setup process and customer signing for the work on the tablet. The application then goes on to create a PDF for the customer with all the information the worker entered in along with the photos and signatures.

This has reduced the number of complaints, they have reduced the amount of paperwork dramatically and have been able to increase productivity.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go through the beginners courses they offer, they are really helpful and help get you going on your journey!

My second advice is (when you are finished with the beginners courses) try stuff out in your personal environment. Try consuming a web service, go to the forge and look around, download application and see how they are developed and try to imitate them.

Love developing with OutSystems

What do you like best about the product?
It is fast to develop in OutSystems. Using it makes developers better because it ensures that they follow best practices around security, data access, etc. Most of the common UI patterns are built-into the platform, which makes it a breeze to get day-to-day work done. OutSystems as a company continues to build on the foundation and improve it. The people are OutSystems are great *people* in terms of how they treat you, their motivation to do the right thing, etc. I have never felt like they were holding me hostage to a contract saying "we refuse to do this".
What do you dislike about the product?
A few UI concepts are hard to implement. You feel like "oh, we don't need a DBA now!" and then you realize that you still do, especially for troubleshooting certain performance problems. It can be difficult to convince some developers to approach it with an open mind.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Get to market quickly, involve the business team (PMs, BAs, stakeholders, etc.) more in the development process, heavy creation of workflow/processes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be open minded, take the time to THOROUGHLY go through the video tutorials! They are key to getting the learning on the product. Get active on the forums, ask questions there and you will see that there is plenty of help available.

The Price is right but i wish it was cheaper but it all depends on the scale you develop and there is a cloud where you can try and use it on a small scale and for personal use.

- Faster development
- Easier to monitor for errors
- Easy to Admin
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This platform delivers with flying colors what it promises:

What do you like best about the product?
Definitely Outsystems platform keeps its promises:
"The OutSystems Agile Platform gives IT the power to build and change custom enterprise applications with the speed, agility and robustness the business demands."

Where Outsystems makes the difference is even beyond application development, because supports the entire application lifecycle, making it easy for teams to deploy, manage and operate up to hundreds of different apps.

Pros:
- Development speed with Outsystems is outstanding.
- Outsystems offers a Public Cloud PaaS that's perfect to evaluate the platform.
- Monitoring and Management: Configuration management of running applications and identity management are also handled out-of-the box by OutSystems Platform. All apps are automatically monitored
What do you dislike about the product?
- Enterprise licensing can get expensive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been working with Outsystems since 2008, as Consultant I have used the Outsystems platform to delivery several projects for several companies.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Outsystems offers a Public Cloud PaaS that's perfect to evaluate the platform. Give it a try!

Truely an amazing feat in Systems Development.

What do you like best about the product?
The way it does self-healing and change analysis is really fantastic. This is simply an enabler especially to people who are new in programming. No more problems on re-allocating resources as it is very easy to learn and reverse-engineer existing apps. Includes pre-built libraries/plug-ins and great looking templates addressing the usual UI/UX concerns. Has even an existing, growing and very active community. Most importantlly, it supports Multi-Tenancy!
What do you dislike about the product?
1. Needs clear breakdown of consumed units or objects (licensing coverage) per application which is very important in sizing up projects.
2. User instance ("Named Users") may have limits depending on the acquired license.
3. Does not support SVN-like version control yet. Maybe it's by design. But it's really a big plus to have.
4. Customizing UI can be very tough. But I'm pretty sure there's something there that will work one way or another.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've been working on legacy SAP, Database and Web Services (API) integrations and I would say it's really simplified.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I highly recommend this Platform to anyone who wanted to have a quick way of building Entrerprise-grade applications with less time and resources, or basically just to jump-start aspiring developers. If you're practising Agile Development, then this is the right one for you.

OutSystems experience

  • March 12, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using it as a tool to gain experience as a Beginner Consultant and, having used other full-stack platforms and technlogies, like the MEAN stack, I can say that I'm amazed at what the platform can do and it has been an amazing experience so far.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think that the Javascript integration and usage could be made a little bit more clear and intuitive, because sometimes, there are scenarios where its usage is very useful and it has been a bit difficult using it for me.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've mostly been solving problems related to back-office implementation of systems to manage products and services, such as a hotel booking management app and it has been a very rewarding experience.

Best experience ever with a development environment

What do you like best about the product?
There is not just one thing I like about the Outsystems Platform. I like the ease -of-use to build applications and the speed of deployment to production, The out-of-the-box Analytics to monitor the performance, the quality of the supportdesk and the active community.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing that I don't like about the platform is the mystery around new versions. I would love to see a roadmap with a timeline for new functionalities and bugfixes. In relation to this I would also like to see from the Development Team which Ideas that are posted on the forum are put on the backlog and which will never be delivered.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I like to simplify business processes via automation.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Tryout the free Personal Edition and build a small application to see if it suits your needs.

Outsystems has met all the value promises made in the sales process

What do you like best about the product?
The speed and quality of the applications that our developers are able to produce in response to our business demands. In 18 months we have modernized our production suite of applications and enabled the Business to enter the "Cloud Age". We have leapfrogged our competitors.
In addition getting new developers onto to the platform, trained and productive takes approximately 3 weeks thanks to the online tutorials. The fact that the platform supports "native code" generation and scales using the standard MS Technology stack makes the services developed easy to manage with existing investments in resources. Its hybrid cloud capabilities has created new business opportunities.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not much from a technical point of view. It would be nice if Outsystems was a bit more aggressive in their Marketing and sales.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The main business problem we faced was that out technology was old and past it's sell by date. The result is that we could not match the agility that our Clients expected of us. We were creating new opportunities in the market but could not take advantage of them due to our aging application suite. We therefore need to find a way to rewrite our core applications in the shortest possible time and with the least amount of resources possible. In a way we were looking for a "silver bullet" . Although Outsystems is not a "silver bullet" it came the closest to being one.!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
1) Ensure your development team buy into a whole new way of developing
2) Prepare the business owners to be much more interactive with the development process
3) Re-think your project methodologies to do RAD( D= delivery)
4) Review the type of developer you employ. Able to do business analysis as well as develop.
