BP’s Modernization and Migration Journey

BP’s Modernization and Migration Journey

A conversation with Keisha Garcia, VP of Digital Foundations Programs at BP. Keisha has worked with BP for 14 years and has been in the energy industry for over 20 years working with large system implementations and portfolio program management.

We focus our attention on the important question, “Which Comes First, Migration or Modernization.”

BP’s digital transformation story began in 2016 when one of our executives declared us as cloud-first. The rest is history.”

Cloud-first? Why now?

Cloud-first? Why now?

The new CEO from BP, Bernard Looney, introduced a new strategy and approach to reinventing BP as a company by moving away from their identity as an oil and gas company to an energy company focused on driving their ambition to be net-zero by 2050 in alignment with the Paris agreement. So as you can see, BP is waist-deep in the process of rebuilding their entire organization’s operating model.

Keisha explains how it played out: Initially, our driving factors were around technology, trying to ensure that we were doing the latest and greatest innovative activity around infrastructure while looking at our cost over time and the fixed cost for optimization. Then we transitioned. given the fact that we're not a technology company, we're an oil and gas company, we had to realign to ensure that we were focused on the added commercial value tethered to our new business strategy. Innovation and automation were absolutely key in making our ambitions and strategic goals real. We deemed cloud technology to be foundational towards a modernized and migrated BP.

We're dealing with systems and we can't disrupt operations. We have to operate in a timeframe that makes sense as far as how fast innovation and technology change, so things needed to move quite rapidly.”

So, which comes first? Modernization or migration?

So, which comes first? Modernization or migration?

For us, the answer was both. Modernization and migration were partners, but this sequence can vary depending on the landscape of your situation and the needs of your company. As we looked across our landscape, the applications we’re in, as well as our infrastructure we concluded that modernization and migrations needed to operate in parallel with one another. It just made sense to not just do a lift and shift or just straight migrations without considering the objective from a technology and business perspective.

Don’t suffer from analysis paralysis by sitting around planning out the perfect migration or modernization effort. Quite frankly, you need to just get in there, get your hands dirty doing assessments, understanding them, prioritizing them around maintaining operations. Consider the risk of into serviceable life, what those threats are, and how will you address those threats.

Start by cutting your teeth on the low-hanging fruit, the simpler things to build up your capabilities. Trial and error was par for the course when revamping our business model.

For us, taking a step back to understand our situation, where we were, where our business is trying to go, and what our overall objectives and goals gave us clarity. We're not a technology shop, we run and operate an energy business and we need to align our understanding, objectives, and overall end goals on what’s the best for us to deliver for the customers we serve.

How your company can ride the benefits of the cloud

How your company can ride the benefits of the cloud

We partnered with AWS to come in and build the platforms, but again, our capabilities, we needed to get those up to snuff and actually build the team's confidence around the technology and learn the product. Working and partnering with AWS, we utilized their training and everything else from a platform perspective. We Became Limitless. We were willing to go out on a limb, take risks, and move at the pace we could never have dreamed of. Breaking through this barrier has opened up our minds to limitless possibilities.

BP’s Benefits to Cloud Modernization and Mitigation

  1. Cost savings
  2. Agility
  3. Disaster recovery and business continuity
  4. Lowering carbon footprint by getting rid of mega data centers
  5. Eliminate the need to upgrade infrastructure
  6. Innovative working environment
  7. Cost savings are used to invest time, effort, and money into employee development
The bright future for BP

The bright future for BP

After getting thousands of cloud migrations underneath our belt we are getting bigger and better every day. We're starting to move into the exciting realm of expanding our regional data centers across the globe, as we restructure our business move away from being an oil and gas company to an energy company with renewable energy and the environment in mind. This is a new frontier for BP and undoubtedly introduces new complexities around how we leverage technology and how we make sure that we're connected across the space to integrate and work together as a business to provide solutions. AI technology is something we are extremely excited about as we automate a lot of things to drive efficiency using digital twin solutions, edge case technology, and the capability to mitigate a problem without physically having to be there.

At BP, we try and be the best-in-class at whatever it is that we're doing. After working so long in the trading arena you start to realize as quickly as things change with the market, with things being more margin-driven, the only way that you're going to be able to do that is to leverage digital technology, to automate, and to be as efficient, lean and effective as you can be.
