AWS for Industries
Unlocking Data Operations at Scale with AWS IoT SiteWise Edge and Litmus
Per a recent study from IoT World Analytics, more than 70% of respondents listed managing different data formats and industrial protocols as inhibiting them from scaling their smart factory initiatives. The data pipeline between industrial (OT) , IT, and the cloud requires many integrated systems to create a unified data foundation, often leading to longer lead times to scale digital transformation projects, as well as increased infrastructure and management costs. In the rapidly evolving world of industrial automation and IoT, the need for seamless integration between edge computing platforms and cloud-based services has become increasingly critical. The collaboration between AWS IoT SiteWise Edge and Litmus Edge represents a significant step forward in unlocking the full potential of industrial IoT.
AWS IoT SiteWise and AWS IoT SiteWise Edge provide a simplified path for customers to collect, process, and send industrial data from the edge to the cloud. With IoT SiteWise, customers can use an edge gateway to collect data from OPC-UA sources, ingest and organize the data, and publish it to IoT SiteWise in the AWS cloud. IoT SiteWise Edge acts as an intermediary, offering expanded edge processing capabilities. Customers can filter data, compute metrics, and store the results locally or forward to the cloud. This helps maintain data availability even if the edge node loses network connectivity, as data can be stored locally for up to 30 days.
AWS IoT SiteWise Edge is now directly integrated with Litmus Edge. With this integration customers now have the option to quickly connect to over 250+ industry protocols to build a robust data pipeline with rich contextualized data for meaningful analysis, before securely sending it to the cloud.
Litmus is an Edge native platform with Edge Management built in. Litmus offers Litmus Edge and Edge Manager, an integrated edge-to-cloud Industrial IoT platform. The platform is purpose-built to collect, process and analyze data at the edge, then rapidly integrate the data with an AWS cloud database, or message broker for data storage, analytics, and AI/ML application. Figure 1 shows the Litmus edge management software console, where users can add Litmus software as a data source on their AWS IoT SiteWise gateway, via the Litmus container. This allows users to configure desired data flows and develop their data pipeline.
After the configurations are deployed, the sensor data flows seamlessly to AWS IoT SiteWise Edge for local monitoring, storage, and access at the edge. As shown in the image above, data from PLCs, SCADA, and historians will publish the MQTT messages to the MQTT broker running on IoT SiteWise Edge. From here, data is published from the edge to the AWS cloud where users can create equipment monitoring dashboards, build AI/ML models in the cloud, monitor KPIs with applications such as AWS IoT SiteWise monitor, AWS IoT TwinMaker, Amazon Athena, Amazon SageMaker and many more services available in the AWS cloud.
Together with Litmus Edge and AWS IoT SiteWise, customers can connect and scale edge deployments across multiple sites. One such customer is EID Parry. As a 200+ year agribusiness conglomerate in India, EID Parry wanted to address maintenance and supply chain disruptions by improving visibility and connectivity across their manufacturing assets. Working with partners, Litmus and Tridiagonal (a systems integrator), EID Parry connected over 250 critical parameters from their PLCs bringing this data into AWS IoT SiteWise and AWS IoT Core, developing the necessary KPIs to monitor and troubleshoot processes. Rapidly accelerating time to value, EID Parry scaled from the initial POC to full deployment in just 6 months with a plan to scale across 7 additional manufacturing sites in the next year.
By harnessing the power of AWS IoT SiteWise Edge and Litmus Edge, industrial organizations can unlock the true potential of industrial IoT, driving greater operational efficiency, improved decision-making, and enhanced competitiveness in their respective markets. As the demand for real-time, data-driven decision-making continues to grow, this powerful collaboration will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of computing and the way we interact with the world around us.
