The municipality of Recife, with an estimated population of 1.62 million, is at the center of a metropolitan region formed by 13 municipalities and around 94 neighborhoods. The cost to maintain such a large metropolis is great, requiring a complex public-cleaning operation with thousands of vehicles and employees, which was consuming nearly 10% of the city’s budget. Before implementing a new technology solution, supervising contractors and controlling the quality of street-cleaning services throughout the city was challenging.

No matter where you work, accounting for your costs can be complex. This is especially true in the public sector, where organizations, universities, and other entities are required to adhere to strict accounting constraints – particularly when accounting for grants and other forms of external funding. Oftentimes, customers use external funding to purchase cloud resources, so it is important that these funds are only allocated towards costs associated with the specific researcher or project for which the external funding was obtained.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has multiple Identity partitions: AWS, AWS GovCloud (US), and AWS China. You can see these represented in their ARNs (arn:aws, arn:aws-us-gov, arn:aws-cn). For security, services like Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) do not have access to credentials beyond their boundaries, which can make it difficult to transfer information from inside one Identity boundary to another. There is a new tool though, that reduces time and complexity for customers migrating their workloads into AWS GovCloud (US) – gov-cloud-import.
