What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Barracuda Email Protection is that we regularly send out phishing line campaigns to our users to gauge engagement and implement training sessions with our users. It's a great way to see if the security training and awareness you are providing your users are paying dividends. We also use this to help train our users about the phishing and other forms of email attacks, as well as the general risk of cybercrime.

Barracuda Email Protection also allows us to test our endpoint protection product using a collection of file-based attacks.

What is most valuable?

The best features Barracuda Email Protection offers include training and reporting, SMS attack testing, and USB key attack testing.

When I mention SMS and USB key attack testing, I find it great for those without any security training tools, particularly small businesses or those without in-house security teams.

Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted my organization by helping us meet requirements by our insurance to train users on the risk of phishing. However, the dated interface slows down what should be seamless adoption.

What needs improvement?

Barracuda Email Protection can be improved, as the setup was not as simple as it should have been. Additionally, some of the training that is supplied has a thick American accent which puts us off.

Making the interface less confusing is essential, as it is almost too powerful, which leads to confusion.

I have been using Barracuda Email Protection for six years and eight months.

Barracuda Email Protection is stable.

I have seen a return on investment, as there are less problems for our security team, and our staff is more aware of how to use Barracuda Email Protection, as well as more aware of possible malware attacks via email.

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing indicates that the cost was average. It was not expensive, neither was it affordable; it was average.

These features help my team educate people and make them aware of security risks.

Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted my organization by preventing possible malware attacks via emails, resulting in fewer password stealing incidents, more security awareness, and additional benefits.

The additional benefits I mentioned are that Barracuda Email Protection has helped us learn more about other things that we did not know were present in our department or organization, so we have gained knowledge about other environments.

What needs improvement?

Barracuda Email Protection's filtering is very good but could be just slightly better; it does get 95% of the spam, but a couple get through in a week that are obviously spam.

I have been using Barracuda Email Protection for four years and nine months.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for others looking into using Barracuda Email Protection is that it is a good add-on for Office 365, and good guides are available to get set up to provide filtering quickly; it can give users the ability to approve their own blocked emails or set it to only allow admins to release, keeping a good audit log that details every action taken by support staff. I would rate this product highly based on my experience.

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Barracuda Email Protection is that when we originally signed up for Microsoft 365, their built-in DLP was inadequate and rarely caught critical items that needed protection. We needed a better solution and started looking around, and Barracuda Email Protection was cost-effective and performed well. For us, it is now performing spam filtering, business email continuity, DLP, malware and virus filtering, and URL review to ensure phishing emails do not get through.

Barracuda Email Protection helped our team solve issues where our customers' emails were being detected as hacking attempts, so we used Barracuda Email Protection to protect them from being hacked.

What is most valuable?

Barracuda Email Protection offers cost-effective features that do not strain budgets, including training, implementation, custom templates, and default libraries.

Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted our organization by helping us save 55 to 65 percent of our time since it is easier to use, is affordable, and we are able to use it quickly. I calculated that time savings by noting that it was due to both less manual intervention and fewer incidents of customers complaining about their emails being hacked.

What needs improvement?

Barracuda Email Protection can be improved in that email pass-through occurs even when the domain is in many block lists, and it includes phishing for PayPal.

Their DLP is somewhat inflexible and cannot handle custom additions. You either turn on the group of regulations you want to protect against, such as PCI DSS or credit cards, and take the default or you do not, with nothing outside of that.

I wish the Microsoft 365 built-in tools were better, but Barracuda Email Protection does a good job of taking their place. For industries that need DLP on their email, such as healthcare, banking, and education, Barracuda Email Protection provides a reliable product for a good cost. Additional services include malware, antivirus filtering, URL filtering, spam protection, and business continuity, which are all valuable additions. The only issue we have experienced is that it sometimes takes a back-and-forth string of emails and decides randomly to encrypt it, so what was a benign conversation is now locked behind a wall for recipients. As the sender, I have no idea when it will decide to do this, and I have to remember to tag emails with a decrypting tag long before it happens or face the consequences. I give Barracuda Email Protection an overall rating of 9.

