Not bad for central log collection but expensive!

  • October 27, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
easy integrations with log sources. decent UI and reporting functionality.
What do you dislike about the product?
cost is way too much compared to other logging solutions such as AWS managed ELK stack or even self managed ELK stack, but those take a little more devops know-how to implement a solution. But can hire a contractor to do that and still come out way ahead if you are sending ~50GB of logs a day.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
centralized place for logging done by different applications. set up alerts for certain error thresholds.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
good initial solution but gets costly as you ramp up

Does what it is advertised to do

What do you like best about the product?
Very useful tool to automatically a scan large number of subnets and the option to import CSV files rather than having to manually enter in each subnet for scanning. A good dynamic alternative to tracking basic IP address assignment/usage than say a spreadsheet. It's easy to use, tracks historical records of IP addresses from the most recent scan and allows comments to be added to each.
What do you dislike about the product?
There's isn't much to not like about this product since it's made for a fairly specific purpose (IP address management) and it does what it was made to do. It would be nice if the subnet scanner can also process host names or fully qualified domain names rather than strictly IP addresses.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use this application as a tool to track IP address usage for a large number of subnets; some are DHCP-enabled while others are not. A lot of times when workstations with statically-assigned IP addresses are decommissioned, the IP address database may not be updated. Over time, a large number of dormant IP addresses will remain in the database, which becomes challenging when the number of available addresses in a given subnet runs low,. This tools allows us to locate these dormant IP addresses and make them available for use again.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The IP Address Tracker is a free alternative to the full-fledged IP Address Manager for users wanting to scan subnets manually and only requiring basic IP address management.

Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor

  • August 26, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The features I like the most about this tool are the fast and easy deployment and the high quality monitoring and alerting. Very nice UI, also very scalable. NPM has a lot of customization and notification that can be done
What do you dislike about the product?
The element base pricing is very expensive, can quickly escalade.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This tool helps prevent major Server downtimes with a great alert system. Every System Administrator should have this. I can't count the number of times it has saved me.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I've tried many different monitoring tools and nothing comes close to this one. I hate to repeat myself but the UI is simply amazing!

Useful monitoring tool with a bit of a learning curve

  • August 15, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's a good comprehensive solution for monitoring both internal and hosted servers in one management panel.
It has a lot of options for customization, allowing you to get a great dashboard and also tailor made alerts.
It also has a lot of integrations.
Besides monitoring downtime, we also are able to monitor everything from CPU usage and disk space to give us a heads up on imminent resource needs.
It feels like a very comprehensive solution with a lot of opportunity to add complimentary products.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is not always easy to deploy. Better deployment tools would improve the product tremendously.
We had an agent stop reporting for unfathomable reasons.
Being contacted back by support took a few days, which is not optimal for a business critical services. They were nice and competent enough, and helped us re-mediate the issue of the agent not responding, but we did expect a faster initial response time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed a tool that allowed us to monitor and generate alerts on both internal servers and servers hosted by third party providers. Especially the ability to tunnel means that we've not had any environments that we've been unable to communicate through, which is a great benefit for us.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Solarwind has a lot of power under the hood, the customization especially is a very strong feature.
You need to be prepared for both a learning curve and that the interface needs a face lift. Once you learn how to use it, you will be very happy with a very powerful product.

Great logging solution - easy to deploy as cloud based, good features, reasonable price

  • August 09, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Very quick and easy to deploy in the cloud. It seems like the product was designed from early on to live in a multi-tenant cloud solution.
The features are very focused on troubleshooting. The filtering is very good, and one of my favorite features is their "view surrounding events" option which lets you look at all the events before/after a specific event that you find.
I really like their built in feature that archives all data to AWS S3 even though there is a limited amount of data available via the web UI (14 days default). This has been critical a few times we had to go find something from a few months back.
Built in capabilities for saved searches and notifications is good.
What do you dislike about the product?
Web interface can be a little slow at times but is overall reliable. Volume pricing is pretty flexible to account for some peak days but could potentially be even more flexible to allow for irregular traffic.
They have a policy that will eventually drop data if you far exceed your volume multiple times. This is overall reasonable, but it would be nice to have an option where the data is perhaps saved but not available for searching.
The interface to saved searches could be better, as it shows some limitations once you have a lot of saved searches.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We provide a multi-channel marketing platform for retailers and brands. Our platform is deployed in AWS and we have log data from several types of application sources. Loggly helps consolidate all this log data and lets multiple people on the team search and organize the data in order to troubleshoot specific problems and ensure that our platform is operating correctly.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Excellent solution for debug log management and analysis from different sources.

Great product! Works well for most system and application monitoring

  • July 29, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Server and application monitor is a very flexible product. You can use almost any sort of scripting to gather data. It has agent or agentless communication (Linux agents are in beta) and works well with other Solarwinds products as well as external products like PagerDuty. Has a large base of partners that make integrations that work with Solarwinds products.
What do you dislike about the product?
Automation is a non-supported feature so you are on your own to figure out how to automate things though there is an active user community that is helpful for this. There is no way to install the product via scripted install so deployment within a DevOps environment is a challenge. New product release schedules are sort of random so they may show a new feature they are developing in a beta a long time before it is ready to release.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Server and application monitor allows us to work from the hardware layer though the OS and into the application layer. This has given us the ability to pinpoint issues within those areas before they become problems. When problems do occur, it is instrumental in the root cause evaluation as it provides the ability to see the timeline of events leading up to a failure.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
On a budget, Nagios is still the standard but has a higher learning curve and support can be purchased separately. Zenos was a contender as well.

Graduated to Datadog

  • July 29, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
* Simple interface makes finding things easier
* Composite metric functions are neat
What do you dislike about the product?
* Other services are starting to innovate better and faster (like Datadog).
* Using dashboards is better than spaces, but explore mode and drag-to-zoom made spaces easier to use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Database and website monitoring. We've found that it helped us for awhile, but in the end (after about 4 years), was too costly so we went with a similar product that unlocked more integrations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There are more players in this space than a few years ago, and Librato is a definite contender, but try other services to see if they fit your needs more appropriately.

Gone with the old in with the new

  • July 21, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
One of the biggest changes in NTA is the new chart styles. Gone are the old static charts, instead NTA now has charts that can be dynamically changed for custom date ranges on the fly using a sliding scale below the chart.Checkboxes allow to turn on or off the display of different chart elements, making it easy to simplify the view by removing unwanted data.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not available as standalone product – Orion Network Performance Monitor required
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring the bandwidth utilization for better QOS assignment.
