You pay by the hour for the software running on a chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance size, so there are no tiers or feature levels to pick. Pricing scales with the compute, memory, and storage of the instance you select. Smaller shared-core types like the t and m families cost less per hour. Larger compute (c), memory (r, x, z, u), storage (d, i), and accelerated (g, p, inf, trn) families cost more. You run PostgreSQL on Ubuntu and are billed only for the hours your instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get for the hourly charge on a chosen instance type?
You get PostgreSQL preinstalled on Ubuntu, running as a ready-to-deploy image on the Amazon EC2 instance you select. The instance type sets the virtual CPUs, memory, and storage. The hourly rate covers the software running on that one instance size for each hour it runs.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
The software charge applies per hour while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS fees, such as storage for the stopped instance, may still apply separately. Billing resumes when you start the instance again.
If I move to a larger instance type, how does my hourly cost change?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, so switching sizes changes your rate to that type's hourly price. There are no partial upgrades. You stop the current instance and launch the new size. Larger compute, memory, or accelerated families carry higher hourly rates than smaller shared-core types.