My main use case for Barracuda Email Protection is that it helps to make companies aware of how a security breach is a mail away. With campaign and results, we can show how email security is important in today's society. This product can be used in order to educate people on how to be more aware of security risk in enterprise and home environments. It allows us to make sure we are on top of security awareness with our employees. The training helps employees think before clicking on a link.

A quick specific example of how Barracuda Email Protection helped my team is that it helped us bolster the human element of cybersecurity. Barracuda Email Protection can be improved as the setup was not as simple as it should have been. The interface is very outdated and cumbersome.

Microsoft 365 Defender users will probably not need it either, as Microsoft's in-built tools have really come along and have a much better interface.

I do not have any additional thoughts about Barracuda Email Protection before we wrap up.

I would rate Barracuda Email Protection an eight out of ten because its setup is a bit difficult and not as simple as one could think.

What is our primary use case?

We are still working with Barracuda Email Protection. The requirement for Barracuda Email Protection is to ensure security over all emails that come into the office, so it protects us from all malicious code, phishing, and ransomware attacks. It saves us from all of them, and it also tells us if there is a vulnerability in any user.

What is most valuable?

The functions in Barracuda Email Protection that I find the most valuable are the way it is reported and the way the solution is given for a threat if it has found one. The way it has protected malicious mails from being delivered makes a huge impact.

Threat Protection is a feature we use, which only gives us an advanced warning or an alert on any kind of malicious code coming in as an email.

Link Protection for email security is very important and very useful. We do use Link Protection extensively.

We do use Barracuda Data Protection functions, and the advantage we have is that the backed up data is protected from any possible attack that can come or any kind of hijack or data being misused. The Data Protection feature helps us ensure that the data is safe.

Barracuda Email Protection helps us prevent accidental data leaks because it gives Link Protection, so you don't click a link by oversight or mistake thinking it is genuine. This ensures that your chances of being vulnerable are gone, and the data used for protection is also safe, so we don't see any kind of data leak coming through this.

The main benefits Barracuda Email Protection provides for us are saving time and money because we don't run into any kind of attack or disruption in the mail service that we may face, including ransomware attacks. That is definitely important for us; the workflow is there but it is not that critical at this point. However, it is important to be protected and save money.

What needs improvement?

In my opinion, Barracuda Email Protection can improve by possibly adding more features towards zero trust capabilities or towards ensuring that the data protected is more secure, such as a vault. Additionally, the retrieval feature through Outlook, which is the email client that we use most, can be improved.

For the purpose for which we use it, I see no lack of function in Barracuda Email Protection. The wishlist can always be there to enhance it, but from what it is meant to do, it is fairly up-to-date and modern.

I have been working with Barracuda Email Protection for about six to seven years.

The setup process for Barracuda Email Protection is quite simple. We did the setup ourselves; our team installed it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did compare Barracuda Email Protection with other products, specifically Check Point Harmony. We chose Barracuda Email Protection over Harmony because we found Barracuda Email Protection's strike rate on identifying detection was much higher. Second, we found Barracuda Email Protection's pricing to be far more comparable and reasonable than Harmony. Additionally, I found the speed of Harmony was not as good as Barracuda Email Protection.

What other advice do I have?

I would give Barracuda Email Protection a final mark of about nine. We strongly recommend users to go with Barracuda Email Protection.

What is our primary use case?

We are using Barracuda Email Protection, which is an email defense solution. We utilize the Threat Protection feature, including declination, cloud features, backup, and archiving.

We do use Barracuda Email Protection's data protection features. Barracuda Email Protection's data protection feature is effective because we are using the archiving and all emails have been archived with Barracuda Email Protection archiving.

I have found value in the actionable analytics provided. The benefits my customers have seen from the actionable analytics include pulling out more data and analyzing real-time threats.

