Q: What does the Amazon S3 Glacier Re:Freezer solution do?

A: The Amazon S3 Glacier Re:Freezer is a serverless solution that automatically copies entire Amazon S3 Glacier vault archives to a defined destination Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3 bucket) and S3 storage class.

The solution automates the optimized restore, copy, and transfer process and provides a prebuilt Amazon CloudWatch dashboard to visualize the copy operation progress. Deploying this solution allows you to seamlessly copy your S3 Glacier vault archives to more cost effective storage locations such as the Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage class.

Copying your Amazon S3 Glacier vault contents to the S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage class combines the low cost and high durability benefits of S3 Glacier Deep Archive, with the familiar Amazon S3 user and application experience that offers simple visibility and access to data. Once your archives are stored as objects in your Amazon S3 bucket, you can add tags to your data to enable items such as attributing data costs on a granular level.

Note: The solution only copies archives from a source S3 Glacier vault to the destination S3 bucket, it does not delete archives in the source S3 Glacier vault. After the solution completes a successful archive copy to the destination S3 bucket, you must manually delete the archives from your S3 Glacier vault.

Q: Can the solution retrieve objects stored in an Amazon S3 bucket which have been either copied to, or lifecycle trasnitioned (using S3 Lifecyle Policies) to the S3 Glacier storage class?

A: No. The solution is designed to retrieve data that has been written DIRECTLY to a Glacier vault and not to a S3 storage class. It cannot be used to retrieve objects that are stored in an Amazon S3 bucket and S3 Glacier storage class.

Q: Can I deploy multiple stacks of this solution concurrently in the same account?

A: Multiple Amazon S3 Glacier Re:Freezer stacks are supported in the same account and the same Region if they are configured with different Amazon S3 Glacier vaults as sources or different Amazon S3 buckets as destinations. The account must have adequate concurrent Lambda capacity - each stack will reserve 81 concurrent Lambda instances and will require another 30 unreserved instances.

Q: Can I deploy this solution in any AWS Region?

A: The solution requires all solution components including the source Glacier vault, destination S3 bucket, and deployed CloudFormation stack to reside in the same account and same AWS Region. This solution uses AWS Services that are currently available in all available Regions. For more information, refer to the AWS Regional Services Table.

Q: How much does this solution cost?

A: You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this solution. Estimated costs vary based on the number of archives processed and total volume of data to copy from an Amazon S3 Glacier vault.

The table below details the estimated costs for two scenarios of running this solution using the default settings in the US East (N. Virginia) Region and Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive as the destination S3 storage class.

Scenario 1 is the estimated cost of running the solution to copy 100,000 Amazon S3 Glacier vault archives, totaling 100TB of data, from an Amazon S3 Glacier vault to the destination Amazon S3 bucket and S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage class.

Scenario 2 is the estimated cost of running this solution to copy 10,000,000 Glacier vault archives, totaling 100TB of data, from an Amazon S3 Glacier vault to the destination Amazon S3 bucket and S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage class.
