You pay by the hour for this pre-configured software image running on the EC2 instance you pick. The hourly software rate changes with the instance you select. Each row is a distinct EC2 instance type, not a feature tier. Options span general-purpose, compute, memory, storage, GPU, and high-memory families across many sizes. Smaller instances (fewer virtual CPUs and less memory) carry lower hourly rates. Larger instances and metal or high-memory types carry higher rates. Choose the instance that matches your workload size. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What exactly am I paying for in each hourly rate?
You pay for a pre-configured software image that bundles the database engine and the Windows Server operating system, running on the EC2 instance size you choose. The hourly software charge is separate from the underlying AWS compute and storage fees, which AWS bills you directly.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance is running. A stopped or paused instance stops accruing this software fee. You may still pay AWS for attached storage, such as disk volumes, while the instance is stopped, but that is separate from the software rate.
What happens to my cost if I switch to a larger instance type?
You pay the hourly rate tied to whichever instance type is running at that time. Moving to a larger size, such as a metal or high-memory type, raises the hourly software rate. Switching back to a smaller size lowers it. Billing follows the actual instance you run each hour.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Below is a step-by-step process on using SQL Server with Windows on AWS.
1. Getting Started with Windows on AWS
You can learn more about Windows usage on AWS through this AWS Windows page. This page contains resources on deploying Windows-based EC2 instances, licensing options, and using Microsoft services on AWS.
2. Logging in as Administrator
To log in to your AWS Windows instance as an Administrator, follow these steps:
Use the private key (.pem) file you generated when you created your EC2 instance to decrypt the Administrator password.
After obtaining the password, you can use it to log in to your Windows instance through Remote Desktop (RDP).
3. Launch SQL Server
To open SQL Server, go to the Start Menu and search for SQL Server, then select SQL Server 2017 Configuration Manager. SQL Server 2017 will be launched.
