Modernizing Higher Education

  • April 25, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace has a great deal of options through Creative +, and courses can be designed to be engaging. I absolutely love the ability to use HTML embeds in the content area allowing the creation of OER content. We moved from Blackboard to Brightspace, and I cannot say enough good things about Jackie the trainer. She is a former professor and really helped our staff and faculty learn the tools.
What do you dislike about the product?
Be careful of the wording used by D2L during the RFP process. They do not call things the same thing as you might be call them. Also, they are not forthcoming about prices for add-on products or fees. While they think this is a good tactic because it makes the RFP price lower, it shows that they do not really understand higher education funding cycles. We can't go to bat for more money in the middle of a fiscal year. We've told them this; others have told them this and they simply refuse to change their process. So, be sure to ask all the questions and about all hidden products and fees during your RFP process. The tools are all worth it, and it stumps me why they don't just include all those opportunities at the front gate.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our faculty wanted to move away from blackboard and use a more modern LMS. D2L is very modern and engaging, and most everyone is happy with the transition.

Brightspace D2L: A Powerful, Intuitive Platform for Educators

  • April 08, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The platform is exceptionally well organized, making navigation straightforward for both instructors and learners. Its intuitive layout allows me to quickly access the tools I need to build, manage, and assess learning content. I especially appreciate the integration with tools like H5P, which enhances interactivity and student engagement.
What do you dislike about the product?
OFI: Interface with AI to allow lesson planning within the D2L frame.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With over 20 years of experience in training across government, manufacturing, and service sectors, Brightspace D2L stands out as a reliable and efficient learning management system. Since adopting it at Conestoga College, I’ve seen how well it supports professional course design, learner engagement, and performance tracking. I often think how much smoother my earlier projects would have been had I discovered this platform sooner.

Best LMS in my career

  • February 27, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
For the past 13 years, I have been managing D2L Brightspace, and in my 22-year career, it stands out as the best LMS I've encountered. Its user-friendly design, clean interface, extensive functionalities, and robust API are just a few of its many strengths. Additionally, the exceptional support provided by their professional and dedicated teams—ranging from admin and student assistance to management at all levels—further solidifies its position as a top-tier LMS.
What do you dislike about the product?
User profiles are not fully accessible out of the box, requiring the use of APIs to extract the necessary data. This initial setup may involve a steep learning curve, especially for those unfamiliar with the system or API integration.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace allows us to efficiently deliver online courses to a variety of audiences, including both institutional and external users, all within one instance.

    Professional Training & Coaching

Brightspace is a great LMS for developing courses and hosting them.

  • February 21, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It has most of the features that a course developer and trainer needs to put on a suite of courses. It is fairly easy for course participants to use, if the course designer has put thought into the flow.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is somewhat expensive. You might only use about 10% of its real capacity. You might never know what it can do.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We want course participants to be able to take their courses easily.

D2L Brightspace plays nicely with add-ons like Kaltura and H5P

  • January 08, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Migrating to Brightspace has been a massive upgrade for our institution's online learning program which has always been heavy on media and interactivity. With Brightspace, we're able to integrate Kaltura for videos and H5P with its vast array of interactive components. D2L has a wonderful support community, an annual conference, in-depth documentation, and a well-organized feature request system.
What do you dislike about the product?
After migrating from a custom-built LMS in which we had direct control of our upgrades, we aren't able to prioritize our institutions needs over D2L's broad customer base. So, feature requests that might be very important to our school might not be a huge priority to many of the other institutions D2L serves.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace allows us to build, update and deliver a high volume of online courses to our international student population.

Best Support Team Ever

  • January 08, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We are relatively new to using D2L Brightspace, but our team has experience with three other LMS platforms. When we made the decision to adopt Brightspace for the Competency-Based Education courses we were developing, we were a little hesitant to start with a new platform. However, our review of the features of competency-based education revealed that D2L has integrated this approach to teaching and learning into its design. Any concerns we had about adopting Brightspace were erased as soon as we began working with our implementation team. The responsiveness of their support team and their engagement with us as we considered features and LTI to integrate now (and those to save for further along in our program development) made often anticipated concerns and quickly alleviated those that were not anticipated.

The certificate training and the online resources make it an easy-to-use platform for our instructors and learners. Our instructors and mentors rely on the reports daily to support our learners. If an institution is considering developing a competency-based program, I fully endorse D2L Brightspace as the LMS of choice.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only element that took a little getting used to would be questions about are you using the new option of x feature or the old option of x feature. Sometimes it is not clear to us as brand new users what is new and what is old. But the resources are all there and the support teams are always kind and patient in responding to our inquiries.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using D2L Brightspace to support our comptency-based courses and programs.

I am very happy with what Brightspace offers in terms of features, look, and flexibility of use.

  • January 06, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
From an admin point of view, the flexibility in how you can set up the VLE in terms of course organisation and the course layout is very useful. Allowing you to create bespoke brands and layouts for different campuses and or departments.
The platfrom is also very visually appealing and intuitive to learners without being overly clutered.
What do you dislike about the product?
The gradebook can be a little confusing to get used to and a one stop gradebook shop for learners is not available. Currently instructors either have to create a folder with all assessment links or learners have to remember whether the assessment is a quiz, an assignment, or some other 3rd party assessment tool. It would be great to be able to use the learner gradebook view as a place to also take (link to) the assessments as well as view grades and feedback.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L Brightspace helps make learning personalised and engaging and is easy to access from anywhere. Instructors save time with automated tasks like grading, and they get useful insights from the platform’s analytics. It’s flexible and can fit the needs of different organisations. Overall, it creates an efficient learning environment for everyone.

Practical and Progressive LMS

  • November 06, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace is user friendly in a special way -- it innovates while staying backward compatible for a reasonable length of time. The interface is open and there's decent context sensible help. Good community for getting help and giving input. I work with it daily both as an instructor and developer and both naitively and with integrated Articulate content. I've worked with many LMS products, in multiple capacities, since 1990s and like Brightspace best. My roles include course developer, instructor, course management coordinator and LMS migration role as functional project manager for SFU's move from WebCT to Canvas. NOTE: the review form doesn't allow for NA or "don't know" in the feature ranking section. So my rankings for some of those categories are 80% guess. Frustrating one can't pass on the things one isn't well versed in.
What do you dislike about the product?
Administration documentation can be hard to find. The community is helpful but searchable docs that understand synonyms or situations / goals would be welcome. Data hub progress is appreciated. Always something one wants that isn't easy to get out of existng choices.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our unit at UNBC hosts self-paced courses using rapid development software for content as well as shells for supporting academic courses using native Brightspace tools. Integration with commercial payment software is a big plus for the continuing studies courses but we can also integrate with student and employee accounts for the organization. Brightspace is flexible and quick to develop in. Decent set of tools without getting bogged down in too many complications. Steady march of new features and fixes.

Brightspace's impressive range of customizable options allows educators to adapt course content and layout, creating a unique learning experience that aligns with individual teaching styles. Brightspace's focus on adaptability and innovation supports effective learning outcomes, making it an essential tool for educational institutions seeking an efficient, comprehensive LMS.
What do you dislike about the product?
D2L Brightspace, while robust, can present a learning curve for new users due to its extensive features. Initial setup and customization may feel time-consuming, and occasional navigation inconsistencies can be challenging. Some advanced functionalities may require additional training to maximize their potential, which could be daunting for less tech-savvy users.
