What do you like best about the product?
Scheduling back ups and knowing that they are being done is a great load off your mind. Knowing that not only do you have a backup, but you have several versions of that back to refer to if need be, is also a great peace. NCM saves us so much time and allows us to send config to multiple devices in a matter of minutes, which not only saves times, but gets things up and running in no time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Per device NCM can be time consuming, especially if those devices do not have SNMP set up. As you have to rely on SNMP, this can sometimes get frustrating. It is also quite expensive as you grow in your IT infrastructure due to licensing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has saved us time being the biggest problem solver. It has helped us keep regular backups without anyone having to do anything manually. It helps get switches and routers back up and running in no time, as we can restore configs in a few clicks.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's an excellent module and will save you so much time. If you're backing up, reporting, need alerts on changes or simply pushing one line of config to all your devices, NCM does it seamlessly. Worth the investment.

A View from the Top

What do you like best about the product?
SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) allows you to get a view from the top of your systems. The ability to drill down and view what is going on at the process, port level is great. The appLinsight provides a great level of detail. You can prove why "It's the apps not hardware"" to management.
What do you dislike about the product?
Requires a bit of work to setup and get configured. Sales force is a pain in the butt.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Why SQL is causing so much problems and come to find out it's run away queries.

Game Changer

What do you like best about the product?
Previously we used a different product to monitor our environment and it was very limited in what it could do and there was no reporting features. The best thing I like the most about SAM is the single pane of glass to view everything about a server and the applications that you are monitoring. I also like that Solarwinds is always upgrading their products and the integration between their products is very handy and makes determining issues very easy.
What do you dislike about the product?
One thing that I feel is lacking in this product is the report building. I feel like it has not changed much over the progression of the product and I feel other products I have used offered easier report and graph building.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Due to the relatively low cost in comparison to the previous product we used we were able to purchase the ALX licenses so we are not able to monitor all of our servers and applications. In addition we can now correlate events across systems to determine where the bottle neck is and helps us reduce down time and system performance issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
In comparison to what's out there I feel for the money they offer a great product that does everything we need and more.

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to monitor all of my servers and the applications that reside on them.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not much, it pretty much provides us with what we need
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were very diverse and really had no insight into the various applications we run so now being able to look at them and categorize them has bee a great help
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would strongly recommend this product along with the whole Solar Winds suite of products

Very detailed product and great support resources

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to be very specific on what is monitored and fully customize it to your unique needs.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a bit of a learning curve, but there are tons of resources and training options.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
-- Monitoring critical services with the ability to not just notify of a problem but take action
-- Automated monitoring hard drive space before it becomes a critical issue
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This product should be able to monitor just about anything thrown at it and is very customizable to any unique situation.

Solarwinds SAM - Application Monitoring, Alerting and Reporting made easy

  • April 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
SAM gives you a very good tool set to manage your servers and applications. Beside a big amount of "out of the box" monitors for a lot of application you can easily create your own monitors with the base components presented by SAM.
Alerting and reporting are very well supported by the SAM infrastructure. It is possible to create a report or alert on every measured attribute. For alerts it is also possible to create relationships between different attributes. With alerts you can automate certain tasks like restarting a process. It is also possible to escalate alerts. Beside the vendor it is possible to find a lot of solutions in the Solarwinds user portal "Thwack". This user portal is one of the biggest advantages of Solarwinds.
Beside that is the integration of SAM with the other monitoring tools in the Solarwinds Eco system a big factor. This reduces costs in education and helps to solve problems easier and faster.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the design of SAM is not very straight. For example it is not possible to use all UI resources used by Solarwinds in self written monitors. Also it is not always possible to use Properties in all components.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We want to monitor all our business applications with SAM and create relationships between them. We have nearly 90% in monitoring. We use the monitoring to react faster on problems and to report SLA breaches by our contractors. Also performance issues are solved with SAM together with other Solarwinds products (PM and DPA).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Look careful to the amount of components you need for monitoring the application landscape. Also look carefully where your server or application is running. If they are in different locations the SAM environment has to be designed carefully.

SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

  • April 20, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Application monitors can be created easily and use a variety of methods for measurements.
What do you dislike about the product?
Editing multiple alert definitions is a bit of a pain as is identifying which alert was triggered once acknowledged.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Skype for business edge servers running out of resources and automatically resolved.
Mobile data terminal locations plotted on a map.
Monitoring 100s of applications and their compontents.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Component counts soon add up. Make sure you buy a big enough license.

I like the fact that on the summary page you can see apps, warranty info and apps with problems.
What do you dislike about the product?
It can be difficult to find exactly what the issues might be with an app
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to monitor our customers apps.

Go well beyond basic server monitoring

  • April 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It has a ton of out-of-the-box templates for different applications, it supports Perl/PowerShell scripts to build custom templates, can be used to monitor URL response time from one of your pollers, and supports using WMI/SNMP/Agent to build custom monitors.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a limitation in only recovering 10 metrics per component, this means sometimes you have to create multiple components to pull all of the metrics you wanted. There is also a limit that the statistic value must be a number (not a huge deal, but can be annoying).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able build monitors for custom applications and things we have found to KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you test your scripts on non-production devices prior to deploying them to production to make sure it doesn't break anything.

Great product

  • April 20, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to customise the different monitors using PowerShell scripts and perfomance counters. I also like the AppInsight templates for IIS and SQL Server.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the graphic resources (charts) could probably use a refresh.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to monitor critical servers and applications that we were unable to before, thus providing valuable insight.