I assess the impact of Barracuda Email Protection on compliance efforts regarding security events as good. There are two issues that I can think of in terms of compliance, such as local data storage, which they do not have. We are storing the data in another foreign country, which is not how it is supposed to be. Our data must be within the South African borders. I think that compliance part is the one that is lacking there.

What is most valuable?

Threat Protection feature is a good tool and a very efficient tool. I tried competitors' solutions.

The link protection feature is good and it impacts our organization's email safety by detecting links that other security solutions would let pass through. It locks them, blocks them, and quarantines them sometimes.

I assess Barracuda Email Protection's ability to prevent accidental data leaks as good because they are using RDL and scoring. If it finds something with a low score, it is quarantined or blocked on our end.

What I use to evaluate the effectiveness of Barracuda Email Protection's email security features are metrics depending on the scoring. Barracuda Email Protection has scoring to indicate if something is spam or a phishing link, and the scoring is at 100%. If we see that it is a false positive from our end, we release it so that machine learning could improve for next time.

I think the automatic security updates are good and very effective. These updates have helped my customers counter emerging threats by allowing them to notice if there is a new interface. We started with an old Barracuda Email Protection interface, and now you can click to get to the new interface, which I found very good and helpful.

The real-time attack detection feature has improved their threat response strategies significantly.

What needs improvement?

I think Barracuda Email Protection can be improved in the reporting part. They need to do something with the reporting and it needs to be in PDF format. At the moment, it is in Excel, and the reporting is very average. What we need to do on our side is not a standard way of reporting; we need to infuse the data that is being pulled from Barracuda Email Protection to Power BI and then generate our own reports. I am not using their report.

Regarding the price, I find it pretty expensive. It is not even reasonable; it is pretty expensive because we are dealing with the South African market and our currency is not as powerful as the dollar. That is where we are struggling a little bit with this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Barracuda Email Protection for about five years.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate the technical support for Barracuda Email Protection as eight. They take long to respond, but they know their content and are good at it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Barracuda Email Protection is straightforward and simple. The only challenge is that Barracuda Email Protection always supports cloud. We tried to implement it on-premises, but it was struggling and we had to maneuver through and resolve some conflicts so that it could accommodate on-premises Microsoft. However, Exchange Online comes through very well with Exchange Online and Microsoft 365.

What other advice do I have?

You can purchase Barracuda Email Protection directly from Barracuda. We deal with Barracuda Email Protection as a Service. I have been working with Barracuda Email Protection as a Service for about five years as well. I usually recommend Barracuda Email Protection for private and government companies. I rate this review an 8.

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case for Barracuda Email Protection is as a mid-size company running Microsoft 365, and we want one platform to handle phishing, business email compromise, malicious attachments, links, post-delivery cleanup, outbound data protection, and email resilience during an outage. Barracuda Email Protection is built exactly for this kind of layered email security workflow with gateway filtering, also providing our company with API-based inboxing defense, automation remediation, and many excellent features.

A specific example of how we use Barracuda Email Protection in our daily workflow is that we used it to stop most spam and phishing emails that arrived to the CFO. We have many domains working and sending us payments, and we experience phishing and spear-phishing attacks. We have many competitors, and we are targeted by these competitors. We have a lot of attacks, so we rely on Barracuda Email Protection to stop these attacks and protect our business continuity on email systems.

What is most valuable?

The best features Barracuda Email Protection offers include its ability to stop and identify impersonations and business email compromise protection. This is one of the features.

The second feature I find valuable is the advanced threat protection module, which includes attachment scanning and is very good on this product.

Regarding the features, we have a reporting module that is very good, and we also have an incident response and automatic remediation feature. This is powerful, and I think this is the most beneficial on Barracuda Email Protection.

Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted our organization because we rely on it to stop spear-phishing and phishing overall, enabling us to conduct our business securely. We are safe from attackers on email systems, allowing us to conduct our business safely. I see that Barracuda Email Protection has great and capable features we can rely on.

