AWS for Industries
AWS for Telecom demos at AWS re:Invent 2023 Industry Pavilion
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, the intersection of cloud computing, generative artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and 5G technology provides communication service providers (CSPs) with fresh revenue streams and the opportunity to attract and retain new customers. Through a series of insightful re:Invent demos our Amazon Web Services (AWS) experts reveal how they are working with telcos to transform operations, digitize industries, and reimagine consumer experiences.
This year’s re:Invent demo sessions encompassed a wide range of topics, including the monetization of 5G networks, the creation of personalized customer journeys, and the transformation of content discovery powered by generative AI.

Transforming telcos
AWS solutions are built on a robust, sustainable, cost-effective, and resilient infrastructure, enabling you to harness tomorrow’s innovation with 5G connectivity and AI applications.
Powered by tools such as Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, and our AI/ML services, our demos delivered deep dives into the specific challenges that can be addressed with generative AI, such as personalizing the customer journey, improving performance and services, and monetizing your networks.
Hyper-personalized customer journeys powered by analytics and generative AI
With the increasing number of mobile operators, it’s easy for users to switch provider, so growing the lifetime value of your existing customers—whilst keeping costs low—is more important than ever. One way to achieve this is by identifying those users about to churn and retaining them with hyper-personalized offers.
This demo reveals how Globe Telecom (the largest operator in the Philippines) and Stellar Elements (an Amdocs Company) targeted three key personas—a marketing manager, end customer, and customer service agent— with the goal of providing hyper-personalized offers and enhanced customer experiences via generative AI.

Improving performance of network and services through advanced analytics and generative AI
For field service technicians (who spend their days maintaining and repairing critical network infrastructure) being able to swiftly obtain concise summaries of network-related tasks and issues is vital. To address this need Cox Communications has developed a Q&A chatbot, powered by a large language model (LLM).
This demonstration showcases how Cox Communications used generative AI to construct an interactive conversational system, which delivered quick overviews of new and resolved tickets and work orders, whilst significantly reducing the time spent on manual documentation searches.

Monetizing the network with 5G anywhere and generative AI
Mobile telecom pricing models have traditionally been based on payment plans that reflect data consumption, talk minutes, and SMS/MMS messaging. But 5G networks provide the opportunity to support more dynamic pricing models through access to standardized data analytics.
This demo shows how Mavenir and Spirent were able to rapidly develop new 5G use cases in collaboration with AWS. And you will discover how API access to Network Exposure Function (NEF) and Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) can deliver deeper insight into user behavior, user preferences, and network performance.

Digitize industries
This year’s re:Invent 2023 demos uncovered the potential of new B2C and B2B revenue streams (using the B2B2X business model for telcos), whilst also showcasing how Amdocs was able to implement robust mobile private networks to deliver immersive virtual experiences. Telcos revealed how they used AWS services such as AWS Data Exchange, AWS Marketplace, AWS Outposts, to reduce time-to-deployment, create better customer experiences, combine ML/ AI with 5G networks and edge computing, and open up new monetization opportunities.
Innovative B2B offerings through B2B2X marketplace
Building out a 5G network is a costly undertaking, but CSPs can enhance the value of their core network resources and add new revenue streams by reselling their network functions and partner services in a zero-touch fashion.
In this demo, CSPs enhance demand for their premium network services by following the B2B2X marketplace model, and by establishing partnerships with AWS and top-tier Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) such as Salesforce, Nokia, and Summit Tech. And you will discover how AWS assists partners in 5G monetization by curating products within a B2B2X marketplace.

Immersive tourism experience with VR and private network
Delivering 5G services in outdoor environments provides exciting opportunities for CSPs. Mobile private networks (MPNs) combine high data transfer rates and low latency, and they give CSPs the ability to realize innovative use cases, such as the deployment of augmented and virtual reality (VR) technologies in remote locations.
Powered by Smartlite, this demo focuses on a VR project that was created for tourists visiting Mexico’s Chichen Itza temple, which Amdocs deployed in the field via Integrated Private Wireless (IPW) on AWS. And it illustrates how images, videos and 3D models were interacted with using VR devices.

Reimagine consumer experiences
AWS is helping companies reimagine their consumer experience by harnessing digital innovation, exploring emerging 5G revenue streams, and building entertainment services that utilize low-latency audio and video.
At re:Invent 2023 attendees experienced two demos that illustrated how AWS solutions are creating new and immersive consumer experiences, whilst empowering telcos to drive customer retention and revenue. AWS experts revealed how solutions such as edge computing and AWS Wavelength Zones are enabling developers to build applications that deliver ultra-low latencies to mobile devices and consumers, opening new possibilities for media streaming and multimedia collaboration. Elsewhere, services such as AWS AppSync, Amazon CloudFront, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Cognito are driving business agility and helping partners create next-generation customer experiences.
Pay TV re-imagined: Unified Discovery and Control with generative AI
Providing customers with the best access to an ever-increasing mix of content will be a key part of driving revenue growth and customer retention for CSPs.
This demo explores solutions to two key challenges that telco TV customers are facing as PayTV evolves from traditional channel bundles to app subscriptions. Specifically, the demo focuses on new ways to promote and discover content across apps, and to make it easier for consumers to manage their subscriptions. Using AWS Bedrock, it enables customers to engage with the platform to find items of interest in a more natural, conversational fashion. It also enables personalised automation of the editorial function, including video summarization. And using a subscription hub, such as the one that Optus built on AWS, it is possible to manage all subscriptions centrally.

AWS unplugged: A real time remote music collaboration session using 5G and MEC
Improved access to 5G network analytics means that CSPs can deliver new services and subscription models that require consistent low-latency network performance, ensuring that benchmarks for areas such as latency, jitter, and packet loss can be maintained and monitored.
This demo features Open Sesame, a B2B platform as a service company that uses 5G ultra-low latency audio to enable collaboration between music creators, via its patent-pending SyncStage platform, which requires network performance with less than 10ms latency. And it highlights how Open Sesame, Verizon and AWS achieved the performance consistency required for real-time audio collaboration.
