You pay by the hour for the software on an EC2 instance, with no upfront commitment. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. The hourly rate scales with the size and family of the instance you pick. Smaller sizes like micro, nano, and large cost less per hour, while larger sizes such as 24xlarge, 48xlarge, and metal cost more. Instance families cover general purpose, compute, memory, storage, GPU, and high-performance computing needs. You choose the instance type that fits your database workload, and billing follows the running hours of that instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What software do I get on each instance, and what does the hourly rate cover?
You get a hardened Amazon Linux 2023 image with MariaDB, a MySQL-compatible database, preinstalled. The image ships with current updates applied. The hourly rate covers the software licence on the running EC2 instance. Underlying AWS compute and storage are billed separately by AWS.
Am I charged the software fee when the instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters running instance-hours. When you stop an instance, it no longer accrues the hourly software charge. AWS may still bill underlying storage for the stopped instance's attached volumes. The software licence itself follows the running time of the instance you selected.
If I switch to a bigger instance type, does the whole bill change or only the new hours?
Each hour bills at the rate for whichever instance type is running during that hour. When you move to a different type, the new hourly rate applies only from that point forward. Past hours keep the rate of the type running at the time. Larger families and sizes carry higher hourly rates.