We have seen specific outcomes since using Barracuda Email Protection, such as a reduction in phishing incidents by 20 percent. We are also maintaining our business, which enables us to receive normal emails without any delays while integrating well with our existing Microsoft Office 365. Additionally, Barracuda Email Protection supports many compliance options, helping us run and meet compliance requirements.

What needs improvement?

Barracuda Email Protection can be improved by providing more reporting features for incident management. This will be very beneficial for us.

I would rate Barracuda Email Protection a 10 out of 10. I give it a 10 because I think it is the most suitable product for Office 365 and has capable features to stop phishing attacks and maintain business operations. My advice to others considering Barracuda Email Protection is that before you run it, you should first identify that you already have Microsoft 365 to protect and have mailboxes. Do not use an email gateway from Barracuda Email Protection because it has many modules. Barracuda Email Protection is a good fit with Office 365. I rate this product a 10 overall.

Struggled with spam control and have faced persistent gaps in data protection and support

What is our primary use case?

I no longer deal with Barracuda Email Protection. We only deal with the firewall, specifically Barracuda Firewall, as the product was changed to another solution.

I stopped working with Barracuda WAF and Barracuda Email Protection last year.

With Barracuda Email Protection, the features I find most valuable are spam filtering, as it is primarily used for spam protection. The antivirus component uses an antivirus solution, though I am uncertain which specific antivirus they are using.

The customers who used Barracuda Email Protection were from the finance and banking sectors.

What is most valuable?

With Barracuda Email Protection, the features I find most valuable are spam filtering, as it is primarily used for spam protection. The antivirus component uses an antivirus solution, though I am uncertain which specific antivirus they are using.

The link protection feature has impacted my customers positively. I believe they have link protection functionality.

Regarding the data protection features in Barracuda, I am not certain which are the most beneficial.

What needs improvement?

I am uncertain if Barracuda has DLP (Data Leak Protection). They do not have DLP, I believe. The product is very basic in that regard. When we compete with FortiGate, they have DMARC capabilities. Barracuda Email Protection did not have DMARC, I think. They also didn't have DKIM. You must depend on server DKIM functionality or something similar.

In assessing Barracuda Email Protection's ability to prevent accidental data leaks, they didn't have data leak protection. I believe they lacked data leak protection capabilities. This is why my customer changed to another competitor, and we lost the project.

I think Barracuda Email Protection could improve in the future to make it more competitive by addressing the fact that Barracuda started with anti-spam and email protection, but now they are moving more to cloud-based solutions rather than device-based or hardware-based solutions. Most of the new features are for the cloud, and they work with Google and Outlook Exchange Online.

I consider it problematic that they are moving completely to the cloud. I think they should maintain something on-premise as well.

For the features I would prefer to see, DKIM is a priority. I have already protested for three years about why they cannot implement DKIM functionality.

I believe all features available in the cloud must also be available in the on-premise solution. Why would you put more features in the cloud but not in the on-premise version? The problem is their server is not in Indonesia. Their server is in the United States. In our country, you must store the data within Indonesia. This is the problem. I cannot sell your product if it is only available in other countries. This is why I cannot sell the cloud-based Barracuda Email Protection in Indonesia due to data residency requirements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I worked with Barracuda Email Protection for approximately four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Customers chose a different product after experiencing a problem when they upgraded the firmware, which caused the system to restart multiple times during working hours.

They changed to Fortinet because of the instability caused by the firmware upgrade. I discussed this issue with Barracuda, but they only patched the problem repeatedly without solving it. After six months, they identified the issue and recommended upgrading the memory configuration, which solved the problem. I was frustrated with Barracuda because resolving something of this nature took six months. After four years of working with this customer, I lost the project because of this incident, which seemed like a preventable error.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

