AWS Marketplace launches Geo-Fencing to enable sellers to control availability by country

AWS Marketplace enables more than 1,600 sellers to sell their software and data products to over 290,000 customers worldwide. As a global seller growing your business through AWS Marketplace, you require the ability to identify which countries you sell into for tax, compliance, or go-to-market purposes. To address this need, AWS Marketplace launched Geo-Fencing to allow you to control product availability by country in new or existing products.

AWS Marketplace products are available for AWS customers in all locations by default. In this blog post, I show you how to add Geo-Fencing preferences to new and existing software products you list in AWS Marketplace.

Note that the eligibility of the AWS Marketplace buyer is determined by your account location. Any changes you make will not impact existing subscriptions purchased prior to Geo-Fencing settings being implemented. AMI, container, and SaaS products support Geo-Fencing. In many cases, customers unable to purchase a Geo-Fenced product can purchase through an AWS Consulting Partner using Consulting Partner Private Offers (CPPO).

Adding Geo-Fencing to a new hourly or annual AMI product

To add Geo-Fencing to a new AMI product, go to the AWS Marketplace Management Portal.

  • In Products, choose Create New Server product and select Paid hourly or hourly-annual.
  • On the product listing page, select the Pricing and Instance Types tab. You have three options: Worldwide, Worldwide with some countries excluded, and Only some countries. The Worldwide selection enables all AWS customers to purchase your product. Worldwide with some countries excluded enables all AWS customers except for the selected countries to purchase your product. Only some countries enables only AWS customers from the selected countries to purchase your product. All products have Worldwide selected by default.

Excluding certain countries or regions

To make your product available in all countries except for a selected few, follow these steps.

I want to make my product available everywhere except Spain, for example. I select the Worldwide with some countries excluded option. In the Select Countries to Exclude search box, I enter Spain and select Spain in the drop down. Then I choose Save.

Selecting only certain countries or regions

To make your products available only in an approved list of countries, follow these steps.

For example, I want to make my product available only in the U.S. I select the Only Some Countries option. In the Select Countries to Include search box, I enter United States and select United States in the drop down. Then I choose Save.

Adding Geo-Fencing to a new SaaS product

To add Geo-Fencing to a new SaaS product, go to the AWS Marketplace Management Portal Products page. Choose Create New SaaS product and then New SaaS Contract or New SaaS Subscription. On the product listing page, select the Pricing tab and apply the Geo-Fencing preferences as described earlier.

Adding Geo-Fencing to an existing product

To update Geo-Fencing settings on existing products, first navigate to the product in the AWS Marketplace Management Portal. In the upper right part of the screen, choose Request changes and select Update descriptions, latest version, regions, pricing. Choose Edit Pricing & Instance Types and apply the Geo-Fencing preferences as described earlier.

Adding Geo-Fencing to product load form
