15 billion litres restored: How Amazon Web Services is helping secure Cape Town’s water future

Cape Town, South Africa faces a complex water crisis. With its population rapidly growing in the face of climate change-induced droughts, the city has had to get creative about ensuring continued access to clean water for its residents. In 2018, Cape Town narrowly avoided “Day Zero” – the day the taps would run completely dry. Now, thanks to an innovative partnership between Amazon Web Services (AWS), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the City of Cape Town, billions of litres of water are being returned annually to the region through nature-based solutions.

As part of its pledge to be water positive by 2030, AWS recently announced the renewal of its strategic investment in TNC’s Greater Cape Town Water Fund. The fund implements watershed restoration activities like removing invasive, thirsty plants from catchment areas that supply Cape Town’s reservoirs. This work helps conserve native vegetation, reduces wildfire severity, and allows more water to flow to the city.

Louise Stafford, TNC’s South Africa Country Director, highlighted the significance of AWS’ support and partnership. “The generous investments of Amazon Web Services have already had a significant impact in putting this science into action, and we are deeply grateful that they have chosen to continue this historic journey with us.”

The need for nature-based solutions

Cape Town has grappled with severe droughts over the past decade, bringing the city distressingly close to running out of water in 2018. Experts recognized the need for quick, meaningful interventions to boost water security.

Research indicated that thirsty non-native pine trees were soaking up huge volumes of water – 55 billion litres per year – in critical catchment areas outside the city. By removing these invasive pines and restoring native vegetation, more water could flow downstream to Cape Town’s reservoirs.

The Greater Cape Town Water Fund, launched in 2018, operationalizes this nature-based solution. Specialist teams ventured into remote, mountainous areas to uproot invasive pines across 130,000 acres of critical watersheds. It was clear that longer-term investments in ecosystem restoration would be required to provide lasting water security improvements.

The impact so far

The restoration efforts enabled by AWS, TNC, and other partners are already paying dividends. Approximately 15.2 billion litres of water are now flowing back into the Greater Cape Town region every year due to fewer invasive plants extracting water upstream. This figure is expected to grow as restoration activities continue through 2030.

Cape Town has enshrined natural infrastructure-based solutions like watershed restoration into its municipal water strategy. The city government also contributed $9 million towards efforts to revitalize its water-providing ecosystems. As Stafford stated, “The City of Cape Town has now integrated nature-based solutions into its municipal water strategy as a result of the success of the GCTWF project.”

AWS’ water positive pledge

AWS’s involvement in Cape Town represents just one component of its ambitious commitment to become “water positive” by 2030. This means AWS aims to replenish more water than it consumes through four key strategies: efficiency, sustainable water sources, community reuse, and replenishment projects.

The company minimizes water usage across its data centers and cloud operations. It funds replenishment initiatives globally, including in Brazil, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Will Hewes, AWS’s Global Lead for Water Sustainability, highlighted the broader significance of the Cape Town partnership.

“The partnership between AWS and The GCTWF marks another significant step in AWS’ ongoing commitment to achieving our water-positive objectives, and our first contribution to improve water security for the City of Cape Town.”

When complete, the replenishment projects AWS has supported to date are projected to return 2.4 billion litres annually to communities worldwide. For Cape Town, AWS’s involvement has been invaluable in enacting data-driven watershed restoration programs and pioneering the adoption of nature-based solutions locally.

The path ahead

The Greater Cape Town Water Fund provides a blueprint for how municipalities can utilize ecosystem restoration to boost urban water security amidst climate change. The successes in Cape Town are now being replicated in cities around the world.

Meanwhile, the GCTWF itself continues to scale its ambitions. Stafford shared that “Over the next two years, the Greater Cape Town Water Fund will transition towards its ultimate goal of becoming an independent, locally-led entity.”

Through renewed investment from AWS and growing municipal buy-in, the initiative aims to have an even greater impact this decade. Already, the tangible results – 15 billion litres and counting – signal how strategic collaborations between corporations, non-profits, and city governments can deploy nature to help secure our water future.

For Cape Town, AWS, The Nature Conservancy, and partners like the city government, the work has only just begun.