When it comes to functionalities and stability, Barracuda Email Protection is still a good solution. However, regarding scalability, you must change the product box if you want to increase scalability. I am referring to the on-premise hardware version, not the virtual version. If you are using the virtual version, scalability is acceptable because you simply change your subscription and gain scalability. However, with the hardware product, you must change the box. Barracuda does not limit you based on how many mailboxes or users you have, which is one of the good things for Barracuda. This is concerning the box performance. With other products, you must depend on the number of mailboxes and users involved in the protection.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate the technical support from Barracuda as three out of ten. The technical support is poor. For email security specifically, the support is inadequate. For other products such as WAF and network solutions, the support is acceptable. However, for email, the support is insufficient. You need six months to solve a problem. Every one to two months, the email system restarts. This is particularly problematic for a financial institution and banking customer.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Barracuda Email Protection is straightforward because we had been working with this customer for years already. We never had a problem with the initial setup. Everything, when troubleshooting occurred, was handled appropriately. However, during the last year, I felt the support from Barracuda was unsatisfactory.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think the costs of Barracuda Email Protection are acceptable because I am selling another software license for anti-spam, and I have no problem with that product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

What is our primary use case?

Barracuda Email Protection is an essential addition to our email security suite, and we use it ourselves and for other clients at present. It is simply the best anti-spam gateway I have used, better than Trend and Mimecast and other products I used in the distant past. As a front-end gateway with a well-thought-out user interface, it is easy to see messages from external clients that were either caught up in anti-spam or antivirus queues and explain to end-users what happened to their email.

I use Barracuda Email Protection with our clients as an excellent anti-spam gateway with the best logging display of messages I have seen. It is so easy to identify what happened to messages, which is so important when I am the person they call when things go wrong and messages are not received. It takes seconds to set up and minutes to configure. It is very easy to use for both my clients and myself.

The email spam filtering is very great, email encryption, and email archiving are all features that we support for our clients as part of our network security services packages.

How has it helped my organization?

Barracuda Email Protection has positively impacted my organization by increasing our email protection and security significantly. Our security has increased from forty percent to sixty-five percent, especially when dealing with all the threats that come through emails. It has been a great tool because we can handle email delays and delays on file scanning. It has helped us have less time chasing bad emails. The fast implementation of encrypted mail keeps employees working with less interruption since they are happy, satisfied, and secure. When our partners are happy, we are very happy.

What is most valuable?

The best features Barracuda Email Protection offers include good spam filtering and very good sandboxing of all links, as well as good encryption. It also has integrated logging for user management of their own spam. It has better filtering technology, so few are false positives as well, with excellent anti-spam engines and logging. It is extremely easy to install, configure, and set up, and there is excellent message tracking for folks that say they have not received an email they were expecting.

Integrated logging and user management make my daily work easier because it is very easy to log in and to manage this tool, hence making it a very good tool for email protection. It also has excellent, easy-to-add designated users as site administrators, and it is competitively priced.

The speed of the portal is quite slow, and the quarantine reports are scheduled-based and not on the spot itself.

Barracuda Email Protection's scalability is very good because it handles all my clients' emails and all my organization emails. It can be used by any size of organization, hence being more scalable.

The customer support is very good, and the times that I have reached out to the support team, I noticed they are very responsive. They are quick to find a solution, and they are available twenty-four seven, so overall, it is a great customer support team.

My advice to others looking into using Barracuda Email Protection is that we are using Barracuda Essentials across the organization to protect users from malicious email attacks and to secure data in the cloud backups. It solves issues in one solution: backup, protection, and reporting. All data is backed up to the cloud, including Office 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive for all users. It protects the user inbox with a myriad of content filtering and black and whitelisting. It is simple for the IT department and other departments to find quarantined emails and release them. It has increased my organization's security posture, especially when dealing with threats from emails, making it a very recommendable tool that is cost-effective and easy to use.

Our users feel more comfortable since they receive a lot less spam and phishing emails, and they love how easy it is to send encrypted emails. Barracuda Email Protection is very easy to use since it really does not take any effort from the user other than clicking one button to send outgoing encrypted emails when needed. Management is also very easy, and there is not much to do other than add or remove email addresses and add or remove domains from the spam filtering list. Overall, it is a great tool. I would rate this review an eight.
