AWS Marketplace

Checklist to successfully registering as a seller in AWS Marketplace

AWS Marketplace is a curated digital catalog that makes it easy for customers to find, test, buy, and deploy third-party software, data products, and services that customers need to build solutions and run their businesses.

In this post, I aim to provide you with some best practices to consider as you approach registering as a seller and listing paid products in AWS Marketplace.

Checklist to successfully registering as a seller in AWS Marketplace

1. Review the seller requirements for listing paid products in AWS Marketplace

To start with, you are required to meet the following:

  • Sell publicly available, full-featured, production-ready software.
  • Have a defined customer support process and support organization.
  • Provide a means to keep software regularly updated and free of vulnerabilities.
  • Follow best practices and guidelines when marketing your product in AWS Marketplace.
  • Be an AWS customer in good standing and meet the requirements in the terms and conditions for AWS Marketplace sellers.

2. Review the eligible jurisdiction for listing paid software in AWS Marketplace

It is best to review the Eligible jurisdictions for paid products of the AWS Marketplace seller guide. This is a live document and the main source of truth for eligible jurisdictions that can list paid software in AWS Marketplace. If you are not in an eligible jurisdiction, you cannot sell in AWS Marketplace.

3. Identify an AWS account to use as your seller of record account

Registering as a seller in AWS Marketplace requires you to use an AWS account. To register as a seller, it is a best practice to create a new AWS account. This AWS account is referred to as the seller of record account. Once you use an AWS account to list a product in AWS Marketplace, you can’t change the account associated with the product. A key item to keep in mind is that the tax settings in the AWS billing console for the AWS account you use to register must be from an eligible jurisdiction, as mentioned in step 2.

One thing to keep in mind regarding your seller of record account is that the teams in charge of creating and managing AWS Marketplace products should not have access to production workload or AWS accounts that run production workloads. This provides a separation of duties between the teams in charge of creating and managing your AWS Marketplace products and your IT teams. If you do not choose to create a new AWS account but instead want to use your current AWS account for seller registration, you should use the managed policies for AWS Marketplace sellers. You can assign these AWS Marketplace seller policies to the team members responsible for managing AWS Marketplace products.

If you decide to create a new AWS account to be the seller of record AWS account for AWS Marketplace, there are a few items to keep in mind:

4. Gather the required information to start the seller registration process

There are a number of assets that you should gather prior to starting the seller registration process in AWS Marketplace. Review the seller registration process in our seller guide for the full process.

      • For US-based entities, a W-9 is required.
      • Non-US sellers require a:
        • W-8 form.
        • Value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) registration number.
  • Bank Account
    • A US bank account is required for all sellers who want to sell paid products in AWS Marketplace. AWS Marketplace only disburses to US bank accounts.
    • If you do not already have a US bank account, you may be able to obtain a virtual one through Hyperwallet.
