AWS for Industries

Until Next Time, Cable-Tec Expo

The AWS for Telecom team said goodbye (until 2024) to Lawrence Argent’s giant blue bear that peeks into the Colorado Convention Center, and wrapped up a week of fun and memories from the SCTE Expo.

To recap: an industry first – AWS for Telecom was at SCTE Expo 23, the annual cable industry technology conference, from Oct. 16-19, in Denver, Colorado, United States. Wireline broadband cloudification is a 2023 AWS telecom industry business unit initiative and in the last 6 months, AWS has been working with ISVs to transform their wireline broadband technologies with the AWS Cloud. The Expo was a great opportunity for us to showcase our capabilities and continue to grow this footprint. As I detailed in my pre-event blog post, we hosted three joint demos/presentations with major wireline ISVs in their booths:

  • With Harmonic on disaster recovery use case for Harmonic’s CableOS (vCMTS, vBNG)
  • Demonstrated with Casa Systems on running their vBNG Control Plane on AWS
  • With Ciena running their vBNG Control Plane on AWS for flexible workload placement and disaster recovery use cases

The AWS team showcased our thought leadership in three technical sessions. Convergence is a hot topic in the cable industry and I had the pleasure of (and lots of fun) introducing converged user planes (also known as GUPpies) as part of the cloud workshop. Experts from Charter Communications and Rogers discussed public and private wireless use cases in the private 5G workshop that I moderated. In the early hours of the event’s last day, our customers and partners heard from Jim Huang first-hand on the details of fiber network resiliency when leveraging the AWS Cloud.

Senior consultants from Altman Solon and our very own AI specialist Nameet Dutia and Ross McWalter took attendees on a 45-min whistle-stop tour of generative AI, where we shared insights about applications in the telecom space and a live demo in querying SCTE Standards documents.

If you missed our events this year or want to know more, drop me a line and book a meeting.

Here’s to keeping that incredible recent Expo experience fresh as we continue our journey in the wireline networks into 2024. We look forward to seeing you all next year in Atlanta!
